Electrostatic Discharge Issues

LazerMaster5

Question

I'm sure you guys are familiar with electrostatic Discharge. It manages to build up in my headphone cord. When I plug it in to my iPod or tablet, everything is fine, but my PC is ultrasensitive to static. I have tried tapping the end of the cord onto something metal to discharge it before I plug it in, but it still gives a little shock to my PC half the time. For a while, the shock would just knock my mouse offline for 5 seconds. It actually burned out the USB port the mouse was plugged into, and the mouse is in a new Port. For the longest time, this was the only noticeable effect of static. However, today it knocked my graphics card offline for a few seconds. This concerns me. Does anyone know a good way to solve this static issue? I don't want to burn out my GPU whenever I plug in my headphones.

This is not normal. How are you storing the headphones? What kind are they?

BTW, the reason your iPod isn't affected is that the ipod isn't grounded. Your PC is.

Could it also be maybe an issue in the headphone jack rather than the headphones themselves? I'd google the problem + your PC model to see if it's a known issue. In the mean time stop using those headphones on your PC oh my goodness D:

Try using the back port of your PC(Unless you're on a laptop), it could be the front port is having some sort of issue.  If you still yield the same results for the love of god stop using those headphones, you could seriously damage something.  Try a pair of earbuds you have lying around, or something like that.  It's unlikely your headphones are the issue, but try not to rule them out just yet.

There's a headphone jack on my speaker set, I may use that. Hopefully that should preserve my PC parts.

Okay this may sound weird but I had a really similar issue with some old, cheap headphones back in like 2010.

Are the headset lined with like fabric or synthetic fiber material? And do you wear a lot of heavy cotton/gear like Reebok or Underarmor?

The headphones are manufactured by Monster, part of the N-credible line. They are the N-pulse model, a $200 pair with awesome sound quality and a durable cord. The cord is rubberized like a firehose, with gold wiring. I always remove the cord when I am not using it so my cat Mimi doesn't try to eat it. It's winter, so I wear a hoodie and slippers around the house to keep warm. Sometimes I also wear my robe, which is pretty much a static machine.
