So There's Going To Be Entirely Free Unreal Engine 4 Distribution

Unreal Engine 4 is now available to everyone for free, and all future updates will be free!

You can download the engine and use it for everything from game development, education, architecture, and visualization to VR, film and animation. When you ship a game or application, you pay a 5% royalty on gross revenue after the first $3,000 per product, per quarter. It’s a simple arrangement in which we succeed only when you succeed.

This is the complete technology we use at Epic when building our own games. It scales from indie projects to high-end blockbusters; it supports all the major platforms; and it includes 100% of the C++ source code. Our goal is to give you absolutely everything, so that you can do anything and be in control of your schedule and your destiny. Whatever you require to build and ship your game, you can find it in UE4, source it in the Marketplace, or build it yourself – and then share it with others.

Now this is awesome news. While I'm by no means qualified to work with coding or game dev, this might be a chance for more capacitated indie devs take a crack with quality tools.

Inb4 StarFox MMO confirmed.

What do y'all here on SFO think?

I'm going to be the first when I say, that's really really cool. Give the people a chance to try it out. Then they let you keep the first 3,000 as a handicap and let you do it again. I think it looks like they're thinking of the indie and underdog developers first to promote new and creative games and not completely hinder them with somewhat pricey purchase costs.

They're taking your hand and showing you that door to Vidyagame success. Whispering in your ear ... "if you are going to do it, do it like a fuckin' pro m8."

I also see what you did in the title there Orbi and I am a proud.

Sounds like a pretty sweet deal, especially for the consumers of media that will take advantage of UE4's widespread availability now.

Glad games will be off Unreal 3, that engine had issues, especially that something about it caused netcoding issues.

Note to self: Pester Square Enix and Disney to port Kingdom Hearts 3 to PC.
