Your fave 2D Sonic titles

While Sonic has been having a fairly good run of form in his recent 3D games (Sonic Lost World, the Wii version of Sonic Colors, etc.),
I think we're all in agreement that the 2D ones are the best. So, in light of this fact, what are your favorite 2D sonic titles?

I'm a big fan of the Sonic Rush series on Nintendo DS, mainly because Blaze the Cat, in my opinion, is the best character to get
introduced into the series since E-102 Gamma debuted in Sonic Adventure.

Sonic 3 and Knuckles, easily. (Particularly the Sonic 3 Complete hack by Tiddles)

Other than that top best were the original three. StH 1, StH 2 and StH 3 & Knuckles. CD was a cool concept was was just bad. The simplicity of the game along with the clever story and creative design all added to why Sonic was a household name back in the day. I feel a lot of these great qualities were lost the more Sonic went on. SBA2 was amazing tho'.

Sonic CD would've been great if it weren't for the level design.

Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 have not aged well.

I vote Sonic The Hedgehog 2 simply because of Tails and the music. Who could forget the Chemical Plant Zone Theme? Certainly not me!  

As a matter of fact, I wish that it too was added to Smash Wii U.

Sonic 3 was the very first game I ever saw/played, and Sonic CD is also very near and dear to me. 

On the topic of 3D Sonic games, I honestly haven't played any of the ones past Heroes. I mean, yeah I played Generations but that's like saying "I haven't listened to any of (so and so)'s albums past (insert last album by major older band) but I did listen to his "Greatest Hits" album". And a little bit of Sonic 06 when it was new, but Heroes is about where I stopped caring about Sonic games. Clunky controls, bad writing, lame characters, etc. Just not my speed

​More like who could forget the drowning music when you inevitably fell off of the track in Chemical Plant Zone and frantically attempted to get back on it in vain. 

Sonic 2 was my favorite though; it was one of the first games that I had for my Genesis, along with Streets of Rage.  Many hours were sunk into each.

When I was 4 or 5, me and my older brother used to nothing but play the multiplayer mode of Sonic 2 every weekday for an hour or so after school. He'd be Sonic, I'd be Tails, he beats my ass up and we laugh. Ah, those good days... I miss 'em.

Sonic & Knuckles for me, almost purely for Knuckles' playstyle. I just love the way he crawls up walls, like some kind of proto-Gex.

I can never decide between Sonic 3&K, and Sonic CD (Taxman remake, I don't like the original CD, the taxman version fixed ALL of those problems)

 

What I wanna know is, why do people like Sonic 2 so much? To me, its BORING!!!!!! I have had to redo those STUPID special stages so much that I have become a pro at it DX (You would think that's a good thing... But no, its not XD, not to me anyway)

Sonic CD is my favourite, love the story, the music and the levels. It's closely followed by Sonic 3 & Knuckles.

I think Sonic CD is the best, I love the more cryptic level design.  It feels difficult to see all the game has to offer, and I like that.

 

EDIT: Closely following that, I like the Sonic Advanced series a lot, although I haven't played it since I was a kid.
