Denslar's Species?

Okay, one thing I was wondering lately: what exacly is Denslar Koba's species? He look a lot like an oppossum, but he also looks a lot like a sugar gider. Or maybe even a lemur, perhaps (if we could see a tail, it would help a lot)?

Although many years have passed of the launch of the original Starfox, could there actually be a chance for us to discover about Denslar's and Bear's mysterious dissapearence, and if there is a connection between it and James' accident? However, there are MANY characters that we can consider "occult" in the series, and nothing about their fate are told in later games/comics/mangas.

He looks like a lemur or a sleep-depraved fox.

Since the snes continuity got pruned, I wouldn't expect to see them again

Pretty sure his name is Tesla (where did "Denslar" come from?) and that he's a lemur. Nothing noteworthy happened to them, I'm sure, since they didn't do anything noteworthy.

e: you're also still using "occult" wrong. The term you're looking for is "cult", unless you're implying that these guys are all necromancers or something. I know there's some definition of occult that just means "mysterious" or "obscured" or whatever but it's like, never used in this context.

This says his name is

デスラ コバー 軍曹
DE SU RA KO BAA GUN SOO

Desura Koba Gunso

Sgt. Desslar** Koba

**I don't really know how to translate "Desura," though. It's really close to Tesla, but Tesla is テスラ (TE SU RA), but a person who actually speaks Japanese translated another page and translated it as Desslar: http://www.glitterberri.com/star-fox/guidebook-intro/ and commented that a character in the anime "Space Battleship Yamato" had the same name.

Google Translate on my phone says he's with "Corneria Intelligence 2nd Special Platoon." and he flew an "M Scouter," which is said is an "Arwing-type command reconnaissance aircraft."

The other information about him isn't useful. Just his ID numbers and where he was going.

I'm not even going to try to translate the longer text. It would be an all-your-base google phone translation.

EDIT: Bear was the same rank, same unit, and flew the same ship.

For shits and giggles, here's Fox Sr's page:

MFP_029.jpg

Interestingly, he also has the rank of "軍曹  (Gunso)" or Sgt.

His listed affiliation shows that whoever wrote this knows nothing about military organization: "Corneria Defense Force 7th Company."

His ship was an "X Fighter" lol Star Wars reference. The rest of the translation is all-your-base-a-rific, but the best I can guess is "Cornerian Mk. IV Air Superiority Fighter" (Google says "Chapter IV period mainstay fighter")

Desslar is an actual name iirc, so that makes a bit more sense. I'd always seen it translated as Tesla somehow, huh. Guess it rolled off the tongue easier :P

Ermm...? So he's a ringtail?

Probably, the facial markings aren't quite right but his ears and muzzle seem to be pretty ringtaily. He could also be an Aye-Aye:

Makes more sense now, Drasi.

There is some kind of connection more or less. Mainly about the whole inter-dimensional aspect that the SNES game's plot dealt with. Fox's dad got sent to another dimension thanks to Andross's experimental bomb which was apparently sabotaged, and both Bear and Desura got sent to another dimension, possibly the one "James" is in. The text DZ didn't attempt translating in the MFP scans below mention the circumstances of all their disapearences. I think someone actually got those translated earlier and posted that in one of the threads here.

Desura encountered the weird bird that teleports you to the "origami dimension" with the slot machine at the end..

Bear encountered the Space Whale in Sector Y, aka "James"'s spaceship. (The whale is how the space ship appears to the people in Lylat apparently) (See MFP_045)

And Fox Senior "James" is basically explaining that there is a way to access the black hole in the asteroid belt, that one had been created by Dr Andross's anti-proton bomb experiments, and that the last encounter with a black hole was 6 years ago by a sergent("James").

Apparently that he was mentioned in a SF64 strategy guide apparently having crashed on Titania and never have been heard of again. Though I've been trying to track down in what guide exactly..

Depends on what you'd call noteworthy :/ I mean, depending on why you're looking for info on them, they might be..

In the guide, they're only there to introduce the "secrets" of the game, with a little plot about how each disapeared. But, they're the only other cornerians to have ever flown a Arwing besides Fara and the Starfox team. Even Fox Sr was still flying the X-fighter aka the old cornerian fighter. And they were apparently both spying on what Andross was doing when they disapeared. Its a bunch of fun little insights.

Well, honestly, anything written in Starfox about anything military is plain wrong. :/

Starfox shouldn't even talk with the general directly. Especially in Post-SF64 canon, considering in the SNES canon they apparently knew eachothers, which they don't in SF64..(besides Fox's dad being contracted by the cornerian military)

The fun thing about katakana is that, its all meant to sound like an approximated version of a foreign word.. But since syllables don't sound the same when said by a Japanese person and by anyone else, and some syllables are substituted by others based on sound, well, its hard to know unless you saw the same name used elsewhere before, or just asked the person that used the word XD

I saw a couple people translating it to tesla in the past too. But, looking at his signature, that's probably not it. And I'm not even sure its desslar either :

If you can decrypt that, then you've got some good eyes XD

  • 2 months later...

I know this is an almost a year old thread but it interests me so I'm gonna revive it!

Also, this is Desslar from Space Battleship Yamato. He's the main antagonist of the first series, a secondary antagonist of the second series, and a supporting protagonist of the third series.
