Cornerian Mercenaries

They weren't the first pick, they weren't the second pick either, in fact as Jasper Hiiahishi, leader of the mercenary group known as The Rejects sat looking out of the window of the drop craft carrying them, he wondered how many other bounty hunter teams the Cornerian Secret Service contacted before them. In the end, his team were the only people brave enough or stupid enough to undergo the assignment they were on their way to.

Recently, there had been a resurgence in support for the now deceased (or at least that's what the file said) Andross. A political party that wanted an absolute dictatorship had come into being, led by a man named Troy Nichols, a general under Andross from the second Lylat War. Noticing they had made a huge mistake in letting the party exist, the Cornerian government needed to get their hands dirty and eliminate Nichols, but they couldn't use the military, bad image, you see, so they needed mercs, and ended up with Jasper and his band of rag-tag guns for hire. Getting to Nichols would be no cake walk, Nichols had a lot of power and had set up a puppet government, complete with a functioning military. This would be a dangerous job, but he was determined to finish it. He pats the patch on the arm of his jacket, an image of a wolf grim reaper. A memento from his time in the Fortunan Resistance. He felt it was lucky.

He turns to his team and pulls a photo of Nichols, a gruff Rhino, out of his pocket . "This is our man." He says, "Don't bother trying to incapacitate him, they want him dead."

"We are over the drop zone. Get ready." The pilot says, "Get yourselves ready.

Jasper pulls his rifle off of the wall behind him, an old Fortunan battle rifle and puts his automag laser in the holster on his hip. He throws an oxygen mask on and grabs a parachute and moves over to the opening door of the craft.

"See you on the ground." He says, then jumps.

Elizabeth, Sandor, and Korben stood and slowly rocked as the craft encountered the occasional bout of turbulence. Elizabeth, with her rifle slung over her shoulder, stared coldly at the craft doors, patiently waiting for them to open. Sandor, his blood pumping and adrenaline running, breathed shallow breaths as he anticipated the signal to go. He was jittery, and his hands were balled up into fists. He ground his teeth in his mouth, hungering for combat. Korben examined his automatic blaster rifle, making sure that all of the nuts and bolts were in their rightful places and that the weapon would not jam. He also checked the ammunition count on both his primary weapon and his sidearm. Satisfied, he put down his blaster rifle. Slightly bored, he also examined his tail, a habit of his. After this, he looked to his right and found Sandor itching for the coming fight. He then looked to Elizabeth on Sandor's right. Elizabeth, sensing Korben's stare, looked back. Korben would almost never initiate a conversation, so Elizabeth took the initiative. "Ready, Korby?" she asked. Korben nodded 'yes'. Elizabeth looked down to Sandor. "Looks like our little man is ready, too," she announced, rubbing the top of Sandor's head. Sandor groaned in annoyance, and slapped away Elizabeth's arm. She chuckled. "Alright, Alex, calm down."

"20 seconds," Korben said.

"Got it," replied Elizabeth.

"Mm-hmm," Sandor uttered. Then, Jasper Hiiahishi, their boss for this job, who was standing in front of them, pulled out a picture of their target: Troy Nichols, a rhinoceros.

"This is our man," Jasper said. "Don't bother trying to incapacitate him, they want him dead." Elizabeth and Korben nodded in agreement. Sandor grinned.

"I want his horn," he said.

"10 seconds," Korben said. Then the pilot announced that the craft was nearing the drop zone. Jasper, in preparation for the jump, grabbed his rifle from the wall, as well as a parachute and oxygen mask. The craft's door opened, revealing the ground far below and a dark blue sky above. Jasper approached the doors, and looked back.

"See you on the ground," he yelled, for the wind was almost deafening. Jasper then leapt from the craft and rocketed down to the planet's surface. Sandor then suddenly bolted to the open doors, perfectly executed a somersault, and left the craft. Elizabeth and Korben looked at each other, then nodded. They ran to the doors, matching each other step for step, and jumped.

Jasper fell, a phenomenon he wasn't keen of. So, needless to say, he deployed his parachute the second he needed to and not a second late. He slowly approached the ground below him. He could see the target location coming into view. It was a large facility with a thick wall around it. Inside there were three official looking buildings and five barracks. He chambers a round in his rifle and, when he was close to the ground, clips off his parachute and falls the remaining distance.

Discarding his oxygen mask, he takes cover behind one of the buildings and waits for the remainder of his team to hit the ground.

"Hiiahishi has landed." He says, pressing the communicator that curved over his ear.

Elizabeth, Sandor, and Korben fell from the heavens and proceeded to Corneria below them. The twinkling lights of the military base were beginning to ebb away in the face of the morning sun. The trio, keeping as straight as possible, shot down towards the ground. The noise was deafening, and it was impossible for any of them to verbally communicate with each other in any way. Sandor pulled out a device that vaguely looked like a pistol from his pack. He aimed it at a lonely alley behind a building, where Jasper was waiting. He fired the device, which rocketed a small generator that created a rather miniscule zone of negative energy: about the size of a kiddie pool. Sandor had to land just right for him to hit the zone, and thankfully, he did. His body went from over 120 miles an hour to zero in an instant. He, however, was perfectly safe. Looking to Jasper as he floated in midair, he smiled. Suddenly, the generator turned off, and Sandor fell face-first onto the cold, hard, concrete pavement. Sandor got up, straightened his clothing, and dusted himself off. "That worked well," he commented. Elizabeth and Korben, however, took their time. The duo, after reaching a certain altitude, deployed their parachutes. They both felt the jerk of the canopy slowing their fall exponentially, and peacefully glided to the surface. The two of them landed in the same alley way where Jasper and Sandor were hiding. They discarded their chutes, and threw them into a nearby dumpster.

"Had a nice fall, Sandor?" Elizabeth asked, approaching him and Jasper.

"Sure did, Erzsebet," Sandor replied. Korben took out a scanner to check on Sandor's and Jasper's well-being. After they were cleared, he put it away. Sandor grasped an Ogniemite religious pendant that he wore around his neck at all times, and prayed momentarily, giving thanks to his God for keeping him alive so far, and then prayed for the protection of the rest of his teammates.

"So," said Elizabeth, unslinging her rifle and cocking it. "What now, Jas?"

"Nichols is in the center building." Jasper said. "Or at least I hope so. Cornerian military intelligence is sometimes lacking." He says, chuckling. "Anyway, we aren't going to rush the building, too many potential hostiles."

"You." He said, pointing to Elizabeth are going with Korben around the back of the building. Sandor and I will go in through the side entrance. Any hostiles you encounter are to be dealt with at your discression, but stay quiet. We can't afford to blow this."

He gets up and starts to walk quietly around the building, his rifle raised, Sandor following behind him. Once around to the edge of the building, Jasper sees a soldier on guard. He waits until he comes around to them, then puts him in a chokehold, covering his mouth as well.

"Right, Boss-man," Elizabeth said as she and Korben dashed in the other direction. Sandor, meanwhile, followed Jasper. When Elizabeth and Korben turned the corner of the building they were sneaking along, they found two dog guards: one male, one female. The male had a blaster rifle, the female was equipped with a sniper rifle. They were both conversing casually with one another. Elizabeth looked to Korben, who was eyeing the two guards. He looked to his comrade, and Elizabeth gestured that the guards needed to be taken down. The two of them silently crept up to the two utterly oblivious guards.

"How was your night?" the male guard asked.

"Pretty quiet," replied the female guard. "Nothing to report."

"Y'know, our honeymoon's gonna be pretty expensive," said the male guard. "You sure you still wanna go to Zoness?"

"Of course, honey," replied the female guard. "The fighting there's died down, and we can finally go. Besides, compared with prices a few years ago, it's a steal."

"You got that right," said the male guard. He then took the female guard's hand and caressed it. "When we're out of the game, maybe we can finally have a kid or two, a house, a yard, a mini-van." The female guard chuckled.

"Maybe," assured the female guard. Elizabeth then signaled to take them out. The two of them quickly approached the guards from behind the shadows, and Korben grabbed the male guard's neck in a chokehold, crushing the guard's neck: a quick and painless death. Elizabeth, however, attempted to prove correct a movie cliche: she snapped the female guard's neck, and caught her body to keep it from crashing to the ground. However, the female guard was still alive, although her respiratory functions were disabled, and she was in severe pain.

"Crap," Elizabeth whispered. "I thought for sure that'd work." She laid the female guard gently down, who was struggling to breathe. Korben, shaking his and sighing, laid down the male guard's body gently as well, and knelt down to the female guard. Her eyes darted between Elizabeth and Korben. "Sorry, honey." Elizabeth said to the female guard. Korben then grasped the female guard's neck, and began to squeeze it until he crushed it, which killed her. After the deed was done, Elizabeth regained her composure, and said, "Get their uniforms. We're gonna blend in." Korben nodded, and dragged the corpses back into the alley. After a few minutes, Elizabeth and Korben stepped back out, wearing the guards' uniforms and wielding their weapons. Elizabeth examined the female guard's sniper rifle, and was clearly dissatisfied. "What kind of pathetic piece of shit is this?" she complained.

"It's tight," said Korben with a strained voice, patting on his uniform, which was a size too small for him.

"Deal with it," replied Elizabeth. A guard passed by them, whistling a popular tune on the radio. His blaster rifle shimmered in the rising sunlight. He looked to Elizabeth and Korben, and gave them a slight nod. Elizabeth replied with a similar nod. The guard continued with his patrol. After the guard stepped out of sight, Elizabeth turned to Korben, saying, "Let's go to the central building, if we can freaking find it." Elizabeth looked around, trying to ascertain the position of the building Nichols was said to reside. Korben tapped Elizabeth on the shoulder, and pointed to a large, rectangular building in the center of the compound, in the distance in front of them. A command tower was protruding from it. "Alright, let's go through the back."

Sven had watched them perform the HALO jump (High Altitude Low Opening), almost perfectly in unison. Switching his rifle scope to night vision he scanned the LZ, "Sorry about that boss," he whispered into his head set "that's a different route, not the one they used lasT night." As the words left his mouth another guard rounded the corner behind them, he immediately lined up a headshot and squeezed the trigger. The rifle he was carrying was silenced, and the solid projectile didn't produce any light. "So when do we stop sneaking around with knives?" Sven asked running another scan, "I can't kill all of them like that you know, only 29 rounds out of this before I'm back to my K49 energy rifle."

Jasper heard Sven's voice through the communicator. He rolled his eyes at the notion of letting themselves get into a firefight. He and Sandor kept their route and stayed hidden until they came to the side entrance to Nichol's assumed location. He put the rifle across his shoulder and took out his automag laser, opening the door slowly until his head peaked in. He saw a planning room, four possible hostiles, three of which were armed.

"Sandor..." He whispered. "Time to kill!"

He then flung himself into the room, pulling the trigger of his pistol as he did.

Sandor smiled, and darted into the room after Jasper, who already fired and killed one of the hostiles. He took out his knife from its scabbard, which was attached to his combat belt, and threw it at one of the hostiles. Unfortunately, the knife missed completely and rather comically, embedding itself in the wall behind the target. Frustrated, Sandor unleashed his light automatic blaster, with a specially fitted silencer, which almost completely eliminated the sound produced when the weapon fired energy at a target. He sprayed the gun across the general area where the three remaining targets were standing, mowing them down in a hail of blaster fire. He had completely emptied his magazine, and reloaded. He had a most enraged grimace upon his face. His deep breaths did little to soothe his utter anger. He was standing perfectly still for a few moments. Then, Sandor walked towards his knife in the wall, and wrestled it from its place. In a fit of rage, he repeatedly stabbed the corpse of the hostile he threw the knife at. After 10 thrusts, Sandor stopped. "Let's go," he said to Jasper, in a low voice, shuddering from the hate inside him.

Meanwhile, Elizabeth and Korben entered a side door of the building, which gave them access to a flight of stairs.

"Goddamit," said Korben, looking up at the enormity of the staircase.

"Don't worry, Korby," Elizabeth said. "We'll just ask where Nichols is." Korben nodded in agreement, admiring the simple yet brilliant idea. The duo ascended one floor and entered through a door and into a corridor.

Jasper looked for any other h ostiles . Once he was sure no one was coming, he looked at Sandor and points to a stairwell and they bolt up. From the left, a door was kicked open an three hostiles came out of it. Quickly, he line up three shots and dispatched all three of them. His history with the Corneria City Police Department actually taught him something, go figure.

Once at the next floor, Jasper signals for Sandor to stop and comes to room that simply says "private."

"How much you want to bet somebody who knows where Nichols is will be in there?" He says in child-like anticipation. He signals for a breach and when they had gotten.  into position, he kicks the door open.

(Shmi, Elizabeth and Korben were in a totally different part of the building from Jasper and Sandor. After all, you did tell them to go through the side while Jas and Sandor breached the back.)

Sven watched through his thermal scanner as Jasper booted in the door. Slipping his rifle over his shoulder Sven pulled out his side arm and prepared to follow up, only 400 feet between him and half of the team. Silently running he quickly closed the gap between them. "Hey figured you could use some help," he began as screwed a silencer onto the end of his pistol barrel "you first?"

Elizabeth and Korben stepped into the large and almost empty blue corridor, it's concrete floors resonating the clacking sound of the duo's boots. The corridor lights shone on the blue walls and the white floor, and on the left far end of Elizabeth and Korben, a guard was seen walking away from the two of them. Elizabeth noticed the guard. "Hey!" she yelled, her voice bouncing off the walls and into the ears of the distant guard. The guard heeded her call, and looked back to them. He was munching on an asiago cheese bagel, with a canine bite mark on its side. The guard swallowed the morsel of bagel. "Where's Nichols? We have something to report to him."

"Sorry, sir, they don't tell me stuff that important," said the guard. He then opened a door which led to another part of the building, and exited the corridor. The door closed behind him.

"Sonofabitch," said Elizabeth. "Nothing is easy anymore." Korben looked to the right of them, and gestured his head in that direction. Quite some distance away was a door. "Alright, let's go," she said. The duo walked to the door, stepping in perfect union. "You know, those two were probably not that different from us," Elizabeth said. Korben glanced in her direction, and then looked back at the door.

"Who?" asked Korben.

"Those guards we got these uniforms off of," stated Elizabeth. "The ones we killed: well, you killed..." Korben looked back to Elizabeth.

"How?" Korben questioned.

"You know," began Elizabeth. "How they acted. They were close. Real close.."

"They were engaged," said Korben.

"Yeah, they were." Elizabeth then stopped in her tracks. She adjusted her rifle slung over her shoulder so that it would not fall to the ground, and then dug her fists into the pockets of her uniform jacket. Korben, after stepping a few feet farther, noticed Elizabeth had stopped. He too, stopped, and turned around, looking back at Elizabeth. He approached her, clipping his assault rifle onto the pack of the dead guard on his back. Elizabeth leaned her back on the wall, and looked down on her boots. As Korben neared her, he leaned his shoulder against the wall, and crossed his arms. When Elizabeth felt his cold presence near her, she looked to Korben. "You know, I bet Lucas would've loved to see me move on," she said, referencing her deceased husband. She and Lucas were sweethearts since high school, and Lucas's death deeply impacted Elizabeth, all the way to her core. She smiled at Korben, who was visibly confused.

"What?" asked Korben.

"Nah, nah," replied Elizabeth, looking down at the white floor. "It's a stupid idea, you wouldn't like it."

"Maybe not," he said, closing in on Elizabeth. She was persuaded to look back to Korben, and saw her reflection in his sunglasses. "What is it?"

"I like you, Korben," answered Elizabeth. He smiled, an expression he rarely made.

"Thanks," he replied softly.

"Lemme look at those eyes, Korby, those green and blue eyes." As Elizabeth's hand approached Korben's sunglasses, he backed his head away, reluctant to have them removed. "Ah come on, Korby. There's no one else here." Korben sighed, and acquiesced, allowing Elizabeth to remove his sunglasses. His green left eye and blue right eye shimmered as the bright light of the corridor struck them. "There they are," Elizabeth said. Korben's eyes took on a property of their own: they started to glow. Korben's blinking temporarily covered the green and blue glow, but nevertheless, his eyes still cast their light onto Elizabeth's face. Korben relaxed his disposition, and leaned his head closer to Elizabeth's. Elizabeth went in closer to Korben's head as well. They closed their eyes, and were extraordinarily close to kissing each other. But suddenly, the sound of a door being kicked in crashed into the corridor from behind the door they were walking to. The duo regained their composure, and Korben put his sunglasses back on. They rushed to the door at the end of the corridor, and opened it. They looked to their left, and found Jasper and Sandor darting into the kicked-in door.

"Alright!" Jasper said as he looked at the three highly decorated men in the room he entered. "My friend and I need to find somebody and we welcome your assistance."

He then began walking to the men, taking their sidearms as he passed them.  He threw them to Sandor and continued to speak.

"We need to know where Troy Nichols is."

"Why do you think I would tell you that?" One asked. jasper answered by shooting him in the chest.

"Once again, we need to find Troy Nichols, and if you don't comply, my friend here will start chopping off body parts. So, where is he?"

Sandor laughed maniacally as he leapt onto the table the remaining two officers were standing at. He kicked one in the face, and dropped down to the dead officer, looting his body. "Oh, my God..." said the other officer, mortified by Sandor's behavior.

"You shall meet Him soon!" Sandor threatened, pointing his silenced LAB (light automatic blaster), a Magyar-manufactured Sz. 17. at the officer. He stood up and approached the terrified officer. "Answer this man's questions, or be judged by God." Sandor cocked his Sz. 17, and grinned deviously. His beady eyes darted between the remaining two officers.

Meanwhile, Elizabeth and Korben approached the open door, and listened in as Jasper and Sandor threatened the officers into divulging the location of Nichols.

"In the tactics room down the hall!" One of the officers says.

"Thank you." Jasper replies. "Wasn't that easy?"

He motions for Sandor to follow him and moves down the hallway, coming into contact with Elizabeth and Korben.

"Tactics room." he says plainly and keeps walking. Suddenly, an alarm started blaring and enemy soldiers came running down the hallway. Jasper unslings his rifle and holsters his handgun.

"Well, that escalated quickly." He says.

Sandor followed Jasper out of the room, but not before gunning down the remaining officers senselessly. Out in the corridor, Jasper and Sandor stumbled onto Elizabeth and Korben. They were still wearing the captured uniforms from those dead guards outside. "You good, Alex?" Elizabeth asked Sandor. Sandor nodded 'yes'. However, their little reunion was spoiled when the alarm began sounding, and the boots of several guards stomped from the far end of the hallway. Almost impulsively, Sandor hip-fired his Sz. 17 in the direction of the incoming guards, killing scores of them and wounding many more.

"You're all pathetic!" he taunted. Korben covered Sandor as he reloaded, and killed several more guards.

"Looks like our cover's blown," Elizabeth said.

The alarm began blaring as Sven rounded the corner. " For the record, this time it wasn't me."  He said as he ran to catch up with the  rest of the team. "Where are you?" He shouted into his comlink as he fired his handgun. The 20MM nearly tore the poor guard he shot in two, the recoil causing him to stumble. " Right now I'm assuming follow the sounds of gunfire and screaming right?"

Jasper let off a burst from his rifle, taking down quite a few guards as he did so. With no cover in the hallway, it wasn't a gunfight, it was a killing spree. Jasper didn't particularly enjoy it. He knew killing was a necessary and sometimes daily routine with his job, but these people weren't even challenging. He didn't have much of a moral code, but he had just broken the one rule he had: only kill professionals.

He was disgusted that his talent was wasted in this manner.

It wasn't long before the gun fight was over and he saw Kurt running down the hallway. "Nice of you to join us." He said.

"Now if Nichols isn't already evacuated by now, lets head to the tactics room." He commands.

Sandor, after finishing reloading, again aimed his Sz. 17 at the end of the corridor, but to his disappointment, there were no lives to take there. The doorway was crowded with the corpses of multiple guards. "Aww..." he said, his gun and ears lowering from their original peaked positions in sadness. He shook his head. Sandor then dashed to the bodies to loot them all. Korben rolled his eyes. Sandor jumped onto one of the dead bodies, and plucked a wallet from the pant pocket of the body. He opened it, and it revealed a picture of the dead male guard with two other people: another man and a little girl. He tilted his head in curiosity, took out the picture from the wallet, and put it in the hand of the dead guard. Sandor stuffed the wallet in his pocket. Suddenly, Jasper ordered the group to the tactics room. Sandor looked back to Jasper. At that moment, the door reopened, revealing a shotgun-wielding and ready soldier, who completely caught Sandor off-guard. Sandor turned his head to the barrel of the shotgun, and the guard fired, spraying high-energy plasma shot into Sandor's chest. The tykeriel teenager collapsed on his back in agony, screaming in pain. Korben fired on the shotgun soldier, killing him. Korben rushed to Sandor's side, with Sandor's blood pooling under him. His breathing was erratic, and blood was leaking like a sieve from his multiple chest wounds. With every breath he took, he groaned in pain. Korben went to his knees as he slid to Sandor. He took his pack off from his back, and took out from it several medical bandages.

"Liz!" he yelled. Elizabeth proceeded to Korben's side at once. "Hold," ordered Korben, giving the bandages to Elizabeth as she approached him. Korben then took out two medicinal dispensers: one contained painkillers, the other contained a chemical that sterilized the wounds. Korben administers the painkillers to Sandor via the neck, and he was almost instantly relieved of pain. Sandor still wheezed: some of the shot punctured his lungs. Korben then administered the chemical to Sandor. "Bandages," said Korben. Elizabeth gave him the bandages, and started to unwrap the bundle. Elizabeth sat Sandor up, revealing a very bloody back. Sandor's grey v-neck was completely soaked in blood. Korben ripped off Sandor's stained shirt, revealing multiple plasma wounds still pouring out blood. Korben wrapped the bandages around Sandor's body, covering his wounds. "You good?" he asked Sandor once he finished bandaging him up. Sandor, now woozy from his substantial blood loss, nodded his head. Korben put Sandor's arm across his shoulders, and brought him up to his feet. He could barely stand up straight, let alone walk. Korben then elected to carry him: a rather easy feat for the strong beaver. "Med-pod," he stated, referring to his need to treat Sandor's lung puncture. "Now!" At that moment, another guard entered the door - it was the asiago bagel-eating guard, who had a pistol in one hand and his half-eaten bagel in the other. Elizabeth grabbed his gun, and pulled his head towards her knee. The guard's head hit Elizabeth's knee with such force, he fell onto the floor, among his dead comrades. He held his head in pain, his bagel and pistol sitting beside him. Elizabeth pointed her powerful rifle at the guard's head.

"Where's the infirmary?!" she yelled, the guard in absolute terror.

"Through this door!" he stammered, pointing to the door from whence he came. "First left, three doors down! It's marked 'Infirmary'!"

"Thanks," Elizabeth said, knocking the guard unconscious with the butt of her rifle. "Jasper," she said, turning to Jasper behind her. "We need to take a detour."

Jasper yelled in frustration. The whole plan had spiraled hopelessly out of control. "Alright." He said reluctantly to Elizabeth. "Take him, but if Nichols gets away, this job is a bust."

He looks over his shoulder to make sure no one was following them, then presses forward to the infirmary. He closes the door, pulls a chair in front of it and holds his rifle, guarding them. Nichols was getting away, no doubt. But, even with the lacking moral outlook, Jasper felt like Sandor was his responsibility. He didn't want to see him die. Korben better get to work fast. He thought.

"Hurry!"

Jasper, Elizabeth, Korben, and Sandor rushed to the infirmary. Jasper opened the door, closed it, and pulled a heavy chair in front of it. He covered the door with his rifle. Korben told Elizabeth to ready the Med-pod. Selecting a few options on its interface, Elizabeth opened the Med-pod, ready to receive Sandor. Korben gently laid Sandor down. He was drifting in and out of consciousness, and was bleeding from the mouth. Korben closed the Med-pod, and selected the option labeled "Internal Injuries". He then selected "Lung Injuries". The pod then started to glow dark blue, a sign of its healing process. Its low hum had a somewhat soothing effect on all within the room. A few moments later, the pod made a short, high-pitched tone as it opened. "Dinner's ready," Sandor groaned as the Med-pod unveiled him, his lungs completely healed.

"The wonders of modern medicine," commented Elizabeth. Sandor sat up, and stumbled on his two feet. Korben offered Sandor his Sz. 17, to which he graciously accepted with a dastardly smile.

"We're done," Korben announced.

"Well then, let's go." He says, and swings open the door, running down the hallway. At the end of the hallway, there was a large window. Jasper shot it three times, and then jumps through it. Outside, Nichols' ship was already taking off. Soldiers poured in from all directions. In frustration, he holds the trigger of his rifle and sprays the area. His friends came to his aid, but Nichols was already gone.

He falls on his back and sighs.

No pay and a dishonorable discharge.

Chapter 2

Jasper sat at the counter of "Mask and Stripes." A bar in the heart of Corneria City. He had been there every day since Nichols' escape, drinking himself nearly to death. He looked out at the collection of people in the dimly lit room. Low lifes. As the heavy music played, he put a 500 credit note on the counter and gave it to the bar tender.

"Give me all of the alcohol I can get for this." He says. The bar tender hesitantly takes the money and starts pouring various drinks. As he sits, the T.V shows a news report of Nichols getting away. Jasper, angry and drunk, stands up on the stool he is sitting on and points at the newscast.

"Hey, I was supposed to kill that guy! But I couldn't so I'm sitting here drinking my life away with you losers!"

A sea of voices responded, but nothing could be understood. Getting off balance, he falls off of his stool.

"Uhhg."
