Zootopia (2016)

I was fortunate enough to get out and see Zootopia today, and I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it.  Don't get me wrong - I knew I was going to enjoy it going in; I just didn't expect to like it this much.

It's wonderfully clever in its social commentary and subsequent juxtapositioning of it, its humor is astute and nails the laughter each and every time, the characters are empathetic and likable, the buddy-cop staple tropes are alive and well, and the design of the world of the film is stunning more often than not.  The overarching story captivated my interest and held me for the duration, and coupled with everything mentioned previously, it was one hell of a time.

I'd recommend it quite highly, in case that was not already evident.

I was heavily skeptical as I'm completely disenchanted with Disney as of late, but after watching it I can say I also quite enjoyed it. It's not ground-breaking or anything, at least to me, but it was a fun experience. The animation was nice and the little bunny cop is cute. The sloth scene is superb. I liked what they were trying to say about predators and prey - it can relate to a couple of things in our world too.

Thanks for the heads up - I didn't know preorders were open already.  Chalk up another. :p

More and more concept art from the film is filtering its way into public consumption.  Here's some art from when the story was originally much darker and focused primarily upon Nick's character.  Having lived in a basement apartment before, I can begrudgingly attest to the accuracy of the artwork.

Quote

ZOOTOPIA POST #4: NICK’S APARTMENT. In the earlier version of the movie, the story revolves around Nick’s point of view instead of Judy’s. He had a sequence showing his dingy apartment at the basement of a building. I had to pull up references from photos of utility rooms, dismal service floors, and abandoned building basements to design his space. Fun.

I'm a sucker for anthropomorphism and animation, so this movie was a goldmine for me. Not only did it have that, but a wonderfully executed message, great pacing, believable characters, pretty environments, and an engaging plot that always had another twist in it, and another nod to something earlier in the movie. I'm seriously considering watching this one again, and definitely buying it when it comes out.

I saw it today, and it was one of the best movies I've seen in a long time! :)

This movie... Wow. As a sucker for talking animals of mostly any variety, this movie had me feeling like a little kid the entire time.

As for the message, I found it surprisingly grown up for a "kid's movie" and I loved it. I like when a movie appeals to small children and the child in everyone while still teaching a relevent message. It shows that the creativity was meant for more than one generation of film watchers.

Lastly, the humor. Just like the lesson, I think the humor was written with more than one age group in mind. Hell, my parents were laughing the whole way through.

All in all, I loved it. I will definitely watch it again and I am currently contemplating purchasing it.

Gotta pay more attention to the forums, had no idea this thread existed. I saw the movie a while back now, and I gotta say, I thought going in I was simply going to enjoy the humor and maybe a few characters here and there. Though by the time the movie was done, I honestly felt like a kid again. I cared about the story, absolutely loved the characters, and was pleased the overarching message. Both kids and adults can enjoy watching it, which is all you should hope for from a film like this, but it ends up giving you so much more than you expected.

@OneUnder, that's an interesting find. Perhaps one day do you think we could hope for a "spinoff" of sorts where we hear the story from Nick's point of view? I ask that because I wonder how much of the movie was completed when the original trailer was released. They changed the focal point of the narrative (and who knows how much of the original story) in less than a year, which needless to say is impressive.

The movie handled the clue-finding process immeasurably well IMO.  The small pieces of inconsequential evidence, chance encounters, and the time limit imposed on it all made it all that more pressing and enjoyable.  The red herring(s) thrown in were both unexpected and expertly crafted.

+1 to this.  Any film that can transport me into its universe effectively is great in my book, but there's something about Zootopia that leaves me wanting more and more.  The world it sets up is such an intriguing and whimsical place, with its own share of issues to deal with.  The humor was definitely one of the highlights and had me laughing out loud more often than not.  The ingenuity and slyness of (spoiler) this scene had me dying.

I couldn't agree more on both points.  The fact that the film came out so admirably with a change that late into the development cycle is a wonder for sure, but I'm glad that things turned out the way that they did!  Here's some more concept art of when the predator class was still set to wear shock-collars that I came across.

To complement Orange's post, here's one of the more adorable pieces of fanart that I've seen around as of late.  (Sort of spoiler-y I suppose.)

Saw it a few weeks back with my dad, little sister and like, 8 other girls lol

Not a single one except my sister knew I was a furry, even at the end of it all. Succsesssss...

On a different note (if you couldn't tell by my avatar lol) I really found one specific character endearing because well, he's basically me.

All in all, I enjoyed every bit of it, even after finding out who the main villian was halfway through the movie and what all was actually going on in terms of the climax and everything. Been watching too much cinemasins and cop shows I guess, lol.

Good lord what an absolutely fantastic film. From the art direction and heartfelt plot to the believable characters and incredible universe, Disney Animation absolutely knocked it out of the park. I just barely managed to contain the hype when seeing it with non-furry friends (they were absolutely floored with it too).

If you guys haven't been following the scrapped version of the film, it was torched pretty late in production. People have been nicknaming it Zoodystopia for it's much heavier, darker plot. I'd definitely recommend looking into it, although I highly doubt it would have seen as much commercial success had they continued production.

Either way, I'm going to see it in theaters again because what a fucking masterpiece.

I have just come back from the movie and I have to say it is utterly spectacular. Not because of the artwork, not because of the character interactions or how well they were portrayed (but these were also hysterical and well done) but the true hidden beauty of this movie was the meaning of it.

How they identified the issues of stereotyping and racism, the majority vs. Minority, and how these all play into a society was really interesting to see on the screen portrayed as a Kids film. I think Disney intended for many adults to watch this movie. With all the references to movies, for example the Breaking Bad reference or the Godfather one, I think would go over a child's head. Disney wanted to get a message out about the world today and the problems we face against one another. Stereotyping and fear that we all have in the backs of our heads needs to be ended. What is really spooky to see the Bellsworth character be really Naziesque, for lack of a better word. No child would think or even relate that to that kind of extremism. I think zootopia really did a good job on this issue and I hope more parents and children will see it and learn from this.

And as much as I loved Nick in the movie, my spirit animal is that OG fennec fox like shieeeeet.

I utterly bursted out laughing whenever he spoke in an OG voice, threw on the shades and necklace, and threw up a hand sign as rap music played, then drove off.

Holy cow, that had me tearing up whenever it happened!

The overall moral of this film...kinda shocked me. But it shouldn't, should it?

But i have to admit, it was funny and entertaining.

That means they did a good job with it. :p

If anything, the main moral that I felt that the film successfully conveyed was to not judge individuals based upon who they are, but rather what they do.  The way the movie manifests this is sometimes overt, sometimes implied, but always interesting.

Well, seeing as the DVD is released, I felt as if I should revisit this thread... To say that the  DVD is released.

Wow, I'm such a moron.

I didn't expect to like the movie as much as I did because let's face it, animated animal movies are bloody repetitive.

Say...Rio, the animation was amazing but I could've sworn I have seen that type of story a bunch of times...

But Zootopia was different, and actually gave itself worldbuilding.

And Nick x Judy forever! <3

((this reply may cause this topic to get locked since it's over two months (do i remember that rule correctly? XD) but i needed to say this ))

This is easily my favorite movie of 2016. This is to films featuring animals what Frozen is to princess movies IMO. It's new, fun, and has good story too. Anyone will definitely enjoy it :D
