Ellipzocore
I have had this idea floating around my head for the past week: Why not do something useful on the computer and help people out with math?I realize the struggle is real for many in math class, in high school and in college. As a math major in college who does math for fun, this is a great opportunity for me to review everything in mathematics from what numbers are to vector calculus and discrete math, and also help others whilst doing it. I feel like I can help make mathematics something that isn't the most awful thing in existence and make it at least the second-most awful thing. My goal is simple, yet extremely huge: create a library of videos for all fields in mathematics with the sole purpose of helping/tutoring people with said subjects. Yes, all of it will be free.I some obstacles to overcome before the idea comes to fruition. Firstly, I don't exactly know how I want to format the YouTube videos. I have thrown the idea for the videos to follow a format similar to Crash Course, but a friend of mine pointed out that it might not be very helpful. I also need to come up with a way to do the videos similarly to Khan Academy, where I write out the problems as I explain them, and walk through the process, alongside the fact that I don't feel like editing videos like crazy. I have been perusing Amazon for a simple digital pen-pad that allows me to write in a picture-editing software without having to use my mouse, because I suck at that.I must note: I really do like Khan Academy, as do many people. However, I want to focus solely on mathematics, and I want to explain stuff in my own way. I am sarcastic, I am sure I will be making lame math jokes, and I will most likely ass- I mean add - some mature elements to really drive my videos to a more high school/college audience.I am not doing this all by myself. I am shitty at organizing huge projects because I focus too hard on making them perfect, thus making the process much more difficult for me than it probably actually is. This is where you come in. Yes, you. This is all for you, so throw me some ideas so I can make this project as inclusive as I can get it, because I know that a project like this takes more than two people in order to be awesome, and the fact this project would get kind of stagnant if you couldn't have a say in the way the project is done. And remember, this is going to take some time, as this idea is still pretty much in its infancy and I have school and work and all that jazz. Clearwater
Hey, this sounds like an immensely good idea seeing as how my main struggle in maths in geometry.

Hidi
One of the biggest problems, to me, the education system has delivering math, at least around here, is that they sacrifice teaching "math" to try and phrase it in a more supposedly practical, appealing way to kids. As a result, you end up with crap like this:

As a result, you end up with crap like this:Wow that was bad. Very mildly amusing, but isn't good for teaching math. I would adjust the problem into a new one, omitting the extreme silliness, and simply ask how wide the area is. I might take it a step further and ask, given a certain volume, how much it would cost to put in the border after the pool has been placed. That would be more practical than "Hurr durr Jay-Z and Kanye in a math problem hurr durr." Edited October 14, 2015 by riccofox96
Arashikage
What's the point if Khan Academy exists? He basically covers all bases when it comes to math.
Arminius H O Fiddywinks
Hah! Education...Plus, I wouldn't see the practicality of this. Aren't there loads of tutors in the Universe, as well as extra help teachers could provide before/after school and/or during lunch?
Ellipzocore
What's the point if Khan Academy exists? He basically covers all bases when it comes to math.Yes, yes he does. However, he doesn't provide all information, and they have a history of not trying to help people visualize and conceptualize what is going on in mathematics. I will be going all out with as much information as possible to help people get a grasp on what is happening when they do something with, for example, matrices or vectors.Hah! Education...Plus, I wouldn't see the practicality of this. Aren't there loads of tutors in the Universe, as well as extra help teachers could provide before/after school and/or during lunch? Just giving more options for people. Perhaps the reason they aren't getting the subject is that the teacher doesn't do a very good job at engaging their students. Perhaps they don't want to pay for a tutoring service. You don't necessarily have to want another math-help project online, but I am not forcing anyone to use it. It may not be the most practical thing on Earth, but at least it is another option for people if they are struggling. Dr. Orange
Will your math focus be primarily towards math-related subjects or just to the cores of math? I'm taking a Physics class that I'm slowly not understanding. Going to be diving into Thermodynamics soon and wouldn't mind extra help.

Going to be diving into Thermodynamics soon and wouldn't mind extra help.I will be doing a section entirely for word problems, because that is, in and of itself, a major source of concern for many students. Seeing how physics is entirely word problems, I don't see why I shouldn't go over it. I am not really familiar with thermodynamics, but I guess I can at least try to read into it and see what I can do.
