Budget gaming PC help

SF Redd

Question

Hey everyone, so I'm somewhat new to PC gaming, having gamed on consoles most of my life. I've been wanting to get into PC gaming for a while though, but my biggest problem with it, bar the price, is the fact that I don't know what components are better than different components. I currently have a small budget of £365, and I found a PC with these specs within my price range: http://imgur.com/jbx34bK

The PC I use right now is this one http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=c03799414

If I buy the computer, I plan to put the hard drive with windows 8.1 and the RAM from my current PC into the new one, put the hard drive and RAM from the new one into my old one, then sell my old one. Can I do this? Are the hard drives and RAM compatible between the PC's?

Also, like I said, I'm now sure how good exactly these specs are. I don't expect to be maxing out(or even playing) Crysis on this new PC, but I'd hope to play Skyrim and Elder Scrolls Online at 60 fps. Will this be possible with the PC I'm considering? Do you have any advice?

Thanks in advance.

That's fair.  I edited my post a few times while you were replying, and I'd like to reiterate the point of watching the build videos that DZ and I posted.  It can't hurt to have an idea of how things go together, right?

Your latter question is a good one, and I'm not entirely sure if it would make things easier or not.  You'll still have to go through the difficulty of uninstalling and installing proper drivers though, and being that I'd rate building a computer as being significantly more straightforward and simplistic than working around software hiccups, which can turn into a nightmare rather quickly, I would be cautious about it.

DZ was right on the money when he said you should be going with something like SteamOS until you can purchase a license for Windows 10 IMO.

I got the computer, switched RAM & hard drive, installed and uninstalled drivers, but I can't connect to the Internet. Whenever I want to connect it says "no connections available." And troubleshooting isn't helping. Any advice?

It seems like you're trying to connect wirelessly.  Is your wireless card properly installed, are the antenna on the back of your case in a spot that gives them somewhat decent reception, and have you installed the drivers for said wireless card as of yet?

Yeah, I installed the drivers through disk and attached the antennas. Their positioning should be ok at the least, as my old PC's weaker wireless was in the same area and could connect fine. Curiously, the device driver won't show in my device manager, but if I try to install it again with a disk it says it's already there and that I have to delete it to install it again. I tried this a few times but the same problem arose.

It is possible that the hardware for the wireless card itself is defective, as it should be working if the drivers are installed correctly.  Does it pop up in device manager?  Is there a physical switch on the card itself or perhaps an LED status light that relays information?  Have you read the card's manual just to ensure it doesn't have any weird setup quirks?

Well it took quite a bit of trial and error, but I finally managed to get Windows 10 installed That seemed to fix every problem I've been having, although my desktop has seen less barren days (only the recycling bin, chrome, and now skyrim on it, absolutely nothing else). I think all my old software such as steam,, flash, my games, photoshop, paint.net, ect. are still on it, as my 1TB hard drive says it's only got about 500 GB left, which around the same as before I upgraded, although none of it shows in the control panel. Maybe bad data or something, or I have to recover it? Idk but I'll figure it out, but in the mean time I should really install my anti-virus.

But really, thanks to everyone who weighed in; every piece of advice was helpful and I've taken it all into account. I'd probably have been lost without you guys!

I'll post a pic or two once I've sorted some stuff out. The case is bloody huge compared to my old one!

Mission accomplished, support team!

I'm glad to hear that everything went relatively well, and an arguably minimal amount of troubleshooting has been required so far.  As for a chunk of your HDD not showing up, maybe the drive partition with your applications and files on it hasn't been assigned a drive letter.  See if it shows up in Disk Management (concise outline below).

Hold on, stop the celebrations… my usual luck has arrived…

When I now turn the PC on, it'll load normally, until it gets to the point where it would usually allow me to log in, where now the screen turns completely black, with only the cursor on screen. It stays like this indefinitely.

I'm so stressed with this… but I shan't give up!
