I wanted to create my own language, but I ddin't know where to start, and my motivation to do so was nonexistent because I didn't know what it could be used for. As someone on here may or may not know, I am in the process of brainstorming a large and ultimately lore-heavy fan-fiction for the Starfox universe (The Great Lylatian Civil War). I wanted to borrow my friend's language for use in the story, but he has been very busy and hasn't been able to work on all of the essentials for his language. Thus, I am forced to get rid of using a language, or make an ever more immersive lore by actually creating my own language. So, as someone with not much else to do other than homework, I decided to go with the latter. EDIT: I have reworked the writing system. The old method with the table and CV pair symbols was horrendously inefficient, clunky, and unnecessary considering they were all just diphthongs. I really was doubting the system from the very beginning, and I finally decided to do away with it for a FAR more efficient system that I have in mind. I honestly do not think this will be tonal, either, because those are bitches to learn for Westerners. They are the last two on the right, That and Shat. Sorry about that, I copied an older alphabet version by accident. ***I like what I have now. These are the letters used in the alphabet, and most likely will not change unless I think even longer and harder about them and judge it necessary. LEARN YOU THE PHONOLOGY AND DIACRITICS Reveal hidden contents Okay, so, you want to learn the phonology? First, I must introduce you to the concept of diacritical marks. They are simply symbols written above or below a letter to change its pronunciation. Also, you get to learn the ACTUAL NAMES OF LETTERS! LEIK WOW! This language has a nice and easy-to-learn diacritics system designed to be convenient. There are rules: 1) Vowels come in different sounds. Luckily for us, I thought of that. Long vowels get two dots above the letter, shortened ones get one dot. 2) Consonants get dots beneath the letter to change its pronunciation. This may be subject to change at a future date. --- Phonology. Below is the set of sounds in the language. Format: [LETTER] - [NAME] - [PRONUNCIATION] - At - Pronounced like "a" in "far." - Atee - Pronounced like the "a" in "cat." - Ato - Pronounced like "u" in "bud." - Kat - Pronounced like "k" in "kitten." - Khat - Pronounced like "k" but from the back of the throat. - Dat - Pronounced like "d" in "day." - Datz - Pronounced like "ds" in "woods." - Et - Pronounced like "ay" in "May." - Etee - Pronounced like "e" in "bed." - Gat - Pronounced like "g" in "go." - Hat - Pronounced like "h" in "hat." - Hkat - Like Hat, but from the throat. - It - Pronounced like "ee" in "cheese." - Itee - Pronounced like "i" in "bid." - Ito - Pronounced like "i" in "ride." - Chat - Pronounced like "ch" in "cherry." - Shat - Pronounced like "sh" in "shotgun." - Lat - Pronounced like "l" in "life." - Mat - Pronounced like "m" in "mouth." - Nat - Pronounced like "n" in "not." - Ot - Pronounced like "o" in "mode." - Oto - Pronounced like "oo" in "root." - Rat - Pronounced like "r" in "road." - Rrat - A rolled "r" sound. - Sat - Pronounced like "s" in "saddle." - Zat - Pronounced like "z" in "zoo." - Zhat - Think of "sh" and "z" mixed together. - Tat - Pronounced like "t" in "tiger." - That - Pronounced like "th" in "thick." - Thato - Pronounced like "th" in "this." THE NUMBER SYSTEMTM Reveal hidden contents Basic Algebra. The variables are in terms of Ot and At. Essentially used like x and y in math. This might be subject to change, especially with regards to the nth-roots. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Why did I choose the letters I chose? I see Cornerians as a dog-like alien race. I know they have snouts, which means they don't have as well-developed lips. So letters that involve lips such as P, F, B, etc, are not in the language. By manipulating the tongue in such a way, one can make all the vowel sounds with little lip movement. Think of the sounds dogs make, but with a well-developed tongue. I am open to discussion to modify the language further, if need be. My goals for this language are adding some more nuances so as to give depth to the language. Accents, rules for shorter vowel sounds, rules for words starting with vowels, etc. are all in my list of to-do's for this language. I am new to conlanging, so do not expect this to be perfect. I was discussing this with someone in the chat the other day about how avian-like races could feasibly make these sounds if they have a larynx or some alien body part. In the briefings before and after the missions, particularly the first mission. In the top lefthand corner of the screens that pop up during the conversation, you can see green shapes. Ellipzocore Posted July 23, 2016 Author Share Posted July 23, 2016 A lot of them are Roman characters, some seem to be Cyrillic, one is a math symbol, one is a number, and the rest are made up. I am considering removing the characters for [SH] and merging them with [CH] and also the ones for [TH] and merging them with [T].
