What-If scenario: Corneria's Yamato

In the anime series, "Space Battleship Yamato", an old WWII-era battleship was converted into a spaceship. Now if the Cornerian Army or Space Dynamics pulled off the same move on one of their old naval ships (you gotta expect that at one point in time they probably had a seafaring navy in the past) would they get the same results? What would it look like?  would there be any use for such a thing? would the Cornerians have any mindset to do such a project? what would they think of it?

I would imagine that it would get destroyed by 400 starfighters after being sent to destroy as many Venomian ships as possible in a suicide mission.

Why would they turn a sea bearing ship to a spaceship? A boat isn't designed for space. 

It seems to be a waste of money to do such a task.

reasons unknown perhaps? or out of desperation

also they wont use the original metal in the hull. I mean they would just convert and modernize it with modern technology and materials while keeping the original dimensions and overall shape of the original ship. That's pretty much what they did to yamato in the anime
