This was splendidly delightful! Not too serious and not too silly, and FULL OF CHARACTER. HGNNNNN this is what I've always wanted.

There are some obscure references in here to older SF stuff.

Ashura Benimaru Itoh did the concept art, so of course he had to drop a reference to his old SNES comic, and in a very Itoh way (he loves weird string instruments) he does so by having a character playing a Harp Guitar:

The Star Fox Super Weekend TIME UP! screen gets referenced as the GAME OVER screen in Falco's video game:

And Peppy's cameo in Steel Diver gets referenced with this Steel Diver sub on his desk:

Fay reference?

Overall I'm very impressed, the voice acting and everything felt quality. The civilian character designs in particular impressed me, even as background characters they were pretty varied. The writing was pretty solid; feels very Nintendo.

Honestly one of the references that surprised me the most was the one to Sauria. Figured Nintendo had brushed that game under the rug for the most part.

No references to Miyu though :(

That was...weird. Animation wise, that is. Still, Production IG is a strange and experimental company so I guess its par for what they do. Still, that was really cool and I enjoyed it! Slippy a best. Although now I'm curious as to what's up with Peppy and General Pepper.

Also happy to see Sauria mentioned. It brings me much relief.

I am so delighted by this. I want more! All the character and charm I ever wanted from the series. Let these guys keep doing what they're doing!

If you're interested, the short is now available in the following European languages:

Unfortunately, Nintendo's DutchPortuguese, and Russian YouTube channels do not have localised dubs, and posted the English language version instead. Additionally, there is no differences from Nintendo's British, AustralianFrench Belgian, FlandersSwiss German, and Austrian channels except for localised ratings and blurbs.

Just watched the german one and loved it! Sure one or two things were slightly translated differently, but still lost nothing of it's quality!

Can we please just get a Starfox anime?

Would pay copious amounts of money for this.

Ho-lee crap, that was AMAZING. My mind was blown away by the quality of it! Especially the voice acting, that was top-notch.

Also, did anyone notice towards the end of the short, when Peppy was on comms, his surname was spelt wrong? It was spelled 'Hair' instead of 'Hare'. Photo later.

I kid you not, it's the same voice actors from in the game. They do sound so much better when doing natural dialong, though. I'm guessing reading off a few pages of one-liners is tough to do convincingly.

Also, on a subsequent watch I noticed that Harp Guitar Dude seems to be singing the SNES Corneria BGM, though we hear it starting here:

Well yeah, reading actual scripts with characters bantering back and forth in a natural conversation is easier to sound natural than single lines that are meant to be played ambiantly. I imagine the more story-heavy parts of SFZ will sound more like the anime by comparison.

Hey guys! I found another small Easter egg! Around when the Star Fox team take off from the Great Fox and you see the Arwing's cockpit, it says "Good luck!!" which is a reference to the SNES Star Fox and Star Fox 64. 58045c955019033ca12e8af1eb153b85.png

I love the civilian design in this XD  Its truly itoh's style. The gloves, the faces, and the poses. XD

I love the references! (Still wish we'd have had a Fara reference though. And well lolipops for pepper)

Its not surprising he went for a character wearing western-ish clothes with a weird guitar considering how much of a guitar nuts he is :

The best part about the anime though is that, it was actually good. Not like the best thing ever, but it was really satisfying to watch and interesting!

I'm really hoping there is more coming!

It shares the color scheme with the Famicom, although it's a bit too blurry to tell precisely what it is in that shot.
