Adventures, but only for the damn staff aiming and a few puzzles.

Adventures. The Trial of Fear lasted nearly an hour for me because of bad joysticks and a high dosage of caffeine.

I'm playing Zero now and its looking pretty damn hard at times. Of course it still has to topple the SNES game, which could just get enraging at times, but we'll see!

Star Fox. It took me a long time to get past route level 3, but it was SOOOOO satisfying when I did.

Yes, Starwing sure is the hardest game of the series for me...and still one of my favourites.

Don't be good at this game and then fail at Andross Level 2 or 3..it will punish you for this without any mercy.

Guys, guys, we're forgetting the "Dark Souls of Star Fox games" as the big man Iwata coined the phrase himself:

Diligence, perseverance, and the shield power up.

Man, does anyone else miss  the shield powerup?

As of current, Zero. Though when I first get into Star Fox SF1 was a bitch. I replayed it recently, got to Venom without dying once and then Phantron proceeded to wreck my shit, so that one's still got some hard left in it after all these years.

One of my big complaints about SFZ is that they took away Wing Damage and replaced it with a new system that makes it way too damn easy to lose laser upgrades, which makes beating some bosses (*COUGH*AQUAROSA*COUGH*ANDROSS*COUGH*) a bitch without them.

The SNES game still takes the cake as being the most difficult in my book, although I haven't played anything beyond the initial Corneria level in Zero.

Haven't played Zero, but all of the reviewers I watch say that the game is pretty difficult, but mostly due to the controls and unfamiliarity with said controls.  Once you get the hang of it, it's not so hard.  Also will agree with DZComposer in what I've seen, way too easy to lose those hyper lasers.  It should be four hits with the standard and retro Arwings, while the Black Arwing loses the hyper lasers after two hits.  Four hits are fatal, so no need for it to keep the hits the regular Arwings should take before losing it.  At the least you don't lose twin lasers unless you die.  So that would probably make it a bit more fair.

Anyways, the original is what I found hardest(Haven't played 2, waiting for those licensing issues to be solved so it can be released in an official form to play it).  But, it's due to the controller I think.  SNES controllers are NOT good for 3D games of Star Fox's type.  Sure, Stunt Race FX was one of my favorite and most played games, but it's a racer, not a space shooter.  Those who can manage it to do spectacular stuff on SFSNES have my full respect.  Heck, just beating Venom on the lowest difficulty is a challenge for me(I only beat Phantron once on the easy difficulty, and got completely wrecked before I even reached Andross during the corridor section to that fight, and had to face Phantron again after the first time I died.  Now THAT is unfair, not having a checkpoint after that fight.).  At least, when I last played the game.  I never owned it, just rented it.  If I owned it, I might have become a better player over time.  Oh well, no use crying over spilled milk.  But I have never had as much difficulty with a Star Fox game as SFSNES since then.  The only reason I don't consider SFAd as a hard game is because it isn't for me.  It was quite the cake walk until I faced Andross.  I had such trouble with it I had to look up a guide.  Once I learned what I needed to do, the fight was cake(And mind you, I had never played a Zelda game before then, which from research I've done, SFAd is similar to a Zelda game).  SFSNES?  Nuh uh, no amount of guidance will make that game easier if the controls are a slight bit sluggish.  And rolling in that game...  The closest I've come to that much difficulty in rolling recently was in SF643D's versus mode, when a wing is destroyed.  Otherwise, I can roll easy in SF64 and SF643D and others where a double tap is needed on the tilting buttons, but SFSNES?  I couldn't even roll to save my life.  Doable?  Yes, easy?  Oh slag no.  When you can't even do the simple save your tail move with ease, you have a hard game on your hands.

SF Command

it's so hard i never finished it :^)

Guess I'll be a loner here and say that SF64 had a few difficult bunches IMO. Never really played the older games though. Some levels in SF64 I could go through fine, but others weren't that easy as I had quite a bit of trouble keeping the wings intact. It's been a bit since I last played it but I guess it's harder than Assault. That one kinda felt pretty easier. Adventures wasn't that difficult either save for odd aiming controls and as already mentioned, Test of Fear.

It depends on what paramters we're setting!

SNES Starfox is just hard all around. Once you get good at it, Sector Z and Fortuna are still damn challenging runs to go through. I'm pretty sure 100%ing the hard route is just about impossible too (fuck off, Fortuna!)

Doing a run of SF2 without letting Corneria take damage can be tough.

SF64 is difficult as hell on Expert mode. It's also got a really high skill ceiling, much higher than is needed to beat the game or get medals.

Starfox Adventures is hard to stay awake through HEYOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Assault's gold medals are HAIR pulling frustrating. Some levels provide amble enemies and pacing to rack up your combo meter, but the giant fuckhuge sandbox levels are awful and require serious enemy placement memorization to pull off. Also the pain flinching from damage gets you wrecked hard.

Command is hard to not throw out of a window kek

Zero ranges from modest to fairly hard depending. Aquarosa is unfair bullshit, the Venom Star Wolf fight is crazy to do fast enough for a medal, Andross is pretty difficult too. Otherwise, it has a lot of side stuff which is looking damn grueling. 70 medals arghhhh.

I'd say it's a toss up between SNES and Zero. SNES definitely has more of a,for lack of a better word, more "old school" kind of challenge. Definitely very punishing and dying late in the game is frustrating. Zero is a much more technically difficult game, especially do do well. I struggled particularly with the

Spoiler

return to Corneria and the Gigarilla fight until I figured it out.

Some of that challenge can be attributed to the controls, but not all of it. The game is designed with challenge in mind, which is important.

Adventures. That button mashing extravaganza against Musclefoot was the worst.

Zero being new has a lot to do with it feeling difficult. Getting high score medals is always tough at first for non all range mode levels, in that sense it feels a lot like 64.

The same is true for certain boss fights. Once you have a good strategy for how to handle certain attacks, you don't fall for their predictable patterns anymore and immediately go after their exposed weakpoints. What used to be a pain in the ass is now second nature.

I find SF64 to be pretty bullshit on Expert Mode, particularly Katina, Solar, and ESPECIALLY Venom from Bolse. That stage is near impossible to beat without losing your wings.

As for SF1, for anyone is frustrated with Sector Z's girders, here's a trick I found out to get past them:

I always hated that the game knew if you were trying to cheese the girders by throwing that attack drone at you.

Well either way you're likely not going to be able to hold the shield for long because of both that and the girders themselves are so hard to dodge if you don't use the trick.

I know, just sad the game throws the drone at you so you cant take the shield to the boss fight.
