Anticipating a Star Fox Title for the Switch

Okay, so we've gotten a meh title for the Wii-U for Star Fox, and the Switch is coming out soon. That means that there could be a Star Fox title coming for this console.

What do you people think this Star Fox game for the Nintendo Switch should be like? Should it actually be what Star Fox: Zero was aiming for, a good, updated Star Fox game with awesome motion controls? Or should it just steer clear of Zero's goal, which the game itself fell far short of? Or, should it have an entirely new formula?

I'd take a bigger, better Zero. Continue the story after Andross's defeat, throw in several missions and branching paths and maybe a classic control option for those who didn't care for them.

Unoservix is gonna kill me...

I would like the series to be more episodic and story-driven, along with alternating dog fight and land battle segments reminiscent of Assault.

I would also like to see more developed, layered characters on both sides.

Pretty much what Shmibli and Arwingfan said.

And also, put Algy back and make Falco racist to monkeys for my amusement.

Second this. I think a mix between 64/Zero and Assault would be pretty fun.

@ArwingFan @Shmibli7 @StarMaverick @Pgpaw3 Wow, we all somehow know what each other wants. It's amazing!

As a slight deviation, give it the most hardcore rock music with pounding drums that you can think of, like this, for example:

In a nutshell, we learned many things with Zero: never do a "reset", "reimagining" or "rewhatchamacallit" to Starfox... ever; we should never trust Platinum handling with any Nintendo series; the lack of one character or important aspect can cost the game's success or failure; poor character design always spells failure in the game as a whole; among other lessons. Hopefully, all of this put together will equal a better understanding for our expectations for a Starfox for Switch: most of us want a post-Assault game that actually looks and feels like a Starfox game, not just some sloppy little thing that was rushed through without much though.

I like those ideas.  Especially if Star Fox gets more members such as Miyu, team Star Wolf will need to keep up.

I'm not opposed to a reboot, because there's a lot you can clean up and do. Just a shame Zero was a poor attempt, because another reboot on the Switch would probably shake consumer confidence in the IP.

Still, Zero isn't all bad. It sort of mixes the interdimensional weirdness from SNES and the general plot of SF64, so a new story in this new continuity certainly has potential.

@Storminator I can see why they did it, it was a new game after a long drought and the 64AdvAssCom canon was getting shaky. That said if done right this could give us a clean state for a strong continuity that could even reintroduce the post-64 content in a more tactful way.

Yeah, exactly my line of thinking. In terms of gameplay, maybe they can take cues from modern flight games ala Ace Combat, like, idk... Being able to cycle through selected targets in target view? I'm shocked you can't actually do that in Zero, because that's a basic feature all flight games have!

A longer version of sf64 with more to offer and no weird tablet motion control.

I finally managed to fully explain what I really want for a new Star Fox in a comment on GameExplain's video:

I told 'em this:  This one may not be a "fit" per say, but, Star Fox. Simply because with much higher graphical quality, and no major need for a system-defining gimmick anymore, this is Star Fox's biggest opportunity to not only fix the mistakes that Zero made, but to up the ante: Go completely ballistic and balls-to-the-walls, filling the screen with intense sequences of major battles, filled with spectacular effects like camera-shaking, motion-blur, detailed destruction, and explosions that will make Micheal Bay crap his pants. Make the player feel this awesomeness with the HD Rumble capturing every bump, every step, and every laser blast that leaves the player's ship. Don't forget the characters either. They are famous for their corny lines. Make 'em just as corny, if not more, BUT, make sure they are delivered in the best way possible. No laziness, no rush here. Lastly, make the music complement the level of sheer epicness and intensity that's happening. Don't cut corners. Hire a band to perform for you. Make those drums loud. Make the instruments sound proud and energized: YOU ARE WITNESSING TRUE BLISS. BASK IN IT. Do all this, and REGARDLESS of the amount of content that's in the game, even if it's a one time experience for the player, leave him good memories. Make him talk up a storm. And this is how I think Star Fox can make the biggest comeback in video game history.

I agree also with him, but not only arwing fights but ground fights too (better developed as in SF Assault)

If possible an open world game so that you can discover the lylat system for once.

From a financial standpoint, I think it wouldn't be unwise to release a slightly enhanced Zero-port with tweaked controls first. That doesn't have to necessarily include more content like new levels, but at least better visuals and maybe even (Online-)VS-multiplayer.
And with tweaked controls I mean removing the motion controls, since many players disliked them and therefore adjust the gameplay to the classic scheme. The game won't become a masterpiece, but I'm confident that it would receive a better recognition and attract more players.

If we will get a new Star Fox for the Switch someday, I won't expect more than a Zero-Sequel and thus expanding on the formula. Probably with Andross returning again, since his robotic form gave the impression (at least for me) that you aren't fighting his true self.
As I have no idea how they want to introduce new planets and/or space stations (who knows, the Lylat system could be bigger than we thought after all) without raising questions, I put my hopes on several playable characters with their own missions and routes, that can intersect with those of others.

No, no different endings like in Command - imagine the first Advance Wars, where fulfilling different requirements during the playthrough lets you enter the final battle with different characters, while keeping the same ending regardless of team composition.

Bonus mission after completing the final level with a good score: A freakishly hard duel against Wolf. In fog. And no upgrades.

Not exactly a Starfox title, but how on board would we be with a Krystal or Starwolf game, or a "Starkken Tournament" (you get the point, right?)?

Ya! I think it would be really cool to have a spinoff game where you play as Wolf rather than Fox, or maybe a regular SF game where there are two story paths, one where you play as Fox, and another where you play as Wolf (Sorta like in Sonic Adventure 2 if you know what I mean). I'm not really sure what a Krystal game would look like though... Maybe Krystal could have her own mercenary squadron like Star Fox or Star Wolf?

A pre-Adventures RPG, with her as the main character. We would get to see more about her past, and would go between current time, past, and a spiritual realm. I want a game with her so bad as a compensation for all the trainwrecks. Who knows...Maybe someday.

64 handled different endings pretty well. They were similar, but the harder path offered a more golden ending. I'd like to see something like that in future games.

Indeed, even if it was basically "just" figuring out how to reach Area 6. Really wished Zero had a harder route with a more satisfying ending.

But how about adding more requirements (say, completed additional tasks during the levels), instead of solely linking the ending to the chosen path? I mean, you could add a secret third and thus "true" golden ending with that.

If there's one thing I'd like to see for a future Star Fox game, it's one that fills in plotholes and answers different questions, as well as one that offers more detailed backstories, especially for characters we know pretty much nothing about like Wolf, Leon, Pigma etc. And don't just have Fox be mute for most of the game, that kind of bothered me about Zero, especially during the one-on-one fight with Wolf.

:wolf: "Too easy..."
:fox: "..."
:wolf:"Too slow!"
:fox: "..."
:wolf:"Take this!"
:fox: "..."
:wolf:"Are you even trying?"
:fox: "..."
:wolf:"Is that the best you can do?"
:fox: "..."
:wolf:"I'm impressed! I haven't had this much fun since I fought your father!"
:fox: "..."
:wolf:"Come on!"
:fox: "..."
:wolf:"Is that the best you can do?"
:fox: "..."
