How can we improve SFO?

What things can we do to make SFO better?

SFO was once one of the largest English-language SF sites, which is something I would like to see again.

We want to make SFO the best site that we can, and we need user input.

There are certain things that we can't change, such as how fast page loads are as that is heavily dependent on our webhost.

This is more for user interface and content suggestions.

You may comment on the site, forums, anything that we haven't added yet, the interoperability of the previous items, or how the site or forums are run by the staff.

Please be constructive. Saying "The site sucks" doesn't help us.

Advertising? us popping up more on google? The main sit could be a little bigger and a way to link from the forums to the main site.

I don't know I am just throwing out idea's,

*thinks*

I can make different set of smilies, like a Slippy set, Falco set, ect. All though I still need to finish the Fox set. :D

We don't need fancy things, not even new smiles or new masks for the site, we need ...how to say this without meaning anything else.....oh well here it goes, more interesting topics, many old members are just leaving because they just lost  interest on the site because the topics, I personally haven't found anything interesting on these days to post , on  the SF areas...well, nothing  new, since there isn't a new SF game going around, in the art areas....I really dunno, I don't go there too much, but in the off topic place, arcade and random sub forums....well..."no comments", everything is kinda going around randomess and pure blahblah, we might be getting new members, but also, we are losing old ones. I just really had to say all that >_>. What I would suggest...is , make the "off topic" area a little bit bigger, I dunno, one or two new subforums; yes , yes this is a starfox forum, but like I said, we are going around circles with the SF topics, we need to at least, hold the attention of the members with other recreation areas, and not everyone like to RP or do art stuff.

I full-heartedly agree with what Steve9 said.

I once thought some events around here would get some people moving... However, with WiFi for SFC being kind of unsuccessful... I don't think we could really pull of an event in that regard...

I have noticed some of the guests that loiter around here constantly look at the art sections. I'd love to have a successful art contest, but I am not sure how many would participate.

If we had a really neat Starfox project (or some regular project) going, I really think we would have a surge of members with that.

Hopefully, we can think of something. I admit it is kind of nice to have this forum be a little quiet, only a few mishaps here and there that need to be taken care of.

It's sometimes funny for me in the randomness-areas.. I never really "laughs" and whenever I would say "lol" it's never loud....

but well that is just me.

It's usually just a few people talking here and being really active.. but they are not really "orginal SFO members" I miss how it was long time ago now... ofcourse it's better when friends are in the forums..

It needs to be a good place to hang out on.. but I don't want it to be as large as AL either...

Guess I should have gotten here earlier, to really know about how it all was... (I'm still mad that I don't finds thoose old google cache that showed the old SFO...  like my first post and Dash's art topic when it was new..)

But, it's also that I've lost intrest in StarFox (I've never really could been a fan of it anyway, cause of only really have played SF64...)

Oh, and a question about the emoticons.. when you change "pack" does it change for the whole forum for yourself, or does it just change smileys in your own posts?

Don't really know what else to say...

In my opinion, SFO is awesome (I thought it was SF-O though). Has everything a SF site should have, and has things that other SF sites don't. I have yet to see any corruption or that such I have seen elsewhere, and everyone is nice. Maybe somehow get more SF fans to join this forum, but otherwise, things are fine the way they are.

I am also losing some interest in Star Fox and more in Sonic (my fav DA Artist draws Sonic related characters >.<), but I'll always stick with what I have until something gets me mad enough to give it all up.

The smiliey set you choose affects all smilies on the board, yours and those of others.

Would it help if we gave the site some kind of new feature, maybe something interactive?

Or what about exclusive content? I have a little project involving Star Fox 64's music that may be of interest.

That chatbox would be a cool feature to have.

But there's not really anything I can see that would need to be changed. To use a metaphor: It's like a cake. Other features would just be like candy stuck onto the cake. :friends:

I've seen by fair share of chatboxes and most of which have been horribly spammed. Not sure if you can ban people from the chatbox and the forums at the same time though.

Infinity makes a good point about the chatbox

And I think that the art contest or the "really neat Starfox project" would also be kinda cool.

Sorry, but what's a chatbox? Is it like the Shoutboxes at DA? I remember reading somewhere that they're easy to hack into though...not sure about an art contest though.

Still, I can't think of anything extra needed to be added to improve this site. I think what the series needs is a bigger fan base and more people willing to join forums.

Hmm...It's a little like that. It's....kinda like a mini chat room. But in a smaller...box thing. Yeah...someone else can probably give you a better definition than my craptacular version.

Well it's not exactly like we can go around grabbing people and shouting "JOIN A STARFOX FORUM!!!" In their faces XD

To get more members, I think the best we could do is just advertise and tell people, other than that they kinda have to come of their own accord.

Shoutbox (Chatbox) may as well be spelled S-E-C-U-R-I-T-Y-R-I-S-K. They are easy targets for javascript injection attacks. Spam bots love them. SQL Injection risks are present (losing database tables would cripple the site and/or forums). Difficult to moderate.

I've seen many sites get attacked by those defacer groups that trace back the origin of attack as a javascript injection in a comment or shoutbox.

Not worth it.

Also SF-O artists seem to really do their own thing. I have my doubts that some of them would partake in a contest here. Like I said I'm going to make sure that the Mega Krystal Fan Art topic gets updated daily, at least until I can think of some better idea.

Hmm... I was kind of hoping that that thread wouldn't become our main source of interest.

I have bothing against Krystal's character, but I don't want SFO to be "KLA Jr." either.

Yeah ditto, but there's not much else I can mainly think of at the moment. Now if Nintendo talked about throwing SF Wii together... I'd love to do and post some more stuff too, but c-o-l-l-e-g-e always gets in the way, heh.

How about just pushing for more content with the main page?

DZ, you've always had something unique to talk about when it comes to the games. Just try writing some articles, and see what happens! I think dwight has certainly supplied his end with the SFC script, that's an exclusive piece of media that should help, but there's not much literature to SFO yet (a surprising manner, considering you're blog-based now). Or, if there is new reading, it's not apparent in any way, shape or form. SFO always used to have a whole ton of links on the front page that led to all kinds of...stuff. SFO is kind of simplistic right now in that manner. I'd love to see more on the main page. But, two requests: please don't do fiction (SWHQ dominates that), and please don't try to be a media library (AL dominates that). What we really ought to see is stuff that those two giants don't already do, because then people will just go to them since they have bigger collections of said material. Instead, stick to things that are really original to SFO, like the SFC script.

That's the best I can think of.

I can write articles, but each one will take a bunch of time. Perhaps we can start topics on a specific subject and let the members supply us with information as they have knowledge. Later, we can harvest the info into articles on that subject.

As for media. I've been trying to get us unique media content. Even though our homepage is a news blog, look at the links on the right. There's stuff like music and video cutscenes. I know that DZComposer has been getting us the most complete sets of and highest quality audio. I've got all the voice acting clips from Adventures right now I can add, though not today, but soon. I'd like to hear the voice clips from SF64, which DZ can get for us. That would be some unique media content. Finally, check the homepage in an hour or two. I have some cumulative news about Star Fox to share.

Ehh, everyone already has the SF64 voices from Lylat.net

Adventures voices is a good idea though. I would suggest getting the Adventures script too, similar to what you did for SFC, if you really have the time and the desire to add more content. I like how much stuff you guys have directly from the games.

As for a chatroom, It's easy enough to create an IRC channel using a mainstream client like mIRC or vIRC. I know how to run an IRC channel, it all depends on what server you want it on. It takes all of 5 minutes to get it set up, if you know what you're doing. If SFO ever decides it would like an IRC channel, I'd be more than willing to help set it up.

Nothing^^^ DZ......Agreed, there was once a website that had somthing like a profile on every charicter in the game, and all of the ship's, though not Krys, (she wasn't a gleem in her programmer's eyes yet  ^_^), we might try adding that to our current list of articals

ps: sorry DZ, I have no right to accuse you of bas spelling, look at me, for pete sakes

ok

advertising: I do what I can (already have a fairly large and easily visible link to SFO in the tinyportal links panel on the UKL which given the nature of tinyportal and how it integrates, shows on every page of the forum and in topics as well) if I had a SFO userbar I'd put it in my sig too.

content: I'll have to talk to my staff about it, but we could compile a txt document with links to all clean starfox fanfics and fanart and post it here.

participation: well I come here as often as my busy admin scedule allows, and if we do the art and fics thing, that would involve members of my staff joining to post the links, so there'd be more members as well.

sorry for digging up an old thread, but I thought I might offer what help I can.

If you are going to make a list of fanart and fanfiction, I can take the text file and run it through a perl script I created for the Krystal Archive and turn it into HTML tables (which pagify after 500 entries automatically).

If you're going to do that, please save the text file in the following format:

Artist Name<>Title of Piece<>URL to page containing the art (not the image URL)<>Notes, Warnings, and other stuff

Also, the format for fanfictions is:

Writer<>Title<>URL Address<>Story Type<>Description<>Status<>Chapters<>Warnings/Notes

The Story Type is things like "Sci-fi/Adventure" and "Romance Action Adventure" etc

Description is a breif plot summary (without giving anything away).

Status includes things like "In Progress" "Complete" and "Abandoned"

Chapters is a number value that describes the number of chapters. If it isn't complete and the work is still in progress, say that it's the numper "+", so for example: 5+ means "currently chapters 5 and more coming"

If you want to do that, I can put it up very quickly.
