Anybody prefer SSB over SSBM?

Fully aware that many of you 10-year-olds (hyuk hyuk yeah okay okay!) will say stuff like "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO" and so forth, backup is required:

Not facts here, just opinions/thoughts:

Melee may have more stuff to offer, but to me, it feels like the controls are really loose compared to N64, which makes it tighter and more ground-in. I feel like my "focus point" is right behind my character and that they feel like they're floating around when jumping. And most attacks aren't as hard-hitting as they were in SSB64. It also tends to outright overdo the whole frantic factor. Too much going on on-screen, it's like hard to understand what exactly is going on there.

Some characters tend to get watered down. Kirby has been messed up a lot in Melee compared to N64, as many people would know. I used to be really good with Luigi in SSB, but they mangled him HARD in SSBM.

Other than that, what actually made SSB shine compared to SSBM was that there's more balance among the characters in the N64 edition. Some got too overpowered in Melee. Like Captain Falcon.

Plus, when I went through Melee's supposed "Adventure Mode", I was completely mortified. I thought it would completely focus on the side-scrolling part, but there was only one bit of that. All the rest, normal fighting. It also had quite a weak presentation, at that.

Melee may have more new characters and areas and all that, but does that necessarily mean they're ALL good for being new in there? SOME of they may be, but others aren't. Especially certain items.

Levels, too. The majority of them were too small, really. Yes, even lower than "medium". "OMG HYRULE TEMPLE"....Shut up. That one level was blatantly terrible and overrated...or should I say, overplayed. Some of the moving stages, too: some were alright, others tended to be downright frustrating. When you're stuck with one opponent, you may both involuntarily get consumed by autoscroll. Too much moving against the area can take the fun out of going for your foes, too.

Don't get me STARTED on the graphics. They look sharp yes, but is that what has a great impact on the gameplay in itself? I think not. All in all, 64 tends to shine some in the tight, distinct gameplay department. Just a simple update I felt Melee to be, being quite a sequel and all, newer things are to be EXPECTED. But not ALL of them are THAT great, really.

Hopefully, Brawl should be able to bring back the GRIP that 64 had.

Heck, both games are equally good. Brawl will be the same as well. No game is ever perfect, really.

Okay, let's hear your thoughts now.

It's my opinion that SSBM gives us much more gameplay, graphics, and interesting mechanics. The only things I really missed from the first game were:

The mini story about dolls, explaining why Nintendo characters were fighting each other.

The character-specific intros for each fight.

The more enthusiastic crowd chants.

The cool transitions after Game Set, like the paper airplane transition.

Kirby was made significantly weaker.

Other than those things, I consider SSBM better than SSB in every way.

Even though I am an only childed, and both are kind of dull when playing by your self, I would have to say Melee. Smash was okay but like Steve said it felt a little too simple and boring after playing SSBM.

Hmmmmm.....this is actually a tough choice. Because, I appriciate the simplicity and the innovation (at start of release) of SSB but, all the new characters and stages and gameplay modes of SSBM kinda make both of them at par for me.

I like the new game better. It has some cool stages such as the rotating metroid level. The game also has new characters, even though some of them have the same moves.

I like them both equally, and sadly, I don't own the N64 Smash (I want it though). I have rented it, and I do enjoy it quite a bit, as for some reason, Fox is much easier for me to handle in this than in Melee (too light). Plus I liked 'Board the Platforms' and I loved the little side story as well as the character specific intros and how the screen would always do something cool at the end of each fight. Plus each time you beat Story Mode, you would get to see this awesome artwork at the end, which I absolutely loved.

Yes, the Platforms were way better than that bloody Home Run Derby.

Yeah, Fox falls like a rock in Melee. D: Again, Melee broke the balance factor that the N64 edition had.

I prefer the joy that is SSBM. More characters, looked great, and just seemed to be more fun than the original.

Plus his attackes were stronger. The only way he could have been better was if the ^B's charge did damage like it does in Melee. Plus he dropped a bit slower, and didn't go flying as easily. =)

What, you play these games JUST for Fox?

You know, SSB actually left some better memories for me. I've played it with lots of friends long time ago in one grand 4-player bash. And its supposed "backstory moments" actually grabbed me the most, the most memorable parts to me. (By that, I mean the game intro and the 1P ending parts and the credits roll)

Melee felt like just another average game to me. Not exactly as special as the first. Also, I never got to play 4 players on it with anyone. I actually don't mind playing games by myself nowadays.

In short, SSB was actually really something to me. Melee? Ah, just average/okay.

SSBM didn't actually capture any of the prized backstory elements that SSB had that really grabbed me in the first place. Melee just didn't hold me over like that.

Er, not really. Melee introduced me to the series in fact, but I only play as Fox. But not for him. I just like the series as a whole, since (up until Brawl), it's been a pure, classic Nintendo smackdown, that's wacky as ever. Shame Sakurai's leaving HAL, though.

Oh, so you first heard of it from that game. Interesting.

Just been playing at some friend's place a little bit. After that, we were just watching 4 CPUs have at each other while listening to Kirby Air Ride music. That's more fun to us. :fox:

When we were playing, we did a team match. Us two and one other CPU vs Dr. Mario. That CPU at Level 9 and Doc at Level 1. 3-on-1! This is for taking Wario's place, MARIO!
