Major Forum Changes coming (TAKING SUGGESTIONS)

Recommended Posts

I've grown dissatisfied with the forums as of late in terms of how things are organized and some of the rules we have set.

So, We will be changing up the board order, and I plan on a complete rule rewrite.

If you have any ideas, please post them.

Of course I would take community suggestions before doing this, but here's the idea:

First, some things will be removed:

Gallery would be removed. No one uses it.

All extraneous forum themes would be removed (I would like to have a custom theme in a light and dark version).

Then, some re-organization (->= board ->->=child board):

Star Fox Online

->Rules and Announcements

->->Calendar Events

->SFO Discussion

->->SFO Archive

SFO Fan Network

->The Lounge

->->Rec Room

->The Caucus and Pulpit Pub** See Proposal after this section

->Star Fox Arts (Includes all art forms except writing)

->Star Fox Fan Fiction

->General Works (Includes All Art Forms)

Games

->General Star Fox

->Classic Star Fox

->Star Fox Cubed

->Portable Star Fox

->Wii're Star Fox (Will not be created until SF Wii Confirmation)

->General Video Games

Okay, now my proposal:

You may have noticed a new board on the list above, The Caucus and Pulpit Pub.

Firstly, I must admit that I have never been a fan of censorship, but some of the rules here promote it.

The Pub will be a board solely for Politics and Religion related posts. This board will have strict rules (including off-limits topics) that should be strictly enforced to prevent a flame fest.

Of course I will not implement this board without a consensus that it is an okay thing to do.

The reorganization looks good.  I wasn't aware that we needed a rule rewrite, but that sounds good to me too.

Debates are always good when handled respectfully.  The only issue I have is new members or current ones that debate disrespectfully.  Perhaps only the members who respectfully debate will be allowed to participate?

I'll give my vote for the new Pub.  I'm certain you guys can handle it if something gets out of control.

I like the reorginization...with one expeption.

The Pub. Bad idea. Bad, bad, bad idea. You have no clue how vicious and out-of-control this thing could get in a matter of days. Why even bother with it? Like I once said, Shigeru Miyamoto never created SF to start political debates.

Well, that's my point.

If someone gets out of line, simply ban them from participating in the Pub.  Only let members who show respect and open-mindedness participate in the discussion.  I'm fairly certain we have a good number of respectful members that would enjoy such a place for discussion.

Yes, but -not mentioning any names- some truely well-meaning people may not be able to help themselves.

Alright, it's me.

Argument on certain subjects just reels me in, and I can get carried away. I honestly don't think there's anything worth discussing publicly (more than 3 people) that we aren't already allowed to discuss in typical boards.

I vote no on the Pub.

Discussion of some of the most inflammatory issues, such as abortion, will not be permitted.

Eh, I'm neutral on the Pub, if we don't get one, oh well nothing missed. If we do get one, more power to you guys. I mean, I'm pretty sure most of us know where to draw the line, but as Dwight said, some people can't help but get carried away. I mean if it's obvious flame-bait, delete it.

I'm okay with Gallery going, I suppose.  Chiro and I are the only ones who have stuff in there, anyway.

Forum debates can become out of hand, especially when a large number of members participate.  I think debates are better done in messenger programs instead of here--I mean, most everyone here has at least one, if not most, of the programs.  It saves the forum a lot of grief that way.

If topics like that aren't allowed, what IS allowed that isn't already allowed on the other forums?

Well I would have to agree with Dwight. A good arguement is always fun to be in, only when it is done in a civil manner anyways. (a debate) Anyways, I say no on the pub because it's for my own safety. I know that I would get banned from there so fast you wouldn't even know I even posted in the first place!

Anyways, I am happy for the new arrangement but one thing that would be cool, a OPEN gallery. Not the user ones we had. It was too constricted thats why no one used it.

I vote no on the pub, because, like everyone else said, it is obvious flame-bait. People can get carried away and if too many people get insulted and leave the forum, we'll be losing more people than we are losing from no Star Fox action.

That's why I just look at fanworks and forum issues anymore. >.>

I think the forums should get a complete makeover with new software.

We just did that. What part of the software needs changing?

Well, phpbb is out and I am not paying for UBB or Vbulletin when there are good open source alternatives that do not add more to our annual costs.

If you can provide another open source system that is at least as featured as SMF, I MIGHT consider it, but it is unlikely. Moving software while retaining posts and accounts is a pain in the ass.

If you tell me what needs attention, I may be able to rectify that with mods or a new theme.
