ARWINGCOMMANDER 3987
Yeah, she really cared about Kyte, and I'm sure she wanted to help that baby Cloudrunner on Scales' galleon.
Rapidfire
Uncanny. I could have sworn I posted in this thread earlier...time to remedy that. The eagerly-anticipated Wii StarFox game...well, for one thing, I suppose the Wii rather lends itself to playing in a manner to simulate flight. At its best, StarFox is a rail-shooter, and the Wii looks fully capable of doing that nicely, provided the dev team (whoever they may be) seriously works on that element--if they don't, it'll be no different than play with the Wiimote for NiGHTS: a frantic amount of flailing the Wiimote and shouting furiously while bashing into things. At this point, I hope that the game includes a co-op mode (though screen splitting may make things slightly hectic for visually busy missions and so good luck to remedying that), and I wouldn't object to seeing the return of the tactical element of Command. StarFox 2 probably would have sold quite well had it been released, and Command, while emulating certain elements of SF 2, suffers from the inherent denigration gamers arbitrarily design to handheld games as well as the multiple endings that indicates how thoroughly shot the story has become. It is as if everyone working for Nintendo cannot look at Adventures straight in the eye and say it contributed to the franchise's legacy (see Assault's uncomfortable adhesion to the principles of SF 64, Command's total acknowledgement of over-complication with the story). Even Brawl pointedly went silent about Adventures--Falco's theme from Command was supposedly going to be used in Lylat Cruise. No Adventures tracks received so much as a hypothetical mention, though with the exception of David Wise's theme for Krystal in Adventures, I can't say that Adventures generated many memorable tunes anyway. What I'm labouring to get to, perhaps, is that after Imamura indicated to us that the story is over, we're awkwardly close to a continuity reboot. Unless things are taken in a radical direction, as they were with Command, the franchise will lose even more respect and be crippled even further. This very neatly leads to the matter of what the story ought to be. There are any number of roads to take here. They could do, say, StarFox: Legends or The Next Generation and follow the story of James/Marcus McCloud et. al. but not without the potential repercussions that come naturally of the Hideo Kojima gambit (pitch out the beloved protagonist for some other pale imitation). They could cling to the legacy of 64 and rehash that again, which I sincerely hope they don't do. Whatever the case, a few things should be noted: one, genre-crossing does not work to this franchise's advantage (the Adventures effect). Two, characters other than Fox should be explored; Command edged along this line but its scope was too limited to do justice to such a venture. Three, will the Cornerian Defence Fleet be useful for a change? Honestly, the novelty of that idea from 64 wore thin in Assault. General Pepper may as well have been ordering spineless chickens to fight the Aparoids, and that might have even yielded better defence than the rabble of the Fleet. Now if some missions have you working in conjunction with the Fleet while they're being theoretically useful, that can be fun (see Katina, Fortuna from Assault). Four, if there are on-foot missions, the control scheme has to be solid and basic. That also suggests less gun variety is needed--this is StarFox, not Halo for the Nintendo crowd. Five, this story better be written by the ghost of Oscar Wilde because, after meaningless superimposition of a linear timeline on the franchise, and the addition of a (forgive me, Dwight) superfluous, stock female character, and too many years without hearing Peppy tell me to do a barrel roll, the StarFox franchise has achieved a certain level of generating discomfort with its story premises: Lylat is in trouble, go Team StarFox! I know it sounds like nitpicking, but no other major Nintendo franchise is suffering from the unusual flaw of taking itself too seriously within actual progression of canonical years. If StarFox is going to go serious, then let it be dark along the lines of Metroid with room for Slippy to say something comedic. If not, then the least they can do is stop relying on four animals to save an entire solar system from the generic mad scientist or generic alien race. Whoo, that went on longer than I anticipated. Having high standards for a Nintendo game is potentially a one-way ticket on the express train to Utter Bloody Disappointment. However, it would seem reasonable to have a StarFox game published by Ninty where the dev team didn't feel like phoning most of it in or was completely clueless about the series. This series desperately needs to find its voice again, rather than continue to warble off-key. StarFox is far from naturally complicated to block a story around: it is about space animals blowing up stuff. With all the decent sci-fi that exists, it is hard to believe that there is no one in the games industry capable of setting this series back to rights. ARWINGCOMMANDER 3987
Well, one element I was thinking of for the series would be this: When in space, you fly around blasting everywhere as you would in a typical all-range flight mission, but this is also the case when not on any missions. You just fly around the cosmos, fly to a planet or somewhere you want to go, and when there, you can fly around and pick any mission you want on that planet. Yes, the storyline definitely needs fixing. Other than the number of character deaths, and the war-torn nature of the Lylat System, Star Fox still isn't as dark as Metroid or Zelda. Either that, or do a complete reboot of the storyline, and give everybody stronger character developments. If that were to happen, they could do stuff, like Krystal not being from some place called Cerinia, and she has a family on Corneria or Fortuna. It could be something like the story of Bucky O'Hare (Why did I even mention that sh@#?), with Andross being an evil super computer who takes control of Venom, and manipulates them into universal conquest.
