Mechs

I have always dreamed of an actual mech. Like, mechwarrior. A reversed leged vehicle with a pilot.

But one thing stands in the way.... physics....

And how to make a mech balance as good as a human, if not better....

I would use a PLC (If you dont know what it is then look it up.) of some sort. If I were building one thats what I would use. A Gyroscopic controller with a physics controller hooked up, controling air cyliners and electronic solinoids. That are hooked up to a foot with pivoting "toes". The PLC would recieve I/O signals from these controllers triggering the cylinders to fire when the GC snds the signal, and the physics controller adjust this data and creates a solution for the correction according to the mass and velocity of the vehicle, balancing out.

I dont know very much, but I do know a lot more than the average high school student. But if I were to make one, this is how I would make it.

Powered armour could be a realaity, with little other then money and hippies blocking the path, but I think big machs are going to remain as a fantasy item, the reason being there size.

Tanks are designed to be low profile to hide from stuff and avoid getting blown appart. Mechs are genrally tall and as you pointed out, not very stable. They also couldn't have armour as thick of tank without making other problems worse, and getting the shallow angles of tank armour could be a problem.

Powered suits are good. I've seen one in RL. The guy who built it claimed he made it so he could move his dead body around. I hope he was joking with that. Bubblegun Crisis style suits are a long way off, and unfortunatly we probley won't see them in our lifetime.

Yeah, the skyscraper-tall mech may look impressive, but is probably not a very good idea, even if the physics make it possible to build.

The giant monster has been destroyed!  And 53% of the city has been leveled under your gigantic metal feet.

Smart bombs and cruise missiles are far more effective than any mech.

Wonder how many cruise missiles it would take before the cost of missiles equaled the cost of a mech. I sopose if you have a monster every week for a few years, maybe then?

Of course, every evil organization has a stash of "monster miracle gro" at the ready, just in case their random monster gets into a bind and needs an advantage. :leon:

Now, i never said GIANT mech. This would be the size of a small car, used for urban combat. Like a combat suit. Able to have as much firepower as a small platoon, yet durable enough to withstand a direct RPG

Hmm, ok.  When I first heard "mech", the first thing that came to my mind was "Build up!  Super Dekaranger Robo!!" :leon: *brick'd*

They look cool, but mechs are not practical weapons. Even smaller ones. Walking robots have some serious disadvantages. That is why multi-wheeled and tracked vehicles are getting the attention.

Like for one, the mech's feet will have to be planted in a way that the weapon recoil won't knock it over before firing. Wheeled/tracked vehicles can just point-and-shoot.

They would be redundant with attack helicopters, which have the same firepower, but are faster and not restricted by terrain.

Plus, they would be too complex when there are more simple ways to accomplish the objective.

As far as buiding one for fun, good luck. The people who build bipedal robots spend most of their time making the walk, as that is not an easy task.

A small powered armour suit could have uses, even if it's just for moving stuff, but I like to think it would be great for crime fighting.
