Account Purge in process

As some of you may have noticed, our forum member count is going down, this action was taken since we have a LOT of inactive accounts, all the accounts that were created before February and have posted nothing will be deleted.  Also, accounts under 10 posts that have been inactive for about +8 months will be considered too.

so will this do anything to us Active members?

Nothing will happen, as you can see now, I'm clearing the accounts as we speak. This is only meant to clean some garbage accounts, dormant bots and stuff like that.

I think its about time for this to happen anyway, would this speed up the forum any by doing this?

Account purge done , I pretty much got rid of 415 accounts, most of them had 0 posts (Registered before February of this year. Some of them had a huge inactivity and a very low post count (less than 10 posts, and inactivity over 10 months). There are a ton of other accounts that have over 2 years of inactivity and still a low post count (less than 20), the decision to continue to purge accounts has to be taken by all the staff , so I don't think we'll need a further wipeout unless it's necessary  :panther:

I highly doubt it will have an effect on the performance of the forum. Accounts are a tiny part of the database. The speed basically depends on how the Server and the network are performing. But anyways, DZ should know more about this.

That's good!

I wonder why some people create accounts here, but then they never post.

....and they're like, never here.  :?

Some people create accounts, go mental for a few days, then disappear, probley to another forum.

Sabre is right, we still have a lot of accounts that fall into that category. Which makes me think we need a new rule to go against inactivity like this.

Well, be leaniant. What if someones PC died. In my case I was lucky to get a lend of a laptop. However, I think inactivity should be at least a month, probley more, before it's considered for deletion.

I meant years, not just months. I'm sure if someone is inactive for two year, that means he/she won't be coming back for sure

The bigger the database, the more work the db server has to do to find records. Though, MySQL is rigid enough that 400 or so small entries won't effect general site speed. However, you may notice a slight improvement in member searches. The real monsters are the post tables.

That said, we are trying bit-by-bit to lean the database in preparation for the move to SMF2.

I'm planning to do a third account purge soon, I mean, people that haven't logged for 3 years won't be logging anytime soon. I just made some clean up from accounts that were basically inactive for 4 years...talk about "taking a leave"

I say do what you have to do. Those who haven't been here in 3-4 years prolly aren't coming back. It's not like Star-Fox Online is a hard name to remember..

I'm done pretty much, most accounts that have been inactive for 3 years have been deleted, and some that have been inactive for +3 years were left cause they have a lot of posts, they get the benefit of the doubt at least.

Sorry to dredge, but I'm in a hurry (and making another topic explaining everything again will be time consuming for me right now)

I just did another account purge (wooot, after a year of being lazy about it xD). I pretty much deleted most of the bot accounts that were made on  the past year, and killed a lot of accounts that had 0 posts and seemed to be old enough. Also, I sent a reminder to those accounts that are awaiting registration.

there were bots in here?

A lot of bot accounts register almost everyday, however, the forum blocks them before they can post (99% of the time), but their accounts still remain dormant.

Just goes to show you how many people simply don't like registering in a public places such as forums.  If you're not going to post, don't register at all. its that simple, honestly..
