Star Fox 64 High Scores

I agree with GammaRay256.

It is VERY hard to master the CUS technique.

And you definitly deserve the hits.

Well, my 2419 on the old route (Coneria, Meteo, Katina... and so on) was achieved by usind charged unlocked shots.

I've posted the individual scores on the previous page, check it out, or take a look at http://www.youtube.com/badleech

what is your score, gammaray?

Nothing like a revival of the "is CUSing cheating" debate...

If there is a bug in a game that awards you with additional score, exploiting it is cheating. Even if the bug takes a little skill to exploit.

It isn't a question of whether or not you "deserve" the points. If there is a bug, then you shouldn't get those points in that situation, regardless of if you think you deserve them because, in fact, you don't deserve the points because the additional reward was unintentional.

If I exploit a bug in banking software and transfer $5,000,000 into my account, which would be incredibly difficult, do I deserve that money? No. They'd throw my ass in jail.

A very good point DZ...

Do you think the developers left "hold Z+R = no lock" in the game on purpose?  The feature wasn't documented as far as I know, so do you think it was something left over from testing?  Or is it more of an Easter Egg?

Oh bull it takes more skill. It takes about as much skill to pull off no-lock shots as it does to kill every enemy on the screen with lasers alone. =/

I can't say that I agree... take the first part of Corneria [normal mode] for example:

* With just lasers, no charged shots, you can get a maximum of 11 hits before you reach the land.  It's really easy to do, anyone who has played the game once could do it.

* With charged lasers [lock-on], you can get 16 hits, 17 if you're really lucky.  It's not that hard to do either (you might get 15 if you don't lock onto the right one in the group of 5).

* With charged unlocked shots, you can get 21 hits before you reach the land if you do everything right.  It's very difficult to do however because 1) the charged shots have to hit the water and still kill the enemy, and 2) if the enemies don't hit the ground before they're off screen, you don't get the points.  There's a reason why it sometimes takes multiple tries before you get a perfect run... it's so easy to accidentally hit the units and not the water below them.

Anyways, I'll stop now.

I agree with GammaRay, but hey, you should know, that you can get 22 hits before you reach the land ;)

we'll stop that, lets just say, everyone, who posts a highscore will say, if he used CUS or not.

Well duh it's easy to hit, those are the first enemies in the game and come at you facing the opposite way. They are supposed to give you free shots so you figure out what to do.

I am not saying that it was meant that you could not disengage the lock. It is pretty obvious that that was an intended feature. The bug I am referring to is, as I understand it, that in some situations (like hitting some parts of stages that are next to enemies), using an unlocked charged shot will add additional hits to your score beyond what is normal, IE you kill 5 enemies, but get 7 hits. In fact, you pointed out an instance of this bug yourself:

It's very difficult to do however because 1) the charged shots have to hit the water and still kill the enemy

Basically, the game assumes that if enemies are killed by splash damage, then the charge shot must have hit an enemy, and thus rewards you for killing an enemy that wasn't there.

Getting high scores with this method impresses me as much as those people who claim that they can beat Metroid in 5 minutes, but they in actuality find glitches that let them skip most of the game....

A medal is an award.

A metal is a type of element.

From the official Star Fox 64 guidebook:

022maxhits.th.jpg

(Also, picture is attached to this post [if link is broken in future])

"Route 18 also gives you the best opportunity for a high score. One of our top pilots managed to rack up this impressive score along that route."

"Venomian units destroyed: 1486"

I remember laughing really hard when I beat this score.  I wasn't very old (it was probably while the game was still popular, or a year or two after), and I thought it was so funny at the time that I beat "...one of Nintendo's top pilots"...  (And yes, that was without CUS)

So for anyone out there [including myself] who can't get those crazy scores (2500+), we can rest in the fact that we are better than or equal to Nintendo's "top pilots"

Mr.Guntz, at 1400, you just need a few more to beat Nintendo :D

A bit off-topic, but I just thought I should mention that I haven't forgotten about uploading the whole guidebook... I just haven't had the time to scan it all.

I can get a score of about +600 without cheats, with cheats on an emulator would be this picture:

I actually made that score, I had on a cheat for this though

Normal Mode on Route 18 according to Nintendo Power, my highest was 1472.

I just got back into score runs in SF64 after a hiatus too long to mention, and a friend and I battled to see who could get a higher one. I won, 1393 to 1360.

It's sad to see this argument continue when it led to nothing but chaos at aL. Comparing a CUS to a "Bug" in the game just sounds silly to me. I don't get how maximizing the bonus system for a high score is considered cheating. What kind of rule book would you follow when getting a high score in this game? If you end up replying, please list what you think should be allowed/not allowed for high scores in SF64.

When I was trying to figure out rules that would work within what was most likely considered CUSing, I defined a CUS as "a charge that is fired without locking." I ended up doing fine, but when I got to Macbeth, I noticed none of the rocks will let me fire a locked charge on them. Yet, they award me points for CUSing them. Why would that be if it's completely unintentional? I ended up with a 2133 total hits with this limitation.

I know it's futile to persuade you, but I'm compelled to throw my opinion out there too. I won't flip out like the others at aL if you disagree (likely).

I FINALLY  beat my old-school high score of 1591 yesterday, now my current high score is 1624. Oh, you bet your sweet bippy I'll be challenging myself to top that eventually, especially after seeing some of these scores, I must get higher!

Hi,

my record is somewhere about 1700 (standard mode). Route was:

Corneria > Meteo > Katina > Sector X > McBeth > Area 6 > Venom 2

In expert mode I can't manage to get more, because I loose my twin lasers all the time^^
