What is your favorite mission/level from Star Fox 64?  Vote for your favorite, then, if you want to, post a list of them from favorite to least-favorite:

1) Katina

2) Corneria

3) Venom I

4) Area 6

5) Sector X

6) Zoness

7) Macbeth

8 ) Venom II

9) Meteo

10) Titania

11) Bolse

12) Sector Z

13) Solar

14) Warp I

15) Sector Y

16) Fortuna

17) Warp II

18) Aquas

* It was hard to decide, but I think Katina is my favorite mainly because there are lots of enemies and lots of opportunities to show off all-range mode skills.  Plus, it's based on "Independence Day" which is one of my favorite movies.

* Corneria is also fun because I can now get 252 hits on normal mode, but I'm also a bit tired of it.

* Venom I is cool also... for the first 30 seconds.

* I like Area 6 because of the potential for 511+ scores.

* I like the boss on Sector X.

* I like Zoness because I rarely play it (it's not on my high score route, and I have to go through Aquas and Sector Y to get to it  ).  The boss is also awesome because the only way to hurt it is with Smart Bombs.

* Aquas is at the end of the list   I don't like it because it's slow-paced, and you can't shoot or move very fast in the Blue Marine.  The torpedoes are little more than glorified charged laser blasts.

Sector Y, I think. Realistic situation, lots going on, and at the end, you fight giant robots.

Probably either Macbeth, or Area 6, because you can cause absolute MAYHEM in both levels.

Besides, I think Area 6 is a true test of a Star Fox gamer's mettle. Especially the Expert Mode version.

I always wished I could fly an Arwing through Macbeth... now that would be mayhem!

I was just recently able to get 511+ hits on Area 6 in normal mode.  I could survive the level in expert, but I'd probably only get 400 hits or so because I'd be trying not to lose a wing the whole time :)

EDIT: I just played through Area 6 in expert, I got 508 hits, but it was difficult because I couldn't fly through certain obstacles.

I somehow managed to get through the whole level without losing a wing though :)

I think the hardest level in expert mode is Venom I.

As a level in Star Fox 64, Sector Y isn't my favorite.  BUT, it's one of my favorite places in the Star Fox universe because of it's mysterious setting, a ship graveyard surrounding a radiation cloud formed from the meltdown of a failed Bolse satellite.

I think your thinking of Sector Z, that's the space graveyard, and I don't remember hearing anything about a failed Bolse satellite. Check the main site's local backup of the SF64 site.

"It is thought by some scientists that Sector Y is the result of a failed Bolse satellite that underwent nuclear meltdown, polluting the sector with the radioactive fallout."

"During the course of the Lylat Wars, the main Cornerian battle fleet engaged in a desperate melee with Venomian forces at Sector Y. The fleet took heavy losses when Andross' latest invention, large humanoid battle suits, were employed en mass to devastating effect."

http://starfox.wikia.com/wiki/Sector_Y

It's too bad I don't know where my Star Fox 64 player's guide is, but I remember reading the same information in there.

Sector Z is a graveyard because it contains wreckage from an "earlier battle".  But Sector Y includes quite a bit of wreckage as well.  Both sites contain remnants of previous battles, although it looks like Sector Y's wreckage is more recent.  Still, Sector Y has more surprises and weird stuff than Sector Z, it's also significantly darker.  Sector X also includes a base destroyed by the Spyborg.  So all three nebulas are graveyards, although Sector Z is the oldest.

Dang, I gotta get my hands on that Strategy Guide, then I would have them all! I hear its a goldmine of information on Star Fox! Does anyone here have it, with the info from it we could probably start our own wiki, I heard Mr. K and DZ talking about that once.

Area 6

Flying, Assistance from the Great Fox, Space Battles, interaction between comm channels of both allies and enemies (Caiman, and that General), communication with Andross, fighting the Gorgas Satellite....yeah!

Fortuna also seems cool 'cause you get to fight Star Wolf for the first time, although fighting them on the surface of Venom in the mission, Venom II, with their all new "Wolfen II" fighters, which are awesome!

And of course, as mentioned before, Katina, for that awesome air battle, reminiscent of "Independence Day!"

I just ordered another guide from eBay.  When I get it, if I can get access to a scanner, I'll upload scans of all the pages.

EDIT: It looks like my scanner still works, so I should be able scan it when it arrives!

UPDATE: I got the guidebook, but it will take some time to scan.  I'll make a thread for everyone to download the scans when they're finished.

We have a wiki. No, it's not publicly editable, nor will it be. We'll probably allow people to submit changes, but they will need to be approved. Thing is, this wiki will have absolutely nothing in it not backed up by official sources. As a result, yes, we will need those guides. I have most of them myself, but we will need more and different info later on.

I vote Zoness because it's so nice, I always feel like I'm there whenever I play it. It's a fun level and the boss is so good to play. I get a laugh out of it. :P

For me, Katina just narrowly edges out Area 6 by virtue of being an actual dogfight. I'd stay on that planet all day if they didn't impose the time limit.

After Area 6, honourable mentions go to Macbeth (the best Landmaster battle), Sector Y (Gundam!), and Sector Z (there's something innately awesome about trying to survive giant missiles of doom).

  • 5 weeks later...

Fav mission for me, probably Corneria. Its the first level that shows off SF64 and it has good music too.

My next fav would be Venom 2. That is what a Star Wolf battle should be.

Venom 1. The music is awesome, it's fun to get high scores on, and the challenge is waaaay off the charts (in expert mode) compared to every other level in the game.

Least favorite goes to katina because it's the most frustrating planet to get high scores on, and i've developed a deep, deep hatred of it for that reason over the years.

Yes, Venom I is very challenging in expert mode.  Way harder than Venom II or Area 6.  It's also somewhat difficult, but not impossible, to get 200+ hits on Venom I.

Least favorite goes to katina because it's the most frustrating planet to get high scores on, and i've developed a deep, deep hatred of it for that reason over the years.

You're right about how frustrating it is to get high scores... I can't figure out why sometimes I can get 220, and other times, can barely get 200...

Also, I can't figure out why, if I shoot three of the hatches, the fourth one only *sometimes* appears after the countdown begins.  Other times, it's not there, and I lose a HIT+5.

I still like it though because it's actually a dogfight AND it makes you really good at charged shots.

Charge unlocked shots take real skill to be used effectively on Katina.

... I have my best score on the charts there :P

Agree.

My favorite level is Sector X, I think...  I always liked it, and I play it very often.

Besides SX, it would be Venom 1 or Meteo...

I like area 6 but it is hard to get really good scores there, if you played to long the pal version :D

Are you referring to the difference in frame rate between the NTSC and PAL versions?  Do five frames per second really make that much difference?

No, I am referring to the 511-limit on the pal version.

On the Pal version, you cannot get more than 511 hits on a level, because there is a limit. Getting 511+ hits is only possible on meteo and area 6, and on meteo it is very difficult, on A6 it is quite easy if you are good at the game.

So if you only play the pal version, you play area 6 not really good, especially in the second half (which is actually the harder one), because you know you will get the 511+ with a 280+ checkpoint.

And if you then finally get a NTSC version, where this limit doesn't exist, you have problems to get scores of 600+, because you never really tried to do good at the second half, since it was never necessary^^

... at least I have these problems^^

yeah, the framerate difference doesn't really matter anymore because the n64 passport plus module can run the ntsc game at 50hz like pal. the main problem is the limit like badleech said. it makes you lazy ^^

I see.

Don't some of the NTSC versions have the 511 limit too?

I always thought it was NTSC "Player's Choice" cartridges that had the limit while the few non-"Player's Choice" cartridges did not have it.

As far as ROMs go, I think the 1.1 versions have the 511 limit, and the 1.0 versions do not.

I'm assuming the 1.1 versions are Player's Choice, so that would explain why the copies without the 511 limit are so rare.

I'm pretty sure I have an NTSC cartridge, (aren't all US copies NTSC?), and it still has the limit.

Something that has always ticked me off is that Katina is ALWAYS misspelled by people. Its K A T I N A. Not Katarina. Not Kitana. KATINA!!!
