SFOCast Theater: Podcast drama, anyone?

Recommended Posts

I've been mulling over this idea for over a year, and I think it is time to get serious about it. I want to revive SFOCast as a Podcast (AKA "Radio") drama.

The only obstacle I really have in this idea is that I cannot do it alone. I will need:

- Voice Actors

- Someone to help me with the story (stories?)

- Help promoting it on other sites

- Anything else you feel you can help with

If this project is a success, It could bring people into SFO.

Current Story Idea (VERY abridged):

Over the past couple of years, I've formulated a story, originally to be a fanfic trilogy, that involves a two-front war with multiple planet killers posing serious threat: the Gorgon-class artillery gunships. It also tests Fox's emotions, as events push him to the brink of sanity. Takes place after SFAs.

What is a Gorgon? Think SF64 Area 6 boss.

In this story, a total of four were built: Gorgon, Medusa, Stheno, and Euryale. The names Medusa, Stheno, and Euryale come from the gorgons of Greek Mythology (how fitting ;) ), but the Gorgons in this story are stewards of Planet Cannons, which can blow-up planets or annihilate fleets instead of turn people into statues.

If you've played SF64, you know what happened to Gorgon ;) . Medusa, Stheno, and Euryale were hidden at the end of SF64 (called the 'Venom War' in the story).

Of course you have the Cornerians.

Then you have the Oikonny empire, led by Andrew Oikonny.

You also have the New Venom Empire (NVE), led by former Venomian Imperial Guard General Scott Latrans (He's a Coyote. His last name comes from the scientific name of the species Canis Latrans). This is the faction that is obsessed with destroying planets.

Basically, Oikonny finds the first one on Titania, and it is stolen by the NVE. This theft is the catalyst for a three-party war. The Cornerians and Oikonny go to war, and the NVE joins in when a Cornerian patrol finds their base.

The NVE catches Corneria off guard and quickly becomes a bigger thread than Oikonny, due to the Gorgon, which the NVE users to incinerate Corneria's fleets.

As the Gorgon bears-down on Corneria, Fox remebers how he destroyed the one at Area 6. Though this battle is tougher, as the Gorgon is not being used to directly attack them, and is well-defended by the NVE fleet.

The NVE turtles on MacBeth. Oikonny intensifies his war effort.

Fox Discovers that Krystal now flies with Star Wolf (who works for the NVE), and it devastates him. Star Wolf gains a rare victory over Star Fox as a result.

NVE scouts find the second Gorgon on Sauria. Oikonny finds out and tries to steal it. The NVE fends him off, and then eradicates his army on Fortuna and Fichina. It is no-longer a two-front war.

The NVE spreads destruction on Sauria as they build a Gorgon base there. This angers Krystal, who leaves Star Wolf over it. Fox and Krystal meet at the walled city: Krystal was making plans to sabotage the Gorgon. Fox was sent there by Corneria to find out what the NVE was doing there. They agree to help eachother, but Krystal wants nothing to do with Fox afterwards.

Fox tells Krystal he is keeping a promise he made to her long ago, and gives her a folder from Cornerian Intelligence. She slaps him and forces him away afterwards. She first throws the folder in the garbage, but later opens it and reads the contents. The folder contains copies of old Venomian weapons test documents regarding the Planet Canon. One test, Test Gamma, is a full power test designed to test the planet-killer capabilities of the Planet Canon. The Target: Cerinia by order of Andross himself. Krystal leaves in tears and disappears again.

After a few skirmishes, Great Fox finds itself in the cross-hairs of the Gorgon from Sauria. To Fox's horror, the technique of destroying the rotating energy balls during the Planet Canon charge sequence no longer cripples the Gorgon's shields (a design flaw that was corrected during the Venom War). Though they are able to slow the charging, and Great Fox is able to get out of range. The Gorgon is destroyed in the chase.

The Cornerians discover the location of the final Gorgon on Aquas, but NVE spies alert Latrans. The NVE gets to it first. The Gorgon is moved to Macbeth for extensive repairs due to water leaking into the supposedly sealed container the ship was hidden in.

More skirmishes.... Fox meets Krystal again, and she re-joins Star Fox.

The final battle: Latrans sends the Gorgon to Corneria. Fox discovers that this Gorgon also has been fixed. Nothing the Cornerians have can penetrate the shield. Fox and Co. manage to get aboard the Gorgon. Their plan: Destroy it from the inside. The plan falls apart, Slippy, Falco, and Krystal are captured. The story ends shortly after with the Gorgon being cut up for scrap by the Cornerians.

Cast (NOT CASTING RIGHT NOW. THERE WILL BE A CASTING THREAD IF THIS PROJECT MOVES FORWARD):

Major Cast:

Narrator

Fox McCloud

Peppy Hare (Becomes CDF Commander in Chief during story)

Falco Lombardi

Slippy Toad

ROB64

General Lupus (Interim CDF CNC after General Pepper's retirement, advises Peppy after Peppy is picked as permanent CNC)

Andrew Oikonny

General Latrans (NVE Supreme Leader)

Wolf O'Donnell

Leon Powalski

Panther Caruso

Krystal (She is absent most episodes, but mentioned by Fox more often [The story isn't about her, it's about Fox])

There will be minor characters who appear throughout the series, though each is only in like one or two episodes. They will be casted as needed.

The story is open to change, hell if you think you have a better one it can be replaced completely.

I'm thinking each episode will be around 30 minutes or so. Maybe an hour if there is enough material. It will be a monthly show (sorry, I don't have the time to make it a weekly one).

If it becomes a huge success, more stories may be done.

Sorry Thunderstar, but I don't think that would work for this kind of thing.

I've been all for this kind of project since you first thought of it months ago. I like the story, it sounds very good. I've always found the Gorgon to be a cool enemy.

The list isn't final. I imagine there will be some Female parts by the time I have everything nailed-down.

Also, I have most of the major events in this story solidified, so most of the story help I will need is mainly with dialog and making sure it makes sense dramatically.

DZ, I've said it before, for a project this ambitious, you need to just go ahead and start doing it. Just do the narrator parts, if necessary, and add the other characters in post, or whatever. It doesn't matter the script. It will start out bad, but will improve over time. The main goal is for you to get something tangible together first. Then we can talk about making it better.

An ambitious project. I'm not sure if I should try out for any more voice-acting jobs now, I'll consider it.

Anyway, best of luck!

This week, I am going to start the script for the pilot episode. I will post the script for comment and casting when it is done. Note that I do not plan on doing that for every episode, just the first couple.

I may redact some actions (there has to be something to listen for ;) ) from later ones, though I will post the complete script for the pilot.

I've got a tiny question: If the project get green light, how will the voice material for each episode be recorded? Will the actors get their lines trough PM or E-mail, so they can practice, record and send the sound files back for editing?

A special board will be created for it that only people who are working on the project can see. Entire script would be posted there.

About the pilot, it will not be part of the Gorgon story. I will create a shorter story for it. That way you don't get left hanging if the project doesn't go farther than pilot.

Although I am writing a story for it, if you have a short fic you would like to suggest for this, please do. Keep in mind: It must be yours, and you grant me permission to modify it to fit the format.

If you still need or want any assistance in terms of the actual dialogue scripting and such, I am more than willing to offer my abilities to this project, DZ.

I'll lend my voice talents if you would like.

If you would allow it, I would like a voice roll as a character, but I'm thinking I want to take a crack at being the narrator. Anytime I see a chance to voice act, I will jump for it so I can improve my skills.

Great to see the voice interest. Work on the pilot script has stalled. I'm having difficulty coming up with a story for it, so I will instead just jump into the gorgon story.

Well, I've decided that I'll offer my voice for this project. I've got a very dark and gruffy voice, the only main character I can pull of is Wolf. Though I may also be ablo to voice extras, evil henchmen seems to suit my voice well.

I can pull off a few accents for voice (if needed) and I want to help in any way I can. ^.^

I had absolutely nothing to do at work today, so I made some good progress on the episode one script.

Only problem with this story is it needs some intro, so the first episode will not have a lot of action early on. But if I stick to an hour-long format, I can get to some.

Rapidfire is also writing a script for an episode as well.

Looks good so far, but then, I wouldn't expect anything else either.
