There are at least four family friendly movies on that list. Families probably go to movies less because it runs them at least $50 including tickets and food. That being said, kids movies are usually box office successes.

I have a bit of Star Wars news. Disney confirms a series of stand-alone movies such as the Boba Fett, Han Solo and Lobot side-stories will be out in between chapters of the new trilogy. Just kidding...about the Lobot thing, the rest is true.

This can open new doors for film making. Imagine films of the Jedi Knight series or Knights of the Old Republic.

   Can't wait...to be disappointed...again.

I'm pretty hopeful about the new trilogy.  Abrams did a fine job with Trek 2009, I can only expect the same come episode 7.

The irony of this is that I got excited when you said Lobot. I could see them pulling off a drama about his history and the conflict that comes from his loss of humanity.

Otherwise here's hoping the movies aren't Let's Spell with Han Solo and Boba Fett shares with Mickey Mouse.

Let me just step-in and remind people not to make generalizations if you can avoid it.

Carry on.

The movie "From Up On Poppy Hill" came out in theaters recently, which I want to see, and I'm also excited about the movie Wolf Children, which I'm still waiting to be released in English in America. It shouldn't be too much longer.

So I actually went to the theater with my date (who wanted to see Life of Pi). Fair enough, should be interesting, as some people say it was great, and others say it was overrated. Of course, guess what? The projector overheated....what luck.

In any case, one of the managers allowed us to see another film and we settled for "The Incredible Burt Wonderstone" because

A: its a comedy (which we both like)

and B: It was convenient to watch it according to the showtime.

So here's a small review (at leas in terms of the genre in respect to the movie). But first, note of course that the movie is PG-13 (I will mention this later for an important reason).

The movie had its incredibly humorous moments and then had long, LONG periods of time where you would almost forget you were watching a comedy because the producers tried to progress the story in a serious fashion. While there needs to be plot progression in order for the movie to come together, at times it felt like certain scenes could have been removed, or at least shortened a bit to make way for the comedic portions, most of which would unfortunately be characterized as slapstick comedy.

Unfortunately, all the time that is spent progressing the story is not used well enough for character development. There is one glaring bit of information (that is repeated over and over again) that could have been used to enhance the story by playing off of and develop Burt Wonderstone's (Steve Carrell's character) relationship with one of the minor characters. (I would love to explain it further, but I would be spoiling some of the main plot points) Believe me, if you watch the movie, you will understand exactly what I am talking about.

As for the acting, Steve Carrell's performance was not as great as other previous movies he has been in, granted he still did a pretty good job. Steve Buscemi was more of a mixed bag, as he would transition from being the best actor in the film, to simply forgettable. If it wasn't for an entire portion of the script used to develop "Anton" (Buscemi's character), he would probably be considered a major character playing a minor role in the film.

Jim Carrey (his character is Steve Grey), was clearly the most committed actor to the film. As usual, he put everything he had into his character, who is borderline insane, once again making me wonder if he really is crazy. Of course, the crazy-ness of the comedic points in the film (That I would rather not describe in detail....more of a shock factor thing going on here) gives me more than enough reason to wonder which moron rated the film PG-13. Could it be that the unrealistic scenarios are considered outrageous enough to brush off as a simple joke? I don't want to describe what goes on in the film to avoid spoilers, and quite frankly, I don't think it is safe for most on both a maturity level and psychological standpoint in certain instances. Personally, I would have rated this as an R rated movie.

To finish this off, I'll just say you can watch this film because the PG-13 rating allows you to, but you've been warned. As for the plot, it could have used more polishing. Some things felt rushed, while other times they should have just cut to the chase. From a comedic standpoint, it gives you that feeling that the funniest parts were shown in the previews in TV commercials and whatnot.

Overall (from 1-10 [with 5 being average]) I give this film 4 out of 10. In other words, slightly below average, and if comedies aren't your favorite genre, passable.

@Snes: Funny, I was actually named after a character from The Legends of the Fall in real life.

Really?

-

Don't ask why, but I had a bout of insomnia last night and decided to watch Iron Sky on Netflix. Even in my drunken, beered up state this movie was absolute garbage. I'll elaborate on this movie in case no one has heard of it.

Knowing they are doomed, the remnant of Hitler's Third Reich flee to the darkside of the moon in hopes of returning and reestablishing the Nazi order on earth. Over 50 years later they reemerge and find the world run by idiots. This film isn't just terrible, its just...well, stupid. I mean, Sarah Palin the President of the United States?

The movie was written as a dark comedy and should have been a documentary on what happens when sh*t makes it the silver screen.

Here is the underlining factor; they tried to make this funny. They even try to do their version of the "Hitler gets mad" meme. The actors are the worst I've seen since Micheal Bay's bullsh*tted version of Transformers. You know what I think was funny? That the people who made this pig slop thought it was entertaining, but its not. I'd rather chew on a rusty nail then watch this again. Its boring, uneventful, chicken scat and I do not recommend this to anyone.

I give it a poo out of 10, cause I'm all out of f*cks.

In case you'er wondering if Nazis could ever be considered as funny, I suggest the CBS TV series Hogan's Heroes. Why? Cause its funny. Iron Sky, not even close.

Yep! As of right now though, I shouldn't say what my name is. Just know that it was from a character from that movie.

Okay so I've been blowing through movies while I work all week and these are the ones that I've taken a look at:

From Hell: Based on the Alan Moore graphic novel, this is a movie about inspector Abberline (Johnny Depp) trying to stop Jack the Ripper and also he's psychic for some reason. It was a pretty decent-looking movie and the overbearing tension was great, and though the plot got into pretty wtf-territory it was still entertaining. Unfortunately I didn't like the characters too much, but eh. Give it a watch if you like Victorian crime drama with conspiracy theories thrown in!

Wreck-It Ralph AH. This movie was SO CUTE. Finally, a game movie made by people who actually seem to know shit about games AND who have the ability to convey it in a pleasant, adorable and entertaining way! It felt like a lost Pixar movie and damn was it heartfelt indeed, looking gorgeous and with a host of entertaining, sweet characters. I saw where the plot was going pretty early-on but I wanted it to go in that direction and it was overall pretty fulfilling.

Cars 2: WHAT IN THE ABSOLUTE FUCK. "Watch all the Pixar movies," I said, "It's your duty," I said. Well, I did it kids. I watched Cars-fucking-2. That, or someone spiked my coffee with OD-levels of acid because that is honestly the only other explanation for this fucking movie. How is it that someone looked at the original Cars--one of Pixar's most small-scale, character-driven movies--and think "you know what this needs? INTERNATIONAL ESPIONAGE"? Someone is fucking TORTURE-MURDERED IN THIS MOVIE and no one blinks an eye. Yes, that's right: BRUTAL CAR TORTURE-MURDER. Cars faking their own deaths. Terrorist attacks. THE QUEEN. What...what the fuck? Why?! WHY WAS THIS NECESSARY?! I'd be angry if it weren't for the fact that I'm just confused. This is just bizarre. The only excuse for this is that some exec said, "look, we're being forced to make a Cars sequel to sell billions in toys so we can have even more money to make movies that are actually good, so whatever, go crazy with it" and then they did because that's the only way they could reconcile the fact that they were making a fucking Cars sequel. GOD. DAMN.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows: Look, I love the Ritchieverse Sherlock Holmes movies, okay? While I liked the first one more, this one was still good, and though I feel like the action kind of took over and Jared Harris was a dull Moriarty, it was still really fun. I wrote a few more details on my blog and don't feel like copypasting but there you go.

So...what am I watching next?

Imaginaerum.

Oh, yes. It's the fucking Nightwish movie. Prepare yourselves, SFO.

Then I guess you haven't heard that the creators of Cars and Cars 2 are coming out with a new one...

Planes is technically Disney, not Pixar. Granted, the both of them always felt more Disney than Pixar in that neither were really up to the same standards usually expected from Pixar...I really hope Monsters University will blow me away because Brave was disappointing and Cars 2 was just a weird, soulless mindfuck.

Aaaand I watched Imaginaerum

It

wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be. I'm going to do a video review but I actually would recommend seeing it if you like dark fantasy, you don't need to be a Nightwish fan to understand or enjoy it and the band doesn't actually dominate the scene like a glorified music video, as I was expecting it to be.

Not sure if want...

On the one hand, Nightwish driven dark fantasy, on the other hand...

Oh yeah, forgot to mention I saw Wreck It Ralph and Hotel Transylvania recently. I can say I thoroughly enjoyed both movies.

I'm sure y'all have seen/heard enough about the former that I'll just say it's an awesome movie. And for the latter, it's really an underrated movie. From what I've seen, it seems people were expecting some beyond amazing, entirely original plot that would get it nominated for every award a movie can possibly be nominated for. It's a family movie. It's not the deepest of plots and the subtlest of humour. However, story wise, it actually had it's moments of "Did not see that coming." It was a tad less predictable than most other family movies. But it gave me some good laughs. Loved the zombies in it for some reason, but since I couldn't find my favourite scene, I will show you this one, which is also good.

Also, didn't know you could get so many jokes out of the invisible man as they accomplished in this movie.

In short, the story is good, the humour is pretty damned good, I'll say the casting was great (never would of thought Adam Sandler would of been a good voice for Dracula but I will admit he did a damned fine job), and if you can find enjoyment in a family movie, do not pass this one up. It gets my seal of approval.

Oh yeah, and the animators in charge of Dracula and Mavis' bat designs needs a pay raise, because never have my eyes seen more adorable animated bats.

Like I said, the band isn't actually in a lot of it, but even the parts they are there for they apparently learned to write music that she sounds good singing, so she didn't sound like the square peg led to the round hole left by Tarja's influence in their sound. As far as the band members go, it's worth it just to see Marco. He absolutely blew me away and I almost wish he was in more of it.

edit: Just watched The Lorax. I have no opinion of this movie either way somehow.

I saw Star Trek Into Darkness. While I don't understand the title at all, it was fairly a decent film despite the opinions of hardcore trekkies still bitching about the alternate reality thing. I enjoyed the film not just as a sequel to the 2009 film, but as just a movie and awakened my desire to see the next Star Wars trilogy. I like what J.J. Abrams has done with the franchise and I look forward to the third installment and what it has in store.

I thought we had a thread on movies we recommend but I can't find it anymore. So if that's still in use then delete it because this one is better.

ANYHOW.

This is going to be the new place to talk about movies that are new that you (The Users) recommend.

Allow me to start.

I just saw Gravity... and I'm honestly speechless.

Yes this movie was mainly focused on the effects of weightlessness and the fancy CGI, but in the midst of all this there was in fact a simplistic story line. Small but one of the most touching I've ever witnessed. I never though George Clooney could have made me tear up.

Out of five I give it a 4.81.

Is this based on a */5 ranking?  Or a */10 rank?  I am guessing it is out of 5...

Anyways, could you be more specific?  I believe you need to give a score that extends out to the thousands place in order to give an accurate rating.  :troll:

I recommend Fantasy Mission Force.. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fantasy_Mission_Force

And give it a -10/10. Because its so bad its great !

This movie has for main selling value of featuring Jackie Chan beating up people ! And that last about 10 minutes of the whole movie !

The rest is just pure, hilarious, nonsense..

Just go on youtube and type "[1982]Fantasy Mission Force".

I'm not gonna link it, even though I hardly think anybody will want to threaten and harass people over that thing..

My favorite part is the part with the "nazi, roman, samurai, leather wearing doods, spining road flares with their arms, while riding 60's muscle cars" come in out of nowhere. The scene just goes on for like 10 minutes, and its strictly just them stacking up in front of the protagonists .. ( just append the following without quotes after the video's address in the address bar of the browser: "?t=1h7m1s", that's one of the highlights in WTF-isism of this movie ! )

Its just, wow ! XD

If you've got an hour or two to waste out of boredom, and are in the mood for laughing at some hilariously bad writing and acting, even for a comedy, just watch this so you can say: nevermore !
