The SMF 2 RC2 Fix-it thread

Well, SMF violated a big rule of release candidates: Don't make hugenormous feature or back-end changes between RC releases.

I ran the update thinking this would be a minor one. I was wrong.

The end result? Well, a lot of our stuff is currently broken. I have to wait for mods to get re-written (ReCAPTCHA being one of them, I hope the spam bots stay away...).

Sargasso is ruined. After looking at things, I think it would be easier to start-over and make a new custom theme. It would be about the same amount of work. We're talking many man-hours, so, unfortunately, we'll have to have Curve, SMF's new default theme, as our forum theme for a few weeks while I crank-out a new theme. The theme authors haven't got much out for RC2 yet, so I don't have a nice starting point yet. We'll see. I may end up modding Curve.

If you find anything broken, please post it here and I'll add it to the fix list.

Request to Mr. K: Could you please send me your CSS for the main site? I want to try to make the forums look as similar to it as possible, and I could get something out faster if I knew exactly how you did things instead of having to trial-and-error the look.

I wonder if the SMF people know anything about software engineering, this really breaks a lot of IT standards. For what I can understand, they simply threw the update without making any kind of beta testing, or without considering the end user client.

Oh well, let's hope this gets fixed soon.

When I came on, I really went "WTF?"

Here is what it looked like when I logged on during the update.

Only thing I care about is that the site's back up.  If it's more referring to technical issues, that's fine; just try and do your best at fixing the issue(s).

*A black and white 1950's test pattern with an Indian's face and war bonnet appears, with the words "TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES.  PLEASE STAND BY." appears*

Sorry, was out of town yesterday evening (why I said I didn't have hours to work on it).

This afternoon, I will work on getting something done.

I noticed that BlackRain (the theme we used prior to Sargasso) was ported to RC2. I will probably throw that back up on the forums later as a temporary solution.

To address some earlier comments, there is nothing wrong with our data. The database is fine, and plus I made a backup of it beforehand in case something did happen. It's just the theme that is messed-up for now, and some of the mods we use are not updated for RC2 yet. I kind of panicked yesterday because I didn't have time to work on it. After cooling down, I realized it is just minor stuff. We only permanently lost a theme, that's it. It sucks that I have to make a new one, but nothing valuable is lost, as far as I can tell.

Just calm down, I will get things fixed as soon as I can.

Still though, DZ, contact me. I'm now online via chat and I can help you understand the site and how it works.

Mods are now working again, including RECAPTCHA.

New "Sector X" theme under development. And, with many many thanks to Mr. K, is progressing nicely.
