My Starfox project

Showtime 1-1

Recommended Posts

Ok guys, I've got an idea, and I have some time to do it.

I have a combat flight sim, and one of the features is, of course, wingmen in your flight who talk and reply to commands, as well as other air traffic on the radio. I had a thought that it would be funny to replace some of these simple phrases with quotes from Starfox 64. Then I looked over the file structure and realized that I could, without too much trouble, effectively make my wingmen (and some other airborne traffic) Falco, Peppy and Slippy.

I've already extracted and decoded the voice clips from my sim, and I'm working on arranging and finding matches for most of the phrases. It's going to be slow work, but I'm sure I can get it done.

basically, I will take a phrase such as "Somebody get him off me!" and replace the audio file with Slippy saying "FOXXX!", "Whoa, Help me!" or "Fox! Get this guy off me!". Each of the three AI voices in the sim has 3 different ways of saying most of the phrases, so I will just replace where I can. Any calls that are played a lot but aren't really useful (like "I'm out of ammo" or "approaching target- 5 minutes"), I will replace with a memorable quote, such as "Can't let you dooo that, Starfox!", "Do a barrel roll!" or anything else of that caliber.

The only problem I have is that the game uses .WAV (wave) files for the speech, and the quotes as available to me are in MP3 format, on the main site here. That means I'll either have to try and find a way to make the sim recognize and use MP3s or find a way to convert the MP3s on the site here to .WAV files once on my comp. If anybody could help me with that, It would be much appreciated.

I'll try to update my progress as I go. If I manage to solve the compatability problem, I might have this done before the new year.

Just do a google search for: wav mp3 converter free

And you should get up a whopping great list of programs to help you out.

The idea sounds awesome, and I hope you can find time to record a quick video of it and post it on youtube for our viewing pleassure.

I use winLAME for all my MP3 and OGG encoding and decoding:

http://winlame.sourceforge.net/

You can even cue up a batch and do them all at once!

It can also do WMA. If you download the libraries for them, it can also do AAC and FLAC.

Free-as-in-speech software (open source)!

I'll try to post some before/after videos. Having some trouble with gamecam, though... can't get it to record bunk.

@DZ, I'll take a look at that. Thanks. I never seem to have any luck with Google searches for those programs anyway.

Ok, things are well on their way, thanks to caat01 and DZcomposer. I'm 1/3 of the way through finding matches for most of the phrases, then it's on to downloading and converting those quotes from SF-O into WAV files, which I can now do. Then it's a matter of re-coding the voice clips, and it's set. ETA variable.

Unfortunately, Gamecam will not record audio on windows 7. I'll have to wait until somebody figures it out and posts a how-to on the Gamecam site. That being said, I WILL find a way to record some footage once I'm done, even if it means just taking a video of the screen.

  • 1 month later...

BUMP!

I sorta forgot about this, it's been almost a month since I finished it and put it up on the interwebs. Anyways, it is finished, and it is epic. There's nothing better then turning to merge with a bunch of MiGs and hearing "You can't beat me! I've got a better ship!". And hearing slippy say "Fox! I've got enemies on my tail!" brings back such fond memories...

Anyways, despite the fact that none of you will be able to use this unless you spring $20 for a Thirdwire SF2 combat sim, I'll put up a link anyways. I'm working on making a video to demonstrate (and show off my L337 flight sim skillz :P), but I'm having problems with Gamecam, so that's on hold for now. Just thought I'd close my flight plan here, lest you all think I'm all talk and no action!

YES. I STRONGLY recommend the Thirdwire sims with every fiber of my being. I've played dozens of combat flight sims from Jane's ATF and Fleet Defender to LOMAC and BlackShark, and I have to say that the Thirdwire series 2 sims have the best balance of realism and fun, an infinite RPV, and an immense online community (combatace) providing mods and upgrades and support. I've been playing it since 2003 and I've never gotten tired of it.

I'm afraid screenshots wouldn't be much good, because as the mod stands it's audio-only, and I don't plan on going through all the work to change the captions. I'm woking on trying to find a person who can record a short video for me, or I'll just set up my video camera to record the screen.

Nope, It's Strike Fighters 2 Vietnam/Europe (combined install). It's pretty realistic in the way that if you're out of ammo, you're screwed, and you never know exactly where the enemies are until you have a radar lock (which isn't easy) or have them in sight.

All the voice stuff is along the lines of "One, Two's airborne", "Bandits", "SAM Inbound!", "You got one on your tail!" and "I can't shake him!", replaced with things like (respectively)  :slippy:"Don't worry, Slippy's here!",  :wolf:"Can't let you do that, Starfox!",  :peppy:"Do a barrel roll!",  :peppy:"Enemies approaching from the rear! Drop altitude!" and  :falco:"I could use a little help here, Fox!"

I'm seriously bummed that I can't get a video. What a pain.

You seem to be doing a good job.

Do not let the fact that you can not get a video upset you,

like I said, (at least I) can wait.
