Star Fox: The Next Generation Chapter 1

(perhaps we can agree that each fighter, with it's pilot included in consideration, is fairly evenly matched, and it will come down to circumstance, luck and teamwork to determine the outcome of a battle (I find this is more often the deciding factor then technology). That being said, we should lay down some basic guidelines, especially for maneuverability and speed, which are the real deciding factors in a dogfight, since weapons are variable, and armor on fighters is only effective to a certain degree.

@Kursed, the mass of a craft is still very important, even in a zero gravity, because you always require a greater amount of force to accelerate a mass (F=MA). Of course, having a G-diffuser will help in that situation, but that's another lecture...

I always thought that the Arwing was an all-rounder (F-18, if you'll allow such a reference), the Wolfen was a tricky, unforgiving hot-rod (MiG-23/29), and I'd think the Starchaser is a big, heavy fighter which uses brute force, sort of an F-15. I designed the StarCat to be built for speed and firepower, retrofitted with armor and G-diffusers to make it sort of a hack, but that's countered by unreliability and being extremely demanding, like the F-14A.

Thrust: ******* (legendarily fast)

Maneuverability: **** (Can be out-turned by Wolfens and Arwings)

Firepower: *** (average, specialized for taking out large, slow targets)

Defense: (No energy shields, very easily damaged)

You know, I think this might merit it's won discussion thread...)

(it does have a  couple g-difussers cerinian tech so their slightly smaller than the ones on the wolfen ,but yes I'll go with the f-15 like thing is a sturdy all round fighter customized a bit by Krystal. now as far as flying on one wing....well that'd take a skilled pilot :P but honestly  I don't think I was  the one complaining.)

(hi everyone!)

Freya allowed herself to wander through the station, slipping free of the constant pressure and becoming just another one of the crowd. This approach eventually deposited her on the observation deck of the station. From the high vantage part, she could either stare down into Sargasso's depths, or above, through clearsteel windows that let in the vista of space around them. It was as beautiful as always, the comforting blackness perforated by dots of white light and red gas from a nearby nebula. A single pilot fighter soared past.

Thoughts of Odin flickered through her mind. Her fist tightened involuntarily. That prick was probably ripping the Wolfen apart at that very moment, figuring out how it ticked. She didn't like the idea of facing Star Fox with the upper hand, much less after handing them a carrot like that.

I wonder if Silver can do anything about that, she thought. She could see him below her in the weight room, hanging upside down from a chin-up bar with a book in his hand. She made a bee-line for him, hoping he could pull something out of his hat that'd make it so they were going in with all there cards laying face up on the table. She'd go from there.

Silver looked past his book when he heard footsteps come in the door. It was Freya.

"Well, you're looking a little better," he said as she walked into the room. "What's on your mind?"

(I'll agree with Showtime. Lets forget about specs. btw. Welcome Fira!)

thanks!

"I'm worried about that missing Wolfen. Once Starfox gets into it -and you know they will- they'll know everything about us. Strengths, weaknesses, where to hit us so we'll go down. We can't go in like that. We're hard pressed to take them on even on a good day, and with intel like that..."

(I don't think odin's wolfen was stolen....correct me if I'm wrong)

"like the Music Fox?"KRystal asked looking at him, she turned the volume up a bit.

(Rolling with it! Worrying about losing the element of surprise is a perfectly logical train of thought.)

"Is that all you're worried about?" Silver replied. "Listen. Ever since the the Lylat wars, Wolfens have been available to whoever can afford or find one. Your Huntress is so customized that it's not even comparable to the Wolfen Odin has."

Freya still didn't look at ease.

"If it'll make you feel better, we could test out some new tactics on our next mission here. Even if they have the advantage one-on-one, we can still use teamwork and tactics to beat them."

Silver nodded, as if trying further to re-enforce his words.

(You're not getting the point. At all. This is a different fighter than the old Arwing. The over all look is the same. But it'smore streamlined and thinner. Other than that, it's a completely new Arwing. No one else knows about it. In other words, I invented a new type of Arwing. It's my little invention, and you're messing around with it. I dont like that.)

(I think it's you who fail to see the point here. I've never said we were still flying the older generations, if you check out my earlier posts, you'll realise I'm referring to both Freyas and Odins fighters as "Wolfen X's", which means they're also a later generation than what we have seen in the games, comen up with for the sake of this roleplay.

If you knew anything about mechanical design, you would realise that new generations of a proven, earlier designs are evolutions, not revovulitions. They are better in almost every single field, but never move away from their original purpose. If they so do, they are not considered a new generation, but an entirely new design.

If you had called it the "Ultrasuperbarrelrollofdoomfighter 8P/12C", then you could get away with entirely different characteristics from the original fighter.

Thus, a new Arwing would have to retain most of its characteristics trademarks. It would with almost certainity be better, but would have been constructed with the same purpose as the original design. An all-around fighter without any significant weaknesses that can work in both space and in a planets athmosphere.

What I'm trying to avoid is basically a pissing contest where everyone claim their fighter is better than everyone elses in every single field. Godmoding has killed to many roleplays around here, and I'm not going to let that happen again.

The same reason why you originally wanted us to fill in our skills in the character sheet at the beginning, so we could easily determine who would have an edge in a conflict between two or more characters, that is exactly the same reason as why I put together that simple fighter sheet, so when the time comes for the various crafts to meet in the air in a dogfight, we could roleplay it out as realistic as possible.

"Freya was rapidly catching up on Tiberius, but then, the Arwing broke of into a hard right hander that the Wolfen couldn't replicate, and it went wide, revealing it's side to Kursed's Starchaser, which readies to fire. With blinding speed, Silver shoots out of nowhere and fires at Kursed. The Starchaser soaks up the damage with ease, but loses it's lock on Freya"

^Something like that. One have to play to ones strenghts, and avoid ones weaknesses as best as possible.

Showtime got the point here, each craft should be eavenly matched, so the pilots skills, luck and teamwork would be the deciding factor, but each have their own strenghts and weaknesses.

BTW Showtime, you crossed the maximum limit on thrust you rascal! :P But perhaps I put it to low anyway. Any input on that everyone?

And if you and Kursed is going to liken them to various Star Wars fighters or real life fighters, I could as well give my input on what I like to think of them as in the world of automobiles.

Arwing is the Nissan GTR, fast, competent and easy on the limit. Wolfen is the Corvette ZR1, a handfull in the twisites with all that power, but a monster on the straights. Starchaser is probably something like a sporty Bentley, large beast, surprisingly nimble on its feet, but still sacrifice handling over other things.

The Starcat is probably something like an old, blown muscle car that fries it tires trough the whole quarter mile. Be it you're behind the wheel of it, or the guy lined up next to it in another fast car, you DON'T mess with it!)

(yea but i thought Odin split and went to Starfox)

(Glad to see you with us Fira. Odin was never a part of Starwolf, even if that was what Wolf and Odins father intended all along. Lady luck decided he would sign up with Starfox first.

His Wolfen X doesn't come from Starwolf, they are free to build for anyone who have the money and contacts in the blackmarket, something Odins father has more than enough of.

It's engine is also worked on to put out far beyond the limit of safety. It's thus faster, but manouvers worse, and needs services and tune-ups quite often.)

Odin again found himself on his room, plunking away at his guitar. He was slowly getting better, but there was still the odd tone that tourned sour, which didn't put im in a better mood than he already was. He didn't like waiting, he was a man of action. He hoped Tiberius would give the order to move out soon, so they could finally work together as team should.

(Like I said, you're taking something I thought up of and stepping it into the ground like a bug. I hate that. All I wanted to say is that it's slightly faster and harder to fly)

"Yeah. The music is fine." said Fox to Krystal. He leaned back and thought of the next move against Star Wolf or the CE. (Cornerian Empire O.O)

(Than the previous generations of the Arwing I pressume?

Also, I might have worded myself in a bit of anger here. Got a lot of weight on my shoulders now in real life, but I shouldn't let that affect my friends here on SF-O.)

(Thank you for clearing that up for us Asper.)

Alex soon returned with Odin"s fighter intact although she may have put a  couple scratches in the pain  since she flew through a debris field. She  quickly got out of the cockpit and looked over the wolfen X for any signs of damage. "oooh Odin's gonna kill me."Alex muttered as she spotted a large scrape in the paint on the side of the fuselage , Quickly rushing around she searched for paint to fix her mistake.

(No problem.)

It was at that moment Odin again entered the hangar. He had got bored of playing guitar, like he was bored of everything else. He headed for Alex, which had just jumped out of the "Dragon". She seemed somewhat anxious, and when she spotted sight of him, she placed herself between him and the fighter, as if it were something she wanted to hide.

"Well, what do you think of her?" He asked as he walked closer. Alex tried to act like nothing as she shuffled sideways to keep herself between him and the figther.

"Very nice Odin I'd like to own one myself perhaps a more standard model though."  Alex said trying to hide her paint brush between her and the fighter as she painted over the large scrape.  She finished the repair of the paint job and turned to Odin.  "You want me to give her a tune-up or a good waxing or someting?"  She asked trying to hide the fact she scratched the fighter.

(mkay, the problem here was that made the incorrect assumption that Wolfen's were not commercially available. That kinda renders her previous concerns invalid )

( Thanks Showtime. Okay, forgive me if I get any of these names wrong. Tell me and I'll fix.)

"That sounds like a plan," Freya agreed, "Maybe we should find Cliff and Atilla and do that now. It can't hurt our chances, and it'd be good for the team."

Odin shook his head slowly, smiling. "No, that won't be necesary. I'll do it myself. I've got nothing to do as it is now anyway, and I need something to keep myself busy with." And with that, he walked past Alex and grabbed hold of one of the hangar trolleys filled with tools and dragged it up to the fighter.

He didn't notice the spots Alex had painted over to hide the chips ans scratches. The modern nano based paint was allready almost dry.

He set to work on removing the engine cover first. He would give her a quick service and tune up, and then he would look over the exterior and give her a nice threatment there.

"Alright." Alex replied walking over to Ti's arwing to tune it up carefully since the antimatter/matter powersoruce was a bit touchy. She sighed with relief once Odin started working  on his wolfen seemly not  seeing the scratches she put into the craft she considered to have given her, her best ride since she first flew anything.
