New SF fan series appears to be coming [RD]

One "FredrykPhox" just dropped at thread at ArwingLanding detailing a 6-episode flash series he's doing.

It actually looks quite decent, though it breaks much from the canon. It also appears to follow the older story (pre-SFAd) as Fox appears to be with Fara, though there is a mention in one of his write-ups of a "blue-furred female" stealing Fox's Arwing.

One warning before you go, though. This thing appears oriented towards a mature audience, so the language is an issue. Also, one of the teasers gets a little suggestive, though nothing you wouldn't see in one of those stupid teen comedies that have been coming out lately (don't worry, there isn't anything exposed).

The character design is... Interesting. (Wolf has a mullet....)

I won't link directly to his page due to that trailer, but I will link to the AL thread. Just be aware of it before you go there. Also, he is vague about how deep he will explore some of the concepts in his storyboard panel samples.

EDIT: It's better I don't link to it. I just read the storyboards, and this this is not for those who can't stomach crude humor (especially such humor surrounding homosexuality). You can find it on AL's "Star Fox Free Talk" board if you wish.

Still, though, it looks like it will at least be good for a laugh.

I'm don't like the look of the characters, just barely similar to their actual appearence. I could see this being a sort of furry flash series but definitely not a Star Fox series. The plot is too comedic for my taste, I don't like the humorous explanation of things like Wolf's eye patch. Sure, flash series, why not, now SF flash series, as I said would not work out.

As soon as I read your post about a SF fan series on AL, I hauled tail ass over there!

And like...why didn't you give us a WARNING man?! O_o Oh wait...ya did....

XD

Kidding. I read your whole post.  :P As for the flash, the series appears to be BASED on Starfox, but portrayed in a humorous way similar to Family Guy. I don't think it's anything to take seriously though. Like DZ said it'll probably be good for a chuckle or two.

EDIT: Okay, not to be egotistical, but if there's comedy to that level, he does not have the right to call it the animated series.

I just watched a bit of it and... Wow. Its funny, but to the point where it doesn't match with the series. Or at least its not supposed to.

This is a great piece of work. No doubt. But as for beating me to my goal, he'd have to start from scratch.

Now, it may not be the serious and "cannological" approach some here hoped for when they read the title, but this seems like it's going to be a great laugh!

He posted something I feel more comfortable linking to:

http://www.angelfire.com/art/fvp/AnimatedStarFoxStoryboard_2.htm

This is what he calls an "audio storyboard." It will actually be animated.

Falco: "You better shut your mouth, I sound like Morrissey."

Fox: "For the last time: You do NOT sound like Morrissey." XD

I hate how he keeps calling it a flash "Star Fox Series". It looks to me like FredrykPhox is just creating his own characters (even fan characters if you will) and calling them Fox McCloud etc. He's barely grasping onto the actual SF storyline, I understand it's supposed to be comedic but he has no right to call it a Star Fox flash series.

Agreed. I don't even find it entertaining anymore. I think it's just stupid like the pointless jokes on Family Guy. I credit him on his progress but not his decisions. This isn't Starfox anymore. It's more like Starf***.

I don't think I've seen any star fox comedic flash that tries to be steeped in canon and lore.

Cry some more, guys. =/

It's parody. Most parodies have significant deviations from their original inspiration.

Besides, any Nintendo-sanctioned series would likely significantly deviate from the canon as well (look at the Super Mario Super Show [bowser caused mischief many more times than he kidnapped Peach], the Kirby anime [the US version was awful, but the original isn't half bad], the F-Zero Anime, the Pokemon Anime, etc. And then there's Captain N.....).

Also, we do not know enough about how he is developing the characters to call them completely out of character.

I think it's nice change from the usual Star Fox parodies out there with "DO A BARREL ROLL" and "CAN'T LET YOU DO THAT STAR FOX" every five seconds. While I don't doubt that this series will reference those memes, they aren't the main gags.

Hello folks. As the box to the left implies, I am Ant. I'm also Fred's housemate, but am here of my own volition to see to some of the 'concerns'. I'll try to keep this polite, no aggravation is intended.

I'm don't like the look of the characters, just barely similar to their actual appearence. Every Starfox game has used a different set of character designs. As of Command, Fox looks like a shark for example. As for the plot, you've seen maybe a few rough storyboards totaling in a few seconds worth of show... really not enough to make any definitive judgments about what the final work will be like yet. Yes, it is going to be 'comedic'. Yes, it'll have references to the 80s that perhaps not everyone will get. However, it will still reference story, characters and small details from the earlier games; Fred is a huge Starfox fan with all the comics, games and all that stuff.

As above, he does understand the source material. Especially how the source material keeps changing with every iteration thanks to Nintendo not aging the series as the original fans have.

Additionally, while Flash is used, it will not be a flash series. The product at the end of production is a fully animated video file. It uses the Starfox characters, their families, their Universe, uses events which happened in the series and is an animated short series. Hence, it is a perfectly logical name: Starfox the Animated Series. It can be a 'the' as there does not seen to be anything comparable that has been released yet.

Apologies if I mistook you for someone else, but are you that other animator who sent Fred an e-mail the other day while he was at work? Did you then go to send another inflammatory, threatening e-mail when he didn't immediately reply? That's really not the way to go about making friends or setting up collaborative works.

Now, your profile claims you to be 15. That means that many jokes on Family Guy and in this upcoming series may go a little over your head. We dinosaurs are stuck in the 80s, you see. The music, the fashions and the movies were much more fun than they are these days. As for it being Starfox or not, wait and see. Additionally, mind your flaming. I don't trust the words of someone claiming what Starfox is and isn't when they were not even born until after the series had started, not from ageist principles but from if they show proof or referenced arguments. Calm down, look at it reasonably and stop being mad that he didn't reply immediately and start animating for you, and stop complaining. You've made your point with the last few posts. As for in any subject, be it artistic or scientific, when you make any kind of feedback make it constructive.

Peace and love all, thanks, ta ta for now.

[edit] I really can't tell my left from right it seems :)

Just had a look at the thread. Looks great from what was posted. I do like Andross's character design. I'll be watching this for sure.

Yes the character's appearances change each game, yet they retain the same basic features that make them easily recognizable. FredrykPhox changed their design so much that one could just barely tell who they are supposed to be. If I wasn't told, I would probably think that most of the in the "series" are just fan characters. Not only is "FredrykPhox" changing the characters' features, he also appears to be changing their personalities as well. That's going too far. The man is making Falco sound like a dumbass and Fox look like a p***y(etc.). Now you ask "how can you judge from a few concept storyboards and trailers?". So you mean that things might change in the story later, so what? Falco is going to get hit on the head and suddenly act all cool and badass? Things can't just change like that.

Now I wouldn't mind if he was making up these characters and saying his "series" is just a few side stories, but he obviously isn't. I'm with Tiberius and his series on this one.

For heaven's sake.  What ever happened to original thought?  If Phox wants to 'slaughter the series' in the eyes of the people who see it as slaughter, let him.  It's a free country, guys.  (Free internet usage, anyway)  If you don't like the content, you don't have to watch it.  No one put a gun to your head and said 'you have to like it because it bares the name "StarFox".'

Now, I have been watching the guy.  He's been doing a lot of this work himself, with some help from Ant.  He's very self-motivated and kind.  He doesn't deserve to be hassled for having ideas that don't fit into the 'mold' of what a StarFox fan thinks.  He is himself a fan and I think what he's doing is fantastic.  So if you don't like it, don't watch it.  It's about as simple as that.

Well said.

Yet he is acting like it's an official series that Nintendo hired him to create.

Where the heck to do you have that from?

Uhm... no he isn't.

Listen to Hoshi. She knows what she is talking about.

I agree that the hair is a bit weird, but that doesn't turn me off of it. In fact, that's really the only major character design difference (Peppy was brown in the SNES game) aside from the trailer trash Slippy pic, which I think is hilarious.
