Talking the talk.

Newsflash:  Aliens elsewhere in the universe don't speak English.

Sure, all the characters speak English in the series, but let's be realistic about this.

I'm in the process of developing a Cornerian language, but it won't exactly be a true language since it's basically encrypted English.

First, each vowel is replaced with another vowel with a similar appearance frequency.

This way, common letters are replaced with other common letters, and rare letters are replaced with other rare letters.  This makes the language more pronounceable.

"Y" is regarded as a vowel.

Next, each consonant is replaced with another consonant with a similar appearance frequency for the same reasons.

After changing all of the letters, all of the two-consonant combinations are considered.

A vowel is inserted in the middle of each combination to make it more pronounceable.  ( bc = bEc,  cd=cOd,  etc. )

This conversion does not include combos ending with "Y".  (by, cy, dy)  However, it does include combos beginning with "Y".  (yb, yc, yd)

I'll be making more considerations as this process continues.

In the meantime, feel free to discuss issues regarding how people talk, dialects, language barriers, and the like in the Lylat System here.

Questions about my language creation process are welcome, too.

I don't see the reasoning you're doing this for. Lylat is a fictional universe, so they just might speak English (for real). We don't know because someone invented the whole galaxy.

Who invented the universe? :P

It's mainly just for fun and to practice my programming skills.  And yes, that's entirely possible, too.

I would expect that most of the system speaks the same language with exceptions such as Sauria.

I imagine we hear a "translation" and that the Lylat language's true form is unknown. Kind of like Basic in Star Wars or Westron in LOTR.

Hi,

if you want to hear the Lylat language play LylatWars (EU Version of SF64). There you can switch the voicec to Lylat. Sounds quite strange but funny:

Not try to make a translation to that XD

Well, I guess that's proof of my theory.

Of course that is a throwback to SFSNES where everyone talked like that.

But doesn't Fox have a translator? When he met Tricky it wasn't working (it's awhile since I've played, might have remember incorrectly) but then Fox heard him in English and understood. So maybe loads of places in the Lylat system are speaking other languages.

Makes sense.  I mean, if it's *that* easy to translate.

Too bad they don't have those things here!

Speaking of languages, what rules did Mr. Krystal base that Saurian translator on? I understand x=y and all that but on what facts? The language is spoken in a game, there's no Saurian dictionary.

Weren't the rules for translating Saurian included somewhere in the SFA instruction guide?
