FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE

Release date: 2005

Overall Score: 8.5

There were several James Bond games before this one was released, and those included: Goldeneye 64, Nightfire, Agent Under Fire and Everything or Nothing. All of these were very good, so the bar was set high for From Russia with Love. Especially interesting was how it was going to be 'old-school': more specifically, it was based off the film from the 1960's and Sean Connery was going to star. How would this turn out?

Well, despite mixed critical reviews, From Russia with Love was a very solid third person shooter. You got a feel that you were in some place in Europe in the 60's throughout the game, and at the same time things were a lot like they were in the predeseccors, with an arsenal of weapons to choose from and plenty of different bad guys to eliminate. Basically, anything you would expect out of a Bond game could be found here.

Not to say that this is the best Bond game of all time: it's actually far from it. The main thing that keeps this from from being a classic is the lack of excitement. That's right, you heard me right, this particular game 007 game doesn't have enough excitement in it.What I mean is, there's no propelling down walls while shooting a machine gun, there's no flying in a helicopter and blowing up cars from the air, nothing is truly memorable here. You play it and complete it, and no cutscene or boss battle really sticks with you. You'll remember the solid gameplay of course, but I personally had hope for more.

Back to the good things: the multiplayer provides an interesting spin on a familiar feature. Sure you can just blow your opponent away with a shotgun, but you can use a jetpack AND blow your opponent away with a jetpack. And there are traps spread around the levels, such as a panel that'll send the train zooming by. It does get boring after a while, but nonetheless I'll commend the effort to bring some multiplayer fun to a Bond game that had been absent for too long.

From Russia with Love is a great game that definitely earned it's spot on this list. But most of it is strangely forgettable, and the old-school feel sometimes gives it a casual feel that wasn't felt in previous games. If I were to rank all the James Bond video games, this one would be ranked right in the middle. But with a score 0f  8.6, that really says something about the quality of these games, doesn't it?

In short: Very good game that seems to be missing something.

I completely forgot about SSBM. You just saved it from a total snub.

SUPER MARIO SUNSHINE

Release Date: 2002

Overall Score: 8.6

Depending on the general opinion of Mario here on Starfox Online, I could either be applauded for putting it this low on the list or be hated for it. Either way, this is where I stand. The best thing about SMS are the visuals: they're some of the best I've ever seen. No, not because they're super realistic or super detailed, but because of how unique they are. I can't think of s single game, whether it's on the Wii or Gamecube, that looks like it. Everything perfectly suits the tropical/vacation theme of the game, from the bright blue waters to the sun-filled villages. If not for an inconsistent framerate and some lame looking characters the graphics would be perfect.

The gameplay is also creative and at the time was something nobody had really seen before. But it's not nearly as refined as the graphics are: camera problems can cause headaches at times, like in one part where Mario has to climb a wall/fence in a theme park. The camera positions itself behind Mario, then from the side, it simply can't find a decent position.

Then there's the uneven difficulty, at times it's straightforward and fairly easy, other times it's confusing and difficult. I don't mind the latter, but I despise the parts where you were literally thrown into a level with no clue of what to do. A Luigi Super Guide would've helped in those parts.

But I guess this is what I like about SMS. It's a total love-hate thing when I play it. I love the visual style and it's occasional brilliant gameplay, but hate it's stupid camera and the frustration puzzles it forces you to solve. It's a really great game, even though I seem to be mostly negative about it. I just find it to be a little overrated. It has problems that simply shouldn't exist in a Mario game. Super Mario Galaxy is better by far.

In Short: Fun but frustrating and a little flawed.

Okay, 2 games that have not been mentioned that MUST be on this list.

Metroid Prime and Resident Evil 4.

We all should know the story of Prime, groundbreaking, and a rebirth of an amazing franchise. And Resident Evil 4 for the same reasons. It streamlined the way third person shooters are done, and it reinvented the Resident Evil franchise. It was supposed to be a Gamecube exclusive, but things changed. But a lot of gaming publications consider Resident Evil 4 to be one of, if not the, best Gamecube games.

I, quite tragically, lost my copy of Resident Evil 4 a few months ago and have not been able to track down a copy (looong stories). I player some of it and loved it but I didn't play it enough for me to consider it for a spot.

I really should have added a note at the beginning stating how I have NOT played a lot of supposedly great games. It's just me: I'm very picky and haven't come around to getting ones like Metroid and others.

I WILL get around to getting any GC games I've never played and will probably include them in The Greatest Nintendo Games Ever project.

Okay...I don't know about you guys but Super Mario Sunshine was...how do I put this...half crap. Half of it was crap and the other was fun. I think I don't like it because of F.L.U.D.D. The half crap is all the parts in the game where you have that piece of Sh--- I mean eco-matter on your back. The actual fun and challenging part was when you DIDN'T have that thing on your back. In fact, F.L.U.D.D. screwed up mario in a way. In SSBB, they replaced his spinning move (down B) with F.L.U.D.D. that does absolutely nothing!!! Okay, maybe I'm wrong. It may come in handy in Brawl - but really, how often do you use F.L.U.D.D? And when you do, does it prove useful by giving your opponent a hard time? Then they took the spinning move (down B) and put it as your aerial down A attack. You know how hard it is to defeat a opponent with that kind of aerial move? Instead of sending them flying, they take 1 or 3 damage and as a added bonus, they can use their up B move again! All thanks to F.L.U.D.D.

To me, Sunshine was not as great as I thought it to be. Furthermore, Sunshine's main gadget, F.L.U.D.D., ruined mario in brawl (in my opinion). On a scale from 1 to 10 (10 being the best) I'd give it a 3. Maybe a 4 if someone can lighten the shame of Sunshine.

I disagree. I loved the flood. My main issue was how the game seemed designed to wind you up.

I don't like these kind of lists because it implys that games can be easily put in order of bestness in a very objective way, which isn't true.

I also liked the flood, I found a glitch where you can walk under the water :)

FLUDD was a cool addition in my opinion. It added a different style to the game, made it fun in it's own way. If you ask me, Super Mario Sunshine is extremely underrated.

Zelda is always a fun and great game. Rogue agent was really good, but then again, it had its downs.
