WOOT! NOW I CAN FINALLY GET TEAM FORTRESS 2!!!!!!!!!!

One question, will Team Fortress and the other Orange Box titles be standalone, or will they only be available on Steam

I already have TF2 and Steam on my iMac, no Bootcamp. You can buy all Orange Box games separately. I would love to play L4D too but even at 800x500 res and all low settings and no post processing I get below 5 fps...

Also, you're going to need to get a better mouse for FPS games, 1 button mouse is a joke...

What are you? From the dark ages? Macs have supported multi-button mice for as long, if not longer, than Windows. Apple doesn't even MAKE a one button mouse anymore. Hasn't for a few years.

I'm not saying Macs don't support multiple button mice, I'm just saying anyone who uses those 1 button mice need to connect another mouse if they're going to be playing FPS games...

Those of you who's excuse for not playing TF2 is "I'm a Mac user" now have no excuse. :P

Arrr I really wish I could play tf2... My internet is just soooo slow, and my computer is pretty slow also... I was just trying to play it today, spontaneous moments where the game freezes... anytime I kill someone, I freeze can't move, and then the next thing I know, I'm dead  it never used to be so bad, I loved that game so much. :(

There is one thing I am still confused about.

Will Team Fortress 2 only be available through Steam, will it get a separate Mac release, or will the PC version be used on the Mac through a patch? I can't find any info on this.

From what I've heard, if you already own a given game, you are allowed to download it again for whatever platform you are on, so long as you provide your ID and password and such.

How will this work on Mac with a lack of DirectX, if it's an OpenGL port that will also work with Windows, I'm downloading that version, because as said, I love OpenGL.

Yesterday' date=' we announced that Steam and all our Source engine games will be coming to the Mac. Sound too good to be true? Well, guess what: It is  true! There are no catches! Sometimes life actually works like that. The bad news is that we've just truth bombed your hard-earned lie detector back to the stone age, and you'll probably lose all your money to the next international lottery scam that sneaks through your spam filter. Still, Steam on the Mac!

Since we're getting a lot of email asking the same basic questions, we figured we'd just answer them here:

Q: I own TF2 on the PC. Do I have to buy it again on the Mac?

A: No. If you own TF2 on the PC, you own TF2 on the Mac (and vice versa). You don't have to buy the game twice. In addition, the Steam Cloud will automatically propagate your configuration settings and custom sprays to your Mac for you.

Q: Is it just some crappy emulated version of TF2?

A: No! Also: How dare you! Mac users aren't getting a crappy emulated version of the game. TF2 will run natively on OSX, like an actual big boy game for adults.

Q: Hmm, that all sounds pretty good. But I'll bet I can't play with my friends who own Macs if I'm on my PC.

A: Mac and PC users will all play together, on the same servers. We're not creating two separate universes. We're all going to be one big, happy family with guns locked in a bloody, never-ending struggle for cap points.

http://www.teamfortress.com/ There's a Saxton Hale comic cover on the article that's somewhat amusing.

It uses OpenGL. As for the ability to download a Windows OpenGL version, I don't think you will have that choice BUT, in the interest of reduce the amount of development, this COULD mean that Valve will eventually stop using DirectX since it only works on one type of system, versus OpenGL running on everything (even phones).

As you said about OpenGL being old, this means most graphics cards support it with ease, lowering system requirements slightly.  I fully support OpenGL since it's compatible for nearly everything.  And OpenGL still can have good graphics.

OpenGL 4.0 was announced yesterday. They are moving fast. OpenCL was released in the wild last year and has already caused much interest. My thesis is partially based on OpenCL.
