What makes the Starfox series so amazing?

I've loved the Starfox series ever since I had the pleasure to pick up video game controller.  Now that I've played all the games, posted on the forums, wrapped my life around the series, concerned myself with what happens to the characters, and hoping that Nintendo doesn't screw up, I thought about something.  What makes Starfox so epic? It's amazing, but what elements make it such an enjoyable experience? This question now plagues my mind, does anyone have an idea?  Personally to me, it's the concept of the games, the characters being anthro, and just the fantasy of it all.  It could never really exist (to our knowledge) but in a way, it is real.  Wow, deep thought in progress!  :D

I've been waiting for the day a thread like this would spawn somewhere.

My response is that its just so cool.

The ships, the characters with all of there backgrounds, the whole idea of the game and the story is amazing. Just to wrap it all up, an awesome gameplay experience that you cant find in flying some dumb banshee in Halo. Star Fox remains as one of the most respected yet crazy game-series of all time.

Exactly!! It's just so hard to explain what makes Lylat so magical.  It's like the thought that it may actually exist somewhere, and.....just the thought of that makes me jump for joy!

What I like about it is the gameplay, something about it is more fun than other on-rail shooters, and the characters. Gordon Freeman, Master Chief, Marcus Fenix and such are cool and all, but they have no real character to become a fan of.  I don't care what happens to them, but Star Fox characters, those have real potential for development. I care about what happens to them, I can't really explain why, but that's it.

You've hit the nail on the head for me! especially this, "I care about what happens to them."

I love the characters, and gameplay, main reason my I like SF64 the best of all the SF games.

It's one of the few Nintendo series to not have a game for every damn sport.

For me, what made this series great was not the gameplay, but the story. :D To me it is story that makes a video game great, and not the gameplay. The story to the series (primarily in 64, Adventures and Assault) is just the most enjoyable I have ever encountered in a video game series. That and the fact that it had great characters to back it up with. :) As I have said before, Fox McCloud is my favorite Nintendo character and possibly my favorite VG character, period. And his teammates and allies rock too. :P

That might be one of the reasons.

Of course that! Thought I have many more reasons. Everything about the games seems to be great. For example, the CDF stinks, but that leaves you with lots of enemies to blast to pieces, so that is 'good' in some sense . It has it´s share of humour (for example in SF64 when Andross is just a floating brain and says "Only I have the brains to rule Lylat!").

The are also some interesting 'quirks', if I can call them that way, such as the warp at meteo that allows you to go to Katina. Overall, I have not seen any games that are as original as the SF ones.

In my opinion its the core game-play. Not the characters or the plot. The Plot by it-self wouldn't stand a chance. Subjectively the plot is actually pretty weak. But, as far as I know, it is the first rail-shooter, and I don't think there is any other game like it.

I really don't care much for the characters or the story.  What I enjoy is that these games are fun to play.

I agree with Mr.  Krystal partially because of animals in spaceships, but mainly they're having a war of some kind.  My personal favorites were the mission on Starfox 64 where you had to help Bill protect a base from a Venom invasion and the VERY FIRST level of Starfox Assault.  Assault's first level was cool because it had an armada of ships shooting at one another and explosions were EVERYWHERE; explosions and sound effects could have needed a little bit more touching up on, but they were fine.

Katina :)

Also, Assault's graphics were awesome, they would be even better on the Wii :)

, you have to have made some kind of connection to the characters!
