Perfect Dark

It's a shame Rare switched, since I loved this game and spent ridiculous hours on the combat simulator with the original release...if I had a 360, I'd definitely get the remake, it's worth it so much, even more with the online mode.

I don't have a 360, but I did get the original version for the N64 recently, and I LOVE IT! One of the other reasons that I'm still upset over Rare being sold to Microsoft.

Speaking of Rare games, I was playing the Area 51 mission in the game, and you encounter the inside agent Johnathan. I believe that his voice actor is Steve Malpass, that man that plays Fox in Star Fox Adventures. It DEFINITELY sounds like him, and IMDB credits him as being in Perfect Dark.

Hmm. I'll have to keep an ear out for that. Krystal is in Left 4 Dead one, and you definatly hear it. I never did get onto her about Left 4 Dead.

Not really too much of a shame. Rare is a shell of it's former self. By the time Microsoft got their hands on Rare, it was already suffereing from talent loss. Since 1999, Rare has had a steady brain-drain. It has affected every corner of the company. The Stamper bros. left (they founded Rare), many of their best designers and programmers left. Even David Wise and Steve Burke (their main music composers) left.

Goldeneye and Perfect Dark were the pinnacle for Rare. They haven't come close to matching those titles, so go figure they'd just do a remake of the one of those two they could do (EA owns the James Bond game rights now).

Really, Nintendo lost nothing of value. SFAd was one of Rare's last decent titles, and that is likely because so much of the legwork was done on Dinosaur Planet by the time shit started going south.

I already knew that Rare had lost the bulk of it's talent during the Microsoft buyout, so even if somehow Nintendo got Rare back, it wouldn't be the same and we would be getting sub-par games.

It's just another one of those things from the earlier years of gaming that we are never going to get back. It's sad, but things change, and we can't do anything about it, even though we wish we could.

Oddly enough, there was a guy on internet who was ranting about how if rare went back to nintendo they would be awesome again. You explain that it's bollocks and they throw a fit.

Actually, DZ, Microsoft made a remake for Goldeneye, a complete remake, updated graphics and everything, but were unable to release it because they need Nintendo's approval, and the deal was that Microsoft could put the remake on Xbox Live Arcade, and Nintedo would only be able to release the original on the Virtual Console. Nintendo didn't approve the deal, or the right for Microsoft to release the remake, so many people got upset at Nintendo, even though they were given the raw end of the deal.

I heard about that, and I don't know what Nintendo is trying to pull there. It's either one of two things if you ask me.

Either A) There is something in the deal that is screwing over Nintendo and they don't want it to happen.

Or B) Nintendo is being greedy and doesn't want Microsoft to have Goldeneye at all.

It honestly could be either one, but seeing how we have no idea what is going on in the deal, we shouldn't jump to conclusions, but one thing is certain, until that problem is resolved, EVERYBODY is getting screwed over.

Are you SURE it was Nintendo that was getting the way and not EA?

Pretty sure it was Nintendo, since there were several comments to the article I saw about it, and it was all bitching about Nintendo, no mention of EA. I'll go dig around a bit, though. Just to make sure.

Apparently, it boiled down to not being able to decide how Nintendo would be compensated for the rights, but they are saying that it was never a remake, just a porting of the original with online gameplay, which is bull. I've seen the screenshots of the remake, it was Goldeneye's first level, the dam, and the graphics weren't quite next gen, but they definitely weren't N64 graphics.

They apparently do not have full rights, since Nintendo was able to stop them from releasing a remake or port of Goldeneye.

Sub par attempt at the troll there.

Nintendo doesn't have the final word on the matter. Goldeneye is now a legal nightmare the likes of System Shock or Modern Warfare, or even WWF attitude and no mercy if you remember that far back. Nintendo, Rare and EA all are tied to the game, and none of them want to let the others win.

The way I see it, we shouldn't really worry about who gets the remake, or the original for download. If you have the original for the N64, just use that, and enjoy it.

well thats strange because goldeneye is being remaked by RARE!

From Wikipedia

Activision-Blizzard now holds the license to publish new iterations of the James Bond series. EA decided they could not deliver a James Bond product that was profitable. Activision handed the developement project to Treyarch, the developer of several Call of Duty games. The reception of their first James Bond game, Quantum of Solace, received mixed reviews.

The President of Nintendo of America, Reggie Fils-Aime, announced that Nintendo is exploring the possibility of adding GoldenEye 007 to the Virtual Console, despite a complicated situation in which the game's developer Rare is owned by Microsoft  (producers of the rival Xbox 360 console) and the video game rights to the James Bond franchise are held by Activision. He stated, "We would love to see it [on the Virtual Console], so we're exploring all the rights issues."

On January 7, 2008, Xbox Evolved confirmed the existence of GoldenEye 007 on Xbox Live Arcade.[45]  On January 11, 2008, 1UP.com reported that a GoldenEye port (as opposed to a remake) had been in development at Rare for several months, but stated that the title would not be released on the Xbox Live Arcade since "Microsoft and Nintendo couldn't agree on the financial side of things."

Maybe it has been sorted, or maybe it's being made without a publisher like Colonial Marines was. I doubt it though.
