DS questions...

I've always wondered some questions regarding how I should treat my DS. I know I may sound paranoid, but I paid $170 of my OWN money to buy this toy, so I'm pretty nervous I'll damage it. Anyway, I have a couple of questions...

- Is it okay if I use the DS while charging it? (I know everyone does it, but just to make sure...)

- Is it alright if I charge my DS before it runs out of battery?

Q:Is it okay if I use the DS while charging it? (I know everyone does it, but just to make sure...)

A:Is it okay to play on a laptop computer while charging? Yes  it's perfectly fine.

Q:- Is it alright if I charge my DS before it runs out of battery?

A: What kind of silly question is this? Is it okay to change the batteries in anything before they become too weak to use?

Once again perfectly fine.

Most of your questions here involve simple electricity knowledge...

Some electronics, for the first use, you have to fully charge and fully drain the battery on the first use, I beleive the Original type of Ds was, but I have no experience with any newer models.

Also be careful, my L button no longer works, because I use it way to much for playing games like metroid and sf command. (I think command did it)

I dunno how to prevent it from breaking, mebbe press it lightly.

That's bogus to be honest. unless it's a piece of junk you shouldn't have to do that.

Might want to fullly chargeit the first use so you can get the most time out of your battery charge.

Depending on the type of battery an electronic device uses, one sometimes have to decharge it completely before starting the charging process again. Otherwise, the amount of maximum charge it can hold will decrease drastically with each charging. Some of the charging devices are thus made to empty the battery completely before recharging it.

I don't remember what type of battery that was tough, doubt the DS uses that type anyway.

Heh. Yeah. Sorry for asking the questions. I was just worried my DS was losing its maximum battery charge. Stupid paranoid sense!

IIrc, the DS running at full pelt lasts 16 hours, I dount you will get that much use between plugs.

Also, you can play while charging, I recomend it. The battery might get a little hot though. I've had my DS one for ages charging it whenever I I have never had a battery issue.

The big issue with cartraidge based systems is the internal save battery dies after about 10 years or so. Pokemon Red, Blue and Yellow? All dead. Unlike other systems though, the hardware is so important to a DS, I don't know how emulators will cope.

But that's just a button machine and thus can easily be emulated. How are you going to accuratly emulate a system with a touch screen without the original hardware? My guess it would have to be using those pirate carts.

I'm just curious....

is it ok to play my DS while charging? Not on a computer or laptop.

If not, then why?

Also, is it okay to stop charging my DS even if it is still not fully charged?

The DS, like most electronic devices, uses Lithium Ion (Li-ion) batteries.

I know they are common. They tend to provide a good power output compared to their size, but the main problem with them is they have a shelf life (it will degrade even if taken out of the device).

As you DS ages, it will hold less charge.

Another problem is that heat affects capacity during high charge. Sadly, charging Li-ion batteries creates heat. Due to this, a constantly charging LI-ion battery could lose 20% capacity per year at room temperature. This gets even worse as the temperature goes up.

This isn't too big of an issue unless you leave it plugged in for weeks, or only play with it plugged in.

If you are going to store your DS, drain the battery to significantly less than half first. It will last longer.
