Team Sabre is here! What did you need? :P

As cliched as it sounds, Halo and Modern Warfare are both fantastic. Halo is the best, and a console FPS no less. The AI is engaging, the settings varied, the guns are different and the graphics iconic and show that you can have colour and still be serious.

The shooting aspect of MW games is a bit lackluster, as is the game design, but when it comes to mood and getting your blood pumping, none are better, it's mostly story, atmosphere ect, it's flash, but it's good flash. Plus it's the only big name multiplayer game I can stand to play online and the co-op in that is fantastic.

FEAR is another game I keep coming back too. much like Halo, the effective weapons and challenging enemies make the game fun. It's a much more tactical game that has that moment to moment desision making I love in FPS. The horror parts get a bit annoying though.

^this exclude the FEAR part

I loved DF:BHD, I still have it but 'twas on Mac for PPC, now I've got an intel. Ah the memories I have of that game. Artifacts make it unplayable now.

It's not expensive right now, for 20 dollars I actually saw the Delta Force collection at Best Buy, including BHD and I believe the expansion. You could get a new copy if you wanted, the game is worth it IMO, the single player itself is worth it.

Who cares if it's old? It was an amazing game that set a lot of standards for console fps's. Also...quite a lot of people still play it seeing as team of modders is bringing it to PC on a source engine game.

C'mon, you gotta be nice to the classics! They paved the way, and Goldeneye 64 was EPIC.  According to that logic, the original Starfox can be treated the same way, horribly outdated and almost unplayable by today's depressing "standards".

No. That's the rose tint of nostalgia. True they paved the way, but that doesn't mean it hasn't dated. 3 of my favourite games are from PS1 and N64 era. However, some games are like fine wines that age well, Goldeneye aged as well as milk. So did turok and the original resident evil. Even Halo 1 hasn't dated well. Starfox 64 dated well, the original is in the middle somewhere. These games hold a special place for me, sure, but that doesn't mean they haven't dated, just that I/we still enjoy them.

Also Goldeneye isn't epic, if anything it's shorter then todays games.

Today's standards suck

How so?

Goldeneye is a horrible game, it's like Chuck Norris, everybody says it's awesome then everyone else assumes it's the best game ever.

In my opinion, I think Goldeneye is a good game. NOT GREAT. But GOOD. I have it and have unlocked mission there is. Compared to today's games, it could be considered bad like Mr. Foxer said. But if you really have played it at a younger generation, you would have learned to enjoy it. That's what I think.

Right. It was great for it's day, and it moved FPS and action games forward. It made mission objectives popular, instead of simply 'finish a level'. In this age of 2 stick controlers, 60fps, dynamic AI, narative driven games goldeneye is a glitchy, jerky and hard to control with almost no plot.

I believe some guys here are mistaking "Best" with "my favorite" pick. I'll take myself as example, I consider Perfect Dark 64, UT 2004 and  HL 2 as my favorite FPS. However, I do know that games like halo 3, call of duty modern warfare series, crisis and (insert well known fps from 360/PS3/PC) are naturally superior to my picks (even if I just don't like them that much, I have played halo 3 several times, and while it's all shiny and stuff, I'd rather play perfect dark or UT just because I like them more for x and y reasons). It's like comparing  super mario bros 3 with super mario galaxy, the last being utterly superior to its predecessor, however, some people can argue that super mario bros 3 is still their favorite.

If we were to truly decide the best FPS, then most of the picks on the poll should be removed, since the FPS world is ruled by the HD consoles and PC. The wii's only picks would be metroid and red steel 2, the first one being more "adventure" than a FPS and the second one being "half FPS/half swordy" so they don't really fit here. Of course, you can throw the call of duty games for the wii  and the conduit as well, they are obviously FPS, but they really stand short so they aren't worth mentioning here.

Mainly, favoritism has to disappear if you are going to truly decide the best FPS, or else, just change the topic name to "Favorite FPS"

By that logic, there is no best, as games are subjective. On a purly technical level, Crysis and Trespasser are the 2 best FPS ever made.

Trespasser could have been really good. But it became to complicated for its own good. Unpolished and bugged.
