Next Star Fox Game: speculation and ideas. (REBOOT)

This is a reboot of: http://forums.starfox-online.net/index.php?topic=3424.960

This thread is for the discussion of speculation and ideas for the next SF game.

If you read on a blog somewhere about an upcoming game, pleas post it in the rumor busting thread first.

http://forums.starfox-online.net/index.php?topic=6028.0

DO NOT POST RUMORS (aka "News"), SPECULATION, or GAME IDEAS IN THEIR OWN THREADS!

Only verified news (confirmed by Nintendo or major game publication) can have it's own thread. If you find something, POST IT IN THE RUMOR BUSTING THREAD FIRST. That way it can be evaluated.

Once a new Star Fox game is confirmed, one of two thing will happen:

If it is a Wii (or Wii successor) title, I will make a new board for it.

If it is a DS, DSiWare, or 3DS* game, discussion for it will move to the "Portable Star Fox" thread.

* The 3DS is a new Nintendo handheld.  Supposedly capable of 3D without 3D glasses. More details to come at E3.

I think It would be cool to have different playable teams. Like you could play as the Star Fox team, then after completing their storyline, you'd unlock Star Wolf, or some other team.

I also think a DSi/WiiWare RTS* would be a neat Idea.

*RTS = Real Time Strategy

I'll dig up my 0,02 $ again.

Here comes my two cents on what pathway the next SF game should chose to walk down.

Air or ground:

I think SF would be best served by combining the two. It will compromise the quality in cormparison to a dedicated flyer game, but I think that is a price worth paying. About 70-60/30-40 distrubtion for Air/ground respectively.

But unlike Assault, it is important to avoid ground missions becoming repetative. Assault ground missions was basically "Destroy object A before they can spawn B number of opponents to stop you."

Gameplay-wise, Mr. Foxer is right on the money with both his examples. Some degree of wingman control would be much appreciated. "Hands of my prey Falco!", "Slippy, to the back where you can't get hurt!" and "Peppy, do a barrel roll!" would be my favorites.

Another thing about air missions is that I think the speed of the Arwing should get a drastic increase. It will still not be realistic, but it won't look stupid with the guy on foot down below almost keeping up with you in your high-tech state of the art space fighter. It will make things a lot more hectic, but that is one of the reasons we like SF isn't it?

Eye-candy:

The design style of, and graphics/animations at least as good as that of Adventures, and I'll be more than satisfied on this aspect. Get Krystal in something less reluctant to get thousand of furverts to cover the floor in drool as well.

Story:

This is one of the big buggers. Where, and how do we start this chapter of the franchise.

While I have spoken out against the people who disregard Command as cannon, which parts of it is untill big N says otherwise, it's tempting to discard it and start immediatly after Assault. The reason why I will get to later on.

Main plotpoint I won't really say anything about. But I think it would be a good idea to leave "A threat to the entire galaxy appears!" out of it, and make the SF team more like mercenaries that saviours. For example a shady figure gives them what seems like an easy, but profitable job, and they get way, way more than they bargained for.

Move away from war on the interplanetary stage and on to the dark underground of Lylat.

A little darker undertone would be welcome, but nothing more "adult" when it comes to language and sex.

And now I get to one of the mayor points of this post. What the heck are we going to do with Krystal?

With half the fanbase having such an interest for her, the way she is portrayed can make or break the entire game.

She can't be taken out or killed of, that would cause riots. But, I don't think she can stay with the team either.

If she and Fox ever had something for each other, they would have been married at this time.

Anyone saying they would be interested in playing a SF game where this couple flies around defeating baddies, while proclaiming their love for each other, arguing, and being worried sick of each other, simply doesn't know his/hers own good.

The only way that would work, is if we fast forwarded many years and took up the game with a new generation of heroes, lead by their son or something. But I'm at least not ready to give up on the current characters yet. That can be something to consider in the future, but not yet. This team still has to much to give.

So, they have to split up at the start of the game. But not necesarily in the dramatic, rough way so many seemed to hate about Command.

What I think would be the better option is if Krystal herself left by her own free will, to discover what happened in her past. With Fox reluctantly letting her go after they pledge to each other that they will see each other again, how much they love each other and all the other romantic mumbo jumbo.

After that, they split ways. Krystal goes to find out what happened to Cerenia, while Starfox goes out on their own mission.

Split storylines, running parallel with each other. In one level you find yourself in space blasting the crap out of your enemies in good ol' SF64 style, while in another you controll Krystal on a ground mission on a planet on the other side of the galaxy.

As the game progresses, we get to know that they are ultimately working towards the same goal. Whatever is to blame for Cerenias destruction is also the work of the person the Starfox team is chasing. And at the final battle, they might meet and join up with each other to take down the main villain, whoever that might be.

At the end, everyone is happy, the team get paid and Krystal is together with Fox again.

The fans wanting a game with SF64 style gameplay without much romantic subplot get their dose of that, those who want to find out more about Krystal get their fair share as well.

If someone can find something bad there, then they are an infantile "Kverulant", a proper nitpicker.

Other points:

Katt Monroe, Bill Grey and a few new, interesting NPC's will be most welcome. Cameo appearances of some old ones would be some cool easter eggs as well.

Starwolf is hired in to kill you properly this time, and boy is they going to give you a run for the money. Give them some proper character developement, and perhaps another member to even the odds. Dangerous and hated, but not mindless klling machines. A solid injection of serum "Badass X".

This isn't final, might end up adding or changing a few points after I think it trough some more.

Realistic Space fighter simulator along the lines of Steel Batallion but with the arcady action of Ace combat.

Think about it, aside from the old Star wars rougue squadron games, not many games have come close to recreating epic space battles.

Darting your ship inbetween massive "knife fighting" capital ships, ingame space-to-atmosphere fighting transitions. Being able to go all range mode or the faster and less maneuvorable corridor mode at your own tactical discretion.

That would be cussing awesome and you know it.

The Wii can play Gamecube games...

All you need is the disc and a GCN controller. You could likely get both in the used bin at Gamestop for cheap.

Gameplay that the developers of the next SF should use as examples are the following.

On-foot gameplay of Metal Arms

Air combat of Star Wars : Rebel Strike Rogue Squadron 3 and Rogue Leader : Rogue Squadron 2

I think that Rogue Squadron 3 and 2 are great examples of what gameplay should be like in the next SF

Notice,

-Wingman control (Form up, attack fighters, break etc.)

-Objectives like defend this or that ship

-FREEDOM!!!

Gosh, I miss Metals Arms.  :(  Best game I have played in years!

The few things in a game that I look for to make it be qualified, to me, as a 'good game' would be the following:

-Good SFX

-Great voice acting

-Above Decent graphics

-Screen shaking (Because it brings the realism, in my opinion)

If any, pretty good executions (You know, like Rouge Warrior's executions; minus the fact it was an attrocious game)

-Intense gunfights/fist-fights/dogfights etc. etc.

-Explosions are 'eyecandy' (<----- LOL I just love that word for some reason )

Asper kinda grabbed what i was going to say, but just partially.

I thinking more of a Krystal Spinoff.

Figuring out the answer to the cause her homeworlds destruction, while showing some her backround story along the way.

But the combat should be extremely intense like stronger and more stylish attacks with the staff, explosions, stylish (and possibly sexy) acrobatics's, or possibly around the end of a boss fight the finishing move will send em flying into a building and the thing collapses from the inside upon impact.

similar so it kinda has a feel of the movie FF7 Advent Children to it. if you haven't seen it go get it you'll love it!

but i kind of want a fps with an rpg feel to it, going to different planets to look for clues and information and maybe help people unrelated to the objective along the way. and maybe some rail fights between planets to give it more of a starfox feel to it. and maybe give 2 story modes one for both Krystal and Fox.

Her past has  been boggling in my mind ever since i first started to take an interest in her.

So the truth is long overdue...

EDIT: Plus it would make the critics go nuts, bringing back the momentum to the series.

Well apparently the Bayonetta and Okami director wants Nintendo to let Platinum make a Star Fox game:

I can't really comment since I haven't played Bayonetta or Okami. What do you guys think?

I'm pretty sure he also directed Devil May Cry and Viewtiful Joe.  If Nintendo is going to hand the series off to another 3rd-party developer, this guy just may take the cake! :D

That's cool, but I hope that if he does make a Star Fox game, it isn't M-Rated. The Star Fox franchise belong in the T Rated catagory. I always say for the same thing for every game, "A game only needs to as violent as it needs to be. More blood, gore, sex, and cursing doesn't always equal more fun"

Definitely a good point.  Although I would like to see some moderate language placed in there.  I mean, not expecting seasoned military pilots to swear is like expecting an ice-cream truck to sell tires.

Yeah, it's very vague and all that stuff, but I'm an optimist!

Edit: changed a mistake.

Sorry to be pessimist, but my guess is the referenced article will be about Metroid Other M.

E3 is next month. I do not expect any unannounced game news until then.

No, but that screen shot alone looks awesome!

Also, I wanna personally welcome you back, Pig-Kay, I've missed you!  I'm glad you're back, and I'm glad you found your cat.

The cover story for that issue was on Other M, though.

(sorry for these half-ass scans, btw)

And Nintendo has said that the second half the year will have just as strong of a lineup as the first..

We all benefit if we can keep a pretty steady pace, so the development teams have worked hard to make sure that we’ve got a full lineup this year. If you compare the first half of 2010 with the first half of 2009, it’s night and day. And from some of the things that Mr. Iwata has talked about, and that we will talk about at E3, like Zelda, you know that we’re going to have a good back half of the year, as well.

Nintendo finished 2009 with a bang, and we're continuing our momentum into 2010. With Nintendo DSi XL, Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Metroid: Other M coming in the first six months of the year, we're making sure all our fans have great game content to enjoy year-round.

Not gonna get my hopes up, though. They've made these promises before..

edit~ thanks Julius!
