Opinions on Mature Subjects

I think specific areas for political talk is ok, but in the opinion of a younger user, I think that a restricted section based on age makes the site feel a little "You shouldn't be here." I've felt as if I shouldn't be on a site at all if it has some mature art. (Deviant Art, FurAffinity) If anything, you could have some kind of little block tags you put that require double checking when under 18, honestly, I don't see why we need a NSFW thread because I steer clear of anything labeled so with valid reasons on why it is.  I fully support political chat (My opinions in such topics strike people by surprise because of my age, don't you love those developmental disabilities?)

I don't understand fear of mature topics.  I mean, it's not like it's going to be real naughty - at least, not too naughty.  If anything, it reflects the demographics the Star Fox fandom already has.  I think an age-limited NSFW board is a fabulous idea.

(Random anecdote time:  When I was a child, growing up out on the remote island in the Pacific, there was a really cool video arcade with all the best games in it.  And you had to be at least 18 to get access.  It was mostly adults who frequented the arcade, and they didn't like having kids around.  And if there was an arcade game that wasn't popular there anymore, they'd move the machine to the local youth center (which at any given time never had more than four or five machines).)

I've found it's an old tired social cliche, especially in the United States - "video games are for kids".  Yes, some of the people who play them are kids, but not all of them are, and many are fully-grown adults.  Now more than ever, a huge proportion of gamers are adults, as old as their 20s and 30s.  I mean, Adult Swim shows like Robot Chicken parody popular video games all the time. X3 And then there's vgcats...  The 2007 strip at the bottom was so famous that everyone I knew knew about it - even people who don't read vgcats.

Anyway, I'm not actually really into Robot Chicken-style adult humor, myself.  Though stuff like that is for mature audiences, it never struck me as all that mature. X3 But it seemed like a good example of what exists and is fairly well-known.  Personally, I'm still focused on the fine arts.

I like how your argument to ban religious discussions involves moral and religious absolute statements.

You don't have to talk about religion for moral discussion to get out of hand. The exact same thing goes for politics, environmentalism, business, and any number of non-Star Fox subjects. Heck, even some Star Fox discussions get out of hand, but at least that kind of the point of this forum.

Um... Sorry Mr. Krystal, I am not very well at explaining

stuff, it seems. I said that mostly because of personall

experience. I mean, I like to talk about distant beliefs

and such - I mean, what does the regular Chinesse folk

believe in?... It is quite interesting. But when I tried to talk

to people that way, they either went into "I am Catholic and

there is only one God" or "What are you, a Muslim?"... Duh.

Maybe it is possible that, with the proper regulations, religious

talk is also possible.

How about a name change for the third one. I think the NSFW scares people because of the association of that term with porn. It's going to be "Rated R" type content, not "Rated NC-17" type content. It's not gonna be a yiff board.

How about "Viewer Discretion Advised" instead?

Politics, Philosophy, and Religion (PPR) are not as volatile as you think when rules are established. OCRemix has a PPR board, and it doesn't spread crap out, and OCR is like 50 times our size. Plus, as I said earlier, I'll be on the board practically all the time. Flame wars will get nipped in the bud. Of course, it would be opt-in as well. If you don't want to see those threads, you wouldn't have to.

I also think there is a misunderstanding about the second board. All it is is a General Discussion board without things like this: http://forums.starfox-online.net/index.php?topic=6343.0 (1st two replies)

I think that is okay... I think I like the term "Serious talk"

rather than "Mature talk"... Althrough they pretty much mean

the same - I think.

Supremacy and intolerance would not be tolerated. Anyone who makes posts like that would lose their mature board privileges.

LOL at "intolerance would not be tolerated." Does this mean you will ban yourself from the mature board when you ban someone for having a belief set that is inherently intolerant?

Almost everything is relative. :/

I speak from personal experience too. I have never experienced a meaningful, deep religious (or any other kind of volatile subject matter) discussion on the internet UNLESS all involved deeply cared about each other. Frankly, the people here don't care THAT much about each other.

Splitting hairs much? If it helps, I was mainly referring to bigotry. If someone has a belief set rooted in bigotry, then they need to tread carefully. I won't ban someone just because they're a neo-Nazi, but if they start posting swastikas and saying "death to the Jews" there will be a problem.

The key is regulation. As someone who would frequent a PPR board, I would make sure it doesn't get out of hand. We're also filling the second mod position.

How about ...we implement the first board (the more mature one, not the religion/politics/etc) first and see how it goes, if we see it works, we could implement the next one,  and so on.

Good idea

Something tells me this whole thing isn't going to work out too well :)

Here's another example of something I might post on a mature board.  Nothing explicit, but it is most definitely a mature theme.

IIRC, Ayato drew these pages a year apart.  His artistic technique improved remarkably during that period.

I've been looking at this for a while, and I for would kind of like to have a board where there could be serious discussion. I think the word "mature", sets of alarm bells for people because people link it too much to pornography and dirty talk.

Considering that this would be a thread on deep and meaningful discussions on serious subjects, there would be a few arguments of course, but if we had a few experienced mods to handle the situations, we could keep it from getting out of hand. Though I know we don't have mods available to handle that, if this board idea wants to go through, then the mods should be appointed to do so. And I agree that if one person is causing a particular amount of trouble, they should be removed. And one thing that should be understood is that if you don't want to accept the invitation to join in on the threads, then don't do it. If your not involved directly in the discussion, it's not hurting you in any way, and you shouldn't have to worry about the decisions that the other members make. That affects them, not you.

As for the art thread idea, I honestly find nothing wrong with artistic nudity, I do not think that pictures of people doing the dirty deed just for the sake of doing it should be allowed at all. If you want to see things of that nature, you can use your own time to go to a site dedicated to that sort of thing, what you do is your own business, just don't bring it to a place where people are offended by it.

*sigh*

Sorry, DZ. I don't believe it. Saying regulation is the key to keeping mature discussions in check is like saying horses are the key to herding cats. Even if you're right, it's going to be a painful, frustrating experience.

While there is definitely a more positive response to the idea this time around, there still is significant resistance to the idea. Enough that I cannot make a definitive decision at the moment.

I am going to back-burner this idea for now and revisit it later. I have to give it some more thought on implementation and naming, as the last thing I want to do is create a rift in the community.

Not to mention the fact that we have more pressing issues to deal with right now, IE finding an RP mod.

honestly I'm not against artiscit nudity like ' The Thinker'  it's just the potential that it migh escalte to porn and yiff.

I also want to clarify. If the decision was, or is, to create a mature section or whatever, though I strongly oppose, I won't leave or complain about it once the decision has been made. It's not up to me, and I follow the will of the community on these things within reason.

We'll come back to this issue once we deal with the other ones we have.
