Governments make too much money on tax revenue from the sale of tobacco to make it illegal, which is then offset by added health care costs :/

Lose lose situation :(

When it was illegal back then a lot of times the Prohibition law wasn't even enforced, many people back then considered it a stupid law to begin with and everything was done underground and many times police were bribed to turn a blind eye to what was going on.

Mega: Governments look like criminals now. They still let people sell cigarettes, which they know are deadly, plus, they even put a warning that cigarette smoking is dangerous for your health. I mean, why sell these things if they'll put a warning that it's dangerous. Plus, they know many people will buy it. They're stupid money-hungry.... AAAAARRRRGGGHHH!!!!

Steve: Calm down...

If they outlaw it completely the level of underground activity will rise and people will start selling 2nd grade "illegal" cigarettes which in most cases are worse for your health than formerly "legal" ones.  I don't know about down in the states but in Canada cigarettes made on native reserves and sold illegally (i.e. no excise tax paid) are often of a much more "digesting" quality.

In short, the problem will still be there, no extra revenue for the government, and it will cause a whole bunch more problems, like added cost of police to enforce the new law.

That is debatable... If goverments

were more strict, or punitive towards

drug-dealing it will start to drop...

...However, I do not want to get another

thread locked. I suggest we get back

On-Topic is that is still possible.

just like the former ban of aclohol it would make things worse then it would do any better.

Besides at least they're going to raise the taxes, so for once it sort of a win win.
