Sabre
Often people amaze me with their level of dumb, from people who think cars have autopilot to massive leaps in logic.Today I was chatting to a guy online when he came up with the idea he was a superior gamer in modern and sci-fi themed multiplayer shooters because he practiced on WW2 shooters. His rational being that, because he is trained to be a good shot with a crappy ww2 weapons, his skills with the better modern weapons will be greater then the average player because he could match them on the score board with worse weapons. However, because those other players will know how the lazer guns or modern weapons perform and are used to using them, all his WW2 experience will be for nothing. He also assumes all game skills are transferable, so if you're good at gran tourismo, you must be better at the simpler mario kart right? Of course, trying explain this is like trying to take down a brick wall using only your face.
Guest DRL
Often people amaze me with their level of dumb, from people who think cars have autopilot to massive leaps in logic. That made mo go ROFL...Because sadly, it is TRUE,and people like that DO exist...He also assumes all game skills are transferable, so if you're good at gran tourismo, you must be better at the simpler mario kart right? Matrilwood
Actually, skills are transferable to a certain degree. While being good at GTA will not garantee you will be good at Mario Kart, if your a good shot in any FPS you will have the right skill base to learn how to be a good shot in another, while the weapons etc will vary dramatically. Shredding it down to its basic elements; pointing at a remarkably lifelike human shape and left clicking is pointing at a remarkably lifelike human shape and clicking, regardless of whether the polygon at the bottom of the screen looks like a WWII German Sturmgewehr 44, or a WWIII Allied Hyper-Cannon. While experience in a certain game isn't directly transable to skills in another within the same, basic genre, they often require the same abilities. To perform well in a shooting game, regardless of type, one has to have quick reflexes, accuracy in how your fingers manipulate the controller just right to get the desired output, the ability to perform tactical thinking, to be able to seperate threats from things which are not. And someone who have a lot of experience in these fields, will most often perform quite well when they get accustomed to the small details which separate the various shooting games from each other. However, the first sentence of Sabre's post is sadly all to true. Over the years, it has become more and more clear to me that it's pretty much impossible to underestimate the human brains capacity to stupidity and ignorance. Vy'drach
Two quotes come to mind: 1, "The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits," 2, "Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large numbers."As for skill passing from game to game, some things do. Like Matrilwood said, skill in one FPS makes it much easier to get good at another FPS. I used to play AVP 2, with its expansion, and that game got you very good at seeing motion, since the Aliens could be a pain to see at times, and the Predator's cloak was much much better in the expansion than the actual cloak from the movie, so it was a "see them or die" thing. The ability to see motion well crossed over into other games, and while I am not as good as I was in AVP 2, I still tend to see motion better than most people I encounter in games. DZComposer
Actually, the mechanics of an FPS are more relevant to transferability of skill than the stopping power or accuracy of the weapons. Yes, someone who was good at Battlefield 1942 likely won't do so well in Quake3 at first, but a lot of that is due to the differences in gameplay other than the guns. Quake 3 is a very very fast game, while BF1942 was not. If you're used to slower-pased FPSes, you will get clobbered in a fast-paced one.The basics of an FPS, however, tend to be the same across games, so if you're good at one, you can adapt to others more than someone who is not experienced in FPS games.Probably one reason why people who play games with weaker weapons who think they can master the battlefield with the weaker weapons of games with stronger weapons fail is due to weapon balance. Weak weapons are weak for a reason, and continual reliance on them will only lead to failure.
Kursed
although for certain genre it's not the case for instance age of empires i can play very very well and command and conquer generals or any in that series for that matter i can also play fairly well however Stacraft I cannot play well.In reply to what Dz Said in halo I use just about every weapon possible ,however I avoid the major use of the stronger power weapons (Sniper,Spartan laser,Rocket, Fuel rod...etc unless i need to use them
Sabre
Since various people brought it up, the idea of being good at aiming is not very transferable. Differences in aim and movment speed, recoil, accuracy, iron sights, field of view, responce time of the weapons, bullet speed ect.Knowing FPS tactics and stratagies is fine, but we're talking about someone who believes that he can lean on his twitch shooting skills. If you know a FPS and know how to learn the guns, it takes next to no time to learn how the guns in the next game behave, and adapt accordingly. You just need to see the rate of climb, bullet speed, stopping power, and how many rounds your clip holds/how fast it empties. Maybe a few other things, but it isn't rocket science, takes very little time to adapt to the new guns.
CrypticQuery
Certain FPS's transfer over to other FPS's, while others don't at all! Case in point, MW2 and BFBC2. Bad Company 2 has gravity effecting long range shots and rockets, and MW2 is just point and shoot.

That is true, but only the sniper drops with range in BC2, and you can still get better at BC2 sniping with MW2. You still need a target on the correct point of the X-axis in MW2, so all you have to do is learn the correct Y-axis. While MW2 to BC2 may not be the easiest transition, if all you've played for a FPS before is MW2, you'll be better off than if you never played a FPS before. Star Fox Runner
I don't think skill sets are completely transferable. While most FPS games have the same core basics, there are always little tweaks that make things different. Plus most games will have some freaky weapons that can do some things that other games don't do, so you'll have to learn how to deal with it. So the trick is learning other games' tweaks and adapting to them.

An American was angery when he learned of the steriotype that all american are fat and stupid, and asked people not to judge on steriotypes. Fair point. 20 minutes later he's basing his opinion of other cultures on steriotypes with the claim steriotypes exist for a reason. :banghead:

Tiberius
Shooting skill is never universal. The user must be flexible and be able to adapt accordingly to the new gameplay. Like switching guns every once in a while. That's what I do. When I suck with the M164A, I switch to the F2000.

Matrilwood
Here's a relevant quote.A man is smart, a man is rational.People are stupid, people make stupid decisions. You can read this in 2 ways, 1. Girls make men stupid. 2. An individual is capable of using reason and logic, but when you get a whole heap of these "men" into a group they become a mass of mindless idiots. Both of which are true.
