CrypticQuery
Old School beats the shit outta new school, throws it out the window, runs it over with a Semi, sets it on fire, bombs it, and then uses it as toilet paper. NUFF SAID!

Guest DRL
Put an "In-Between" option and you have my vote.I'm an appreciator of many things, including both old and new. Both of these ^.I like some stuff from New Skool, and some things from Old School. To be honest, there are some good new games. And some very bad old games as well.Remember the ET game, and God of War.The first is Old-School. Anything that youhad to do to make an HORRIBLE-EPIC FAIL game was done here. And the later is the worst of New School.Pure graphics, violence, lots of blood,dismembering... Ect.So I say something In-Between. Some old Gamessuch as StarFlight were EPIC. And SF64 I consider itto be at the beggining of New School, was AWE-[shadow=white,left]HYPER[/shadow]-EPIC. Milkyway64
Both eras have their gems and crap, both gameplaywise, concept, and musically.I'm more inclined toward old school, but denying their isn't some truly brilliant games out today is foolish. Robert Monroe
Why is Nintendo 64 and Playstation "old" school? Hell, last generation it was "new" school, and the old school consoles included the Atari 2600.So yeah. There will always be suck and win, and it is not defined by "schools". There will always be suck and win, and it is not defined by "schools".Younger members will more likely consider those two systems old school, where I consider NES and SNES old school, and yes I love my Atari 2600 :P
Milkyway64
What defines oldschool for me is the line between the 2D and 3D era.
Sabre
I'm new school 100% without nostalgia, most old game crumble. Just today I had a guy accuse my of being a kid who only plays easy games because I didn't like stalker. I'm 24 and have finished battletoads. Yep, skills.Modern 'hand holding' and 'easyness' is more of a case 'better explaination' and 'fair gameplay design'. The problem with most old games is they were hard because they were either broke or poorly made. There is a myth that games are getting shorts, but most old games can be finished in under an hour assuming you don't keep dying.

There is a myth that games are getting shorts, but most old games can be finished in under an hour assuming you don't keep dying. There is some truth in this. With constant dying I found myself beating NES Metal Gear in 5 hours, which is about as long as any MGS takes me if I watch the cutscenes (or skip them in Snake Eater's case). But there is also some falsesity. Older games were long with such genres as adventures and RPGs. Nowadays, most adventures are dead and RPGs haven't really changed much. Older games also had artificial replay value in the form of COLLECTIBLES, which was especially true in the N64/PS1 era, which we don't see anymore usually. looking a you Assassin's Creed

Robert Monroe
Newer games seem to aim toward realism, I play games to escape realism...Because nothing says "realism" like getting shot 20 times and brushing it off with a single first aid kit.
