I did not even notice he

had those beads.

on me now  :facepalm:.

Hehe, I'm in the same sinking boat! I never noticed them, I played all of the games (except StarFox2) and read some of the comics, and I never noticed it :D.  I don't really mind, although I do think he looks a little better without them.  They may also be a combat impediment, you could possibly get them stuck on something, or they could block visibility if shaking around :D.
