In this topic for example I really hope that it doesn't head down that path.  I don't see why it's so difficult for people to act rationally, even when it comes to controversial topics.

I don't know about the other mods/admins here, but personally I'm thinking that feedback concerning why topics are/aren't being locked more then they should is a valid topic for constructive conversation and unless the topic tailspins into something that everyone and their dog could see can't be saved then I fail to see any point in locking this topic prematurely. :/

I have three ideas on why more topics are getting locked:

1. The topics other people make turn into political, just like how DZ says it

2. Some topics have the 'seeking attention' mix to it, something like that

3. Some posts go waaaaay off-topic, sometimes causing flamewars.

Discussion is how people arrive at conclusions. Yes, some people are gonna get upset. Yes, someone will inevitibly get butthurt. But thats how people roll, and people can arrive to peaceable conclusions and understanding. However, they never will reach that if the mods go "NO U" everytime someone gets a LITTLE upset and locks a topic. Drama is bad, I agree, because people who make shitstorms over internet fights need to relax and re-evaluate whats important in their lives.

However, I will disagree with you somewhat on my debating methods. Unlikable? Maybe. Some people love my debate form. Thats subjective. Rudeness? Sometimes, but there is a time and a place for it, alongside tact. Flaming? No, flaming is making personal attacks against people, it is internet ad-homimnem, and I do not abide by such. I do challenge people for their thoughts, but I do so on a basis of logic and fact. I do not feel my own beleifs are "sacred", I welcome any attack against them one might want to make, but do know I will defend them. Derailing topics I'll admit has happened, but 1: its not entirely on purpose 2: its in good fun 3: I try to get back on topic. I am not "nasty", not in my own eyes. If people has beefs with me, they can PM me. Otherwise... I can't adjust, because I don't know who wants what.

Peace and tranquility is fine. However, it can be maintained without the website being sterile. I approve of a peaceful place for people to discuss things. I always approve of the people here to be wise enough not to get bent out of shape over discussions. Friendly, peaceful debate and discussion is what I aspire for.

As for going to other sites, they suck. I might be a scoundrel on this board, but I will say I like it. Its nostalgic, somehow, and I like this.

It's not me who you'll have to defend your case for Robert. And it wasn't only in regards to topics getting locked I was talking about. I've been thinking over how to grasp this problem for some days now, and this topic gave me an opportunity to do just that. I could have done this over PM with you, but I'm rather for an open discussion where everyone can give their 0.02$.

One of the reasons it appears like there are more locks recently is that we are in a period of transition. We've created some new boards, the ownership situation has changed, etc.

A lot of stuff has been, is being, and will be moved around a bit, and the way SMF handles move is that it creates a new thread with a link to the old one in it's new place, and then locks it.

Also, our membership has grown. The more threads we have, the more will be locked due to the simple statistics that come with a such an increase.

We have more staff now. The more eyes watching, the less likely it is for things to slip through the cracks.

Also, in a transition period, there will always be some drama. It is unavoidable. Threads are locked to prevent drama from getting out of hand.

Discussion is fine. Sometimes, though, a discussion can get a little heated, and it is necessary for someone to step in and throw water on the situation.

I'll agree with you when it comes to some of the image posts, posts containing swear words, and more "complicated" posts that a good majority of people might not completely understand unless they have a bit more of a mature mentality and/or are older or smarter.  That being said however, and this is just my opinion, the onus should not fall completely on the poster to ensure what he is saying is understandable by everyone - mainly because, there is a thing called common sense which everyone possesses to a certain degree.  I (and I'm sure others) do not like to have to write my opinions on something at a third grade level so everyone on this forum can comprehend my viewpoint.  Thus I do believe that a certain "maturity level" should be required in every single post on this forum.  I've seen a lot of posts that not only horribly fail at spelling/grammar, but are damn near impossible for some members to even make out what they are saying.  Thus, I feel that I shouldn't have to cater to others whims and dumb down my posts to a level that people with a tiny minuscule of common sense should be able to get.  It's simply unfair to me whereas I feel that other people on this forum (even 13 years olds) should do their part as well and act a bit better.

This all being said, maybe a line should be drawn?  I'm sure some of us are willing to make concessions, I know I am.

Goofy Movie demotivational was a half-joke I threw at someone saying "Krystal hates Slippy". They wereobviously trolling, so I just counter-trolled. With macros.

I've already addressed the "I'm the GM" image. That was moreso a misunderstanding of the nature of my use of the image than anything else.

I don't see the problem with my post about Bruce Lee. He could do pushups with his thumb and kicked all ass and if someone is butthurt about the facts then they can just cry some moar.

Top hat was in a joking topic derailment about Slippy. And said topic is back on topic, so its all fine. And Slippy's top hat IS pretty sweet.

Apache pistol has remained civil discussion with the man who brought it up.

The last two about Krystal though... thats about as close to insulting as I'll get without actually INSULTING anyone. Its ridiculous conversations about politics and religion are so heavily watched and locked at the nearest sign of tensions, but we can make over 9000 bullshit polls about the various things Krystal will NEVER EVER DO.

If teenage boys are upset because they misread my posts and took it as a personal offense, then they need to tell me damn well about it so I can adjust my posting style. I am very adjustable, but I can't adjust if I don't know whos mad about what.

That's a thing you should consider especially. While mild profanity is allowed, and only the one in the Goofy D-poster is really sensored, one shouldn't use it unnecesary.

I'm really glad however, that you seem to be willing to take this to heart. The reason why people haven't come directly to you and asked you to retract your spikes is quite simple really. As new as you are on the forum, many people don't know you well, and you might come of as worse than you are.

It's as if one's just a small kid, and have to remind the big, bald biker with thousands of tattoos, who's standing in the door, cursing and throwing insults to his mates while smoking a sigarette, that smoking's not allowed in that building.

Is he going to laugh me in the face, kick my ass and continue? Or is he going to stump his sigarette and mumble an appology?

I can change my style some. Be less.... biting in my humor However, I wouldn't mind it if people could be more thick-skinned some, too.
