SFO Source game server(s)?

DZComposer

Recommended Posts

Having a source game server was brought-up the other day. I'm willing to look into options for setting at least one up, but it would require additional financial investment of up to $50 a month.

Before I drop any money, I need to know if the server(s) would be used.

Servers would likely be set up with sourcemod and HLStatsX CE.

I recommend a company called EscapedTurkey. $15 a month and a choice of tons of games.

I have one and it's unused - maybe use that one?

Cheap is good, but I value reliability more. Are their servers reliable?

I have had them for about 5 months now. The people in my rtcw clan who have been on the server loved it - it was smooth and reliable. FYI -  they restart the servers each morning for reliability.

Hmm... So far the response is not making it look worth it.

I say we should first get the clan idea...

Uh, 'out there'. Once it has proven effective

(if it succeds, I mean) then we should try

to get a game server, considering we get a fair

amount of online players.

I say we try the clan idea first.

I have 5 people willing to play TF2 on an SFO server. While a lot of the people that would end up on it will be just generic pubbers, servers that are empty don't get joined by them. It's a catch-22. Thus, we need enough people to seed the server. I'm not sure 5 is enough. :/

But, there are plenty of servers out there that do things like that stupid rtd mod that I have seen allow medics to stand and ubersaw a level 3 sentry without taking any damage and resist airblasting. That's a load of crap. So, a server without gameplay mods may do well. I just don't know.

As a question to those who have voted, what do you want to see?

Quake sounds? If yes, Custom Quake Sounds?

Instant Respawn?

votescramble?

Alltalk?

3rd-party Maps? (I'd like to see this map on a TF2 server:

It's 2fort altered to make it harder to turtle)

Map voting?

SFO Forum member benefits (reserved slot, can't die after round)?

I'm "willing" to buy TF2 if there's a nice amount of people to play with. And as long as the community stands there for a while too, I don't want to get hooked up into a game just to see it die in one month.

And what about Counter Strike - Source?

I have it, it is far AWEcooler than Non-Source

version, and it is relatively easy to set up custom

maps.

Now that we are on it, yes, custom maps are a good

idea.

Member benefits... Would like to, but not sure how to

implement it. I mean, I do not have TF2. So what if a

random guy nicknamed DRL appears and you give it

member benefits?

An IP check would be more than enough to prove your membership, that or maybe implementing a password authentication service to provide such benefits.

IP check... USB modem = Dynamic IP.

Password autentication... Could be.

Yeah, I go for that one. Maybe the autentication

takes place via a PM in the forum?

Garry's mod seems like cool.

Maybe we can make and SF-O

map for it, with Star Fox fan stuff

around.

There's quite a bit, but not alot. I've heard of something called farm server's, which work like ordanary dedicated server's only someone else keeps them up, and the money should be to them, I've been thinking of doing that myself but i need to look into it first

I'm not completely opposed to running both a Gmod server and a TF2 server, but we'll have to see. That is if the Gmod dedicated server is out for Linux as I heard it was still in the "planned" category. Any server I rent will be running Linux.

I forgot about CS:S. I'll add it to the poll. Hit "Remove Vote" to vote again.

Benefits are tied to your SteamID (mine, for example: STEAM_0:1:25513774). You could change your name and you would still get them.

option before, so now I choosed CS:S too.

CSS has a lot more addons for servers such as custom models and such which would be nice for members.

I've consolidated some of my other hosting accounts and freed up enough money to pay for 1 game server! (Yay... Domain transfers... )

If I go with the company Simon recommended, I may be able to stretch for 2 servers.

If I had to stick with one, it looks like it would be TF2.

With two, it would be TF2 and GMod or Goldeneye. And advantage of Goldeneye is that there are not a lot of servers for it right now, so attention may be attracted to it. I have to see if that company would let me host them, though, as neither are currently on their list.

Its at least 10 percent more complex then that. Sometimes you have to pres jump.

Seriously though. Pyro and engie are my classes.

My tip if you want to learn TF fast. Pick a 2fort only server, and pick one class per round, and stick with it to the end. Do them in order. As a rule, demo man and engie need knowlage of the maps, and spy needs a knowlage of all the classes.

I would argue that an effective pyro needs map knowledge as well. Pyro is most effective as an ambush class. W + M1 jokes aside, a skilled pyro that knows how to airblast and use the axestinguisher is a force to be reckoned with. Add the recent changes to the flare gun (full crits at medium to long range), and Pyro can be deadly at range in the hands of the right player.

Spy needs map knowledge as well, especially if you use the regular invisibility watch.

A great way to learn how to use weapons without the annoyance of getting pwnd why trying to learn how to use them, and still have something to shoot at, is to use the tr_walkway map, which you can get here: http://www.fpsbanana.com/maps/107794
