I find this extremely backwards, and it annoys me alot. It's such a dumb, savage idea. I was talking to an american friend of mine and he didn't get it either. We also couldn't work out this goal of most males to have sex with a virgin. Why?

The concept of losing your virginity as soon as you can is just dumb.  For some people, including myself it's not something to be taken lightly.  I lost mine when I was 25 and I've regretted it since.  I'd personally have rather waited until I was married or something.

It was in old episodes of podcast 17, there is one guy who is a real git, for example, he wrote a card to his GF that said "Happy birthday bitch" or similar. He was on about halfquake, which was a remake of quake in Half Life 1. When asked to explain it for listeners who might not have heard of it, he replied with what I said in the original post. It really wound me up. This isnt the first time of course. 40 year old vigin and shallow hal also had me kicking off at the concept.

Having sex is a way, albeit stupid, to gauge your success as a man.

Mostly the subject of still having your virginity is a joke, but sometimes the insecure will use it to put themselves above you. You are never obligated to do it and like anything else it's your choice, but most people who WANT SEX NAO who are also virgins sorta deserve the ridicule, because that shows lack of resolve an unwillingness to put effort into what they want.

Or that they have completely unrealistic standards and can't get their head out of their fantasy world where they bang a model every night. :?

I had put effort into it many times, and failed repeatedly.

It's still not an excuse. Almost anyone can find SOMEONE. If you're failing because you don't look good, then you're focusing in the wrong area. There's an ASSTON of middle to bad looking guys that get wives. It's persistence and the conscious notion to be a good partner that gets you a girlfriend, not looking great (which science says can even turn girls OFF.)

Just got 19 last sunday, and I don't feel any need for getting rid of my virginity anytime soon. That's not going to happen anytime soon either, having just entered a long-distance relationship, and being zealously monogamous, there's probably going to be quite a lot of years before I get to that.

I failed for many reasons other than looks.  I've known for a while to be patient, I'm not a "horndog" who's constantly focusing on getting laid...I'm just depressed at how wasted my life truly is....not just 'cause I'm still a virgin, other reasons, too...no [real] home, no job, no career, no future, no money...nothing to show for my life.

I see. I'm sorry for that, but I still don't think your life was wasted. If you enjoyed your life personally, it has merit. If you were a positive influence in someone's life whatsoever, you've hit a degree of success. Money and jobs only carry you so far.

It's just all overrated , thanks to the social push ups people like to do. You don't get more powerlevels if you lose it, nor do you get better looks, money or more friends. It's just something you decide to do whenever the right time comes up, bragging about losing it just plain demonstrates the immaturity of teenagers.

Not to mention the media blows it way out of proportion.  I'm going to have to agree, it's fun and all but it's not the primary factor that makes a person happy in a relationship by any means.
