Official SF-O TF2 Server (DEPRECATED)

I won't be there next week on account of being in a hotel room Friday night, and on an Amtrak train Sunday night.

Hotel internet is no good for online games, and there is no internet on Amtrak's Superliner trains , and even if there was, it would probably be no good for gaming.

I know some flights nowadays have Wi-fi on them. I wonder if it would be possible to play TF2 while at an attitude of 30,000+ feet? Doubtful. :/

You could damage your hard drive doing so, though. The disc relies on an air cushion to keep the head above the disc, and without that cushion, the head could pontentially erase quite a bit of data on the disk.

As for Hotel Wi-Fi, I've actually found that it's not that bad, in fact, I've played one of our TF2 matches on it and it worked just fine.

How exactly would it get damaged though, since the cabin is like...99% pressurized? Using that logic no one would be using their computers on an airport period. :/

Hard drives require an air cushion to float the recording head. Without the proper air density, the head could potentially fall and contact the disk. Most hard drives are rated to around 10,000 feet for operation, and about 40,000 powered off. But you are right, most airplane cabins are pressurized, which would mean that the laptop would remain operational, depending on the altitude of the plane. Also, remember that air pressure decreases moderately on ascent and increases on descent, which just goes to show that the cabin isn't pressurized entirely, but enough so that humans can breathe easily.

Wikipedia quote:

"Due to the extremely close spacing between the heads and the disk surface, hard disk drives are vulnerable to being damaged by a head crash—a failure of the disk in which the head scrapes across the platter surface, often grinding away the thin magnetic film and causing data loss. Head crashes can be caused by electronic failure, a sudden power failure, physical shock, contamination of the drive's internal enclosure, wear and tear, corrosion, or poorly manufactured platters and heads.

The HDD's spindle system relies on air pressure inside the disk enclosure to support the heads at their proper flying height while the disk rotates. Hard disk drives require a certain range of air pressures in order to operate properly. The connection to the external environment and pressure occurs through a small hole in the enclosure (about 0.5 mm in breadth), usually with a filter on the inside (the breather filter). If the air pressure is too low, then there is not enough lift for the flying head, so the head gets too close to the disk, and there is a risk of head crashes and data loss. Specially manufactured sealed and pressurized disks are needed for reliable high-altitude operation, above about 3,000 m (10,000 feet)"

I'm just saying I've been on dozens of flights and I've never heard this warning about laptops or seen people NOT using them on a longer flight. Anyways, I've never been on a flight that at it's cruising attitude as surpassed 40,000 feet. Most of the time it's been in the high 30,000's. The risk is virtually nil in any case.

Here's another "risk" that there's actually a law off of. There is a law that requires all passengers to turn off all electronic devices while taking off and during the latter stages of the landing process but they are allowed to be on (in airplane mode with no signal emitting form them) a few minutes or so after take off. The law is silly IMO because the risk that's involved in actually having your device on and emitting signals the entire flight, including before takoff and after landing are so minuscule and it's been proven that airplane communications are virtually unaffected by these signals in the 21st century.

I'm interested about a Thursday game, as Friday and Sunday games usually suck for me cause i always work those days.

A word of warning: I cannot guarantee that I can get the server updated by Friday's game if Valve drops an update while I am gone.

It's a good thing you added the pistol whipping part afterwards, otherwise I would have said something bluntly like "I feel sorry for you". :)

Come and visit? :P

Tonight was great! I discovered the Sniper class is the best one for me…finally. I actually did fairly well.

Fureox owns the record for most headshots…I'm considering beating him. (Or at least top 5)

User, Milky, all I can say is, next time…revenge!!

It was a good night, I suppose. People did leave early, but while we were all there it was getting pretty fun.

Up to 73 headshots! I seriously am aiming for your top spot, Fureox. ;)
