To those without a gaydar (or who don't know what it is), I'll explain it.

Gaydar is a phenomenon where someone has a strongly intuitive sense of whether someone else is gay or straight.  Both gay and straight people can have gaydar, as it's largely a lifetime's accumulation of common wisdom and human observation, as well as a degree of cold reading.  Gaydar can be strong even in people who are fairly young (for instance, Madonna's daughter when she was young).

Contrary to stereotype, it is not necessarily a means by which gay people seek out other gay people - gaydar can feel as much as a primary sense as the normal five senses, and a "blip" on your sufficiently sharp gaydar can even arrive unexpectedly like an epiphany.  It is also not necessarily a simple sense of "Oh, he looks gay" - it's a lot subtler and deeper than that.  So stereotypes can't be (and really shouldn't be) relied on. Gaydar is also not necessarily a profiling method, not just because it doesn't really rely on stereotypes, but also because it may not always be something you care to note even if you notice it, and even then it can be purely for personal senses without discriminatory intent or effect.  ("Just because I can see ghosts doesn't mean I believe in them." - quote from Bleach)

Not everyone has a well-developed gaydar.  So I want to satisfy my statistical curiosities. :3 For gaydar and lesdar each, there are three options:

  • Sharp.  It is fairly reliable with a small margin of human error.
  • Imperfect.  It is right significantly more often than it is wrong, but it is still wrong a good amount of the time.
  • Unreliable.  Right 50% or less of the time - basically, no gaydar at all - random guessing without ever being significantly more right than wrong.

As for myself, my own gaydar tends to be sharp, but my lesdar is unreliable.  My gaydar has been fairly sharp since I was at least 13, but I tried not to make decisions on it until I was older, and was surprised at how sharp it had already been.  I mean, don't you ever just...know something, as if it were staring you in the face, and find you were correct?

And Sabre, I'm pretty sure this isn't against the rules.  Don't sweat it. :3

Gaydar is sharp; Lesdar is imperfect, but I'm harnessing it (what did I say?)

Never actually put much thought into it.

Same, but from my personal experience my gaydar is alright.

Lesbians are naturally harder to find, since their male counterpart normally have easier signs, like voice tone or way to "move" around.

Sometimes true, but don't forget that most gay men are what is called "straight-acting" or Straight Gay - there is very little outwardly unusual about their behavior, so the signs are a lot more subtle. :3 Generally, if someone is straight-gay and a stranger, it can be hard for someone even with a good gaydar to tell, unless you get to better know their personality, their interests, their moods, etc.

Unrealiable? That is not enought for me.

"Completely Unexistant" could be right for it.

To be honest, if you were gay/lesbian and did not

mention it, then I would never find out myself.

Uh no, one's "gaydar" is not their sense of being able to identify gay or lesbian people, when someone says something like "my gaydar is beeping" they simply mean it as a joke to show that they think a person is gay. I don't know how you came up with such a complex theory but it's much more simple.

While it's true that it can be used as a joke, it's not just used ONLY as a joke.  Many of Dermont's points are valid.

It's not really a joke to everyone - it's just that there's no better word for it most of the time.

Unrealiable effectively is nonexistent.  See, imagine you're flipping a coin.  Any guess you make would have a 50/50 chance of being right.  When you're reduced to just random guessing of things, it's the same as not having a sense for it at all.

But in my case, I would just stare at coin.

If you asked me to 'decide', I would say...

"Er... Uh..." Like I have done before.

The coin would stop moving before I even

say "maybe it could be..."

Interesting approach. XD And if you still weren't looking at it, and eventually did make a decision, how likely would it be to be right? :P

Eh  :P they are just easier to spot nowadays, now that it's considered normal in almost everywhere, gay folks don't need to hide themselfs and they ...well, literally voice their orientation.

Dude. What the hell are you doing? Seriously, stop going on about gay steriotypes. You're gay, we get it, no one cares. Stop trying to force it down our throats.

Are you sure you are not overreacting with this  O_o?, he's not breaking any of the new rules we set up for this kind of stuff. I'm in fact aware of the situation and will do the proper locking if any topic that breaks said rules appears. I'd advice you to step out the topic if you find it annoying before things get rough here. As a matter of fact, I haven't gotten any pms related about the nature of this topic, so you are the only one annoyed. Unless I'm mistaken, of course, in which, I guess, I'll have to take action.

I'm not so much annoyed with the topic as I am the number of topics like it. He's better here recently, but it seems like the guy has no other hobbies or interests to share with us. Just SNES StarFox, his sexuality(which extends to his sig, making it impossible for those who wanna avoid it to actually avoid it in any topics he posts in I might add), and... cookies.

I'm going to have to second this to an extent.  He does bring it up a fair bit in everyday posting conversation, and it does seem to be a lot of what he talks about at times although I've personally been trying to pressure him to diversity a bit more with his topics/posts :P
