Where did the furry stereotype come from?

Well, I was talking to somebody at work, and mentioned my ex girlfriend, she was the one who got me into this, first thing she said when I said "Furry" was "Like that episode of CSI?"

I like that episode personally, I had forgotten about it until I met her though, and I mentioned how it isn't always about sex, she didn't think so, she is the kind of person who has a superpower, common sense, she knows how TV shows will be to get ratings, and blah blah blah

But seriously, where did the stereotype come from? It can't just be from a couple episodes of various TV shows and a few websites

That episode creeped me right the heck out and made me mad. It made all the furries look like perverts and weirdos. Sure there are some furries that are atracted to anthros, but I think they took it too far.

The gist comes from 2 places, CSI and Vanity Fair (an american magazine)

Both rely on shock value, so weird kinks and groups are turned up to 11. CSI had a guy die from having sex with a fat person in a cubby chaser episode. Gamers played a game, copied it by robbing a bank and 'keep score' of kills, before the ring leader died at his PC because he was to busy playing WoW to go and eat.

Also any sesationist media, magazine, 'documentries' newspapers, ect. All do it. The modern idea of furry comes from these 2 sources, and is maintained by others.

For a history of how the bad image of gamers started, check out gameswipe

The furry stereotype is irrelevant in my life. :3 Back in the 1990s, when there wasn't nearly the stigma that there has since developed, I had all sorts of furry art pinned to my bedroom wall.Ā  My parents thought it was so interesting that they periodically invited guests to see my bedroom wall.Ā  Back then it wasn't something that could taint a job resume, hurt your business or get you fired like it can today.Ā  But I still don't care - I know it's perfectly normal.

When people act like that, I find they acctually like to be offended. I have a friend who is like that. He doesn't really like the boring truth, instead prefering an exciting lie.

I made a thread like this about a year ago. And that CSI episode was brought up then too. That seems to be the greatest influence on the stereotype.

A few of my friends know I'm a furry, they know I'm not part of the stereotype, so they don't say anything about it. Except maybe to get a rise out of me once in a while, but they're just having a little fun there. lol!
