MINI vs Porsche

As you may or may not know, the CEO of MINI USA has challenged the owner of Porsche USA to a race in Atlanta next week. Porsche has, sadly, declined. ):

I for one, have signed the petition to see if we can convince Porsche to reconsider. :) Being a MINI fan, I would love to see how this race turns out.

The two cars racing would be the MINI Cooper hardtop and the Porsche 911. Discuss? I know we have some gearheads in here. :)

Sorry to say, but no matter what Porsche 911 they're talking about (They range from a little over 300, to over 500 HP, RWD or AWD.), with the exception of it being a very old 911, or it being a Go-kart course they compete on, the MINI will be eaten alive.

Shame, cause I'd really like to see the MINI win.

What Asper said and I think Porsche declined because they didn't want to waste their time with such a one sided race... :P

The reason I'd like to see this race is because while the Porsche could easily beat the MINI on the straight course, when it comes to handling turns, the MINI would win every time. There have been non-official races between MINIs and Porsches where the Porsche would be in the lead up until a turn, then the MINI would catch up and smoke the Porsche.

That, and the MINI USA CEO used to be employed by Porsche, and it makes me giggle.

I like Porsches, as off beat as a race like that would be though, I'd love to see it

I love the MINI, it would get it's ass handed to it on a straight-away, but it would DEFINITELY corner better than that Porsche! :D

Minis have been around long enough for people to do outragous things to them. Also, remember when they won all those rallies?

MINI vs Porsche?.......They would both lose to this:

Its too bad Porsche declined to do the race, maybe they were scared they'd lose.

The only way a mustang would defeat a Porsche 911 is if it is a GT500 super snake with 750 bhp stock, otherwise it would be destroyed, but if it came to a race between a GT500 super snake and a 911 the mustang would win easily.

The new Mini isn't very... "mini". Having driven one (although it was just a base model), I have to say that I wasn't very impressed with the handling. That's just me, though. And I've never driven a Porsche.

Did some research, and discovered it was the 911 Carrera S it would be going up against.

The thing about corners you see, is that they come in a variety of shapes and flavours. Laugh.gif They have to be insanely tight, so one have to go round them at walking pace, for the MINI to be able to take the 911 there. Contrary to belief, a new MINI is quite heavy and large really in comparison to its predecessor. Not as "chuckable", and then it looses most of its greatest strenght. It used to be the acrobat of the car world, not anymore. It might weight around 300 kg less than the Carrera, but it has also a higher center of gravity and FWD.

Barely in a straight line. 1/4 times of a little under 12 seconds, which is a teenth or two faster than what the quite basic Carrera S does. As far as track goes, difficult to say. The Mustang improved enourmously in the handlings department during the facelift 2009/2010. But still, it's not going to purely outhandle the Carrera S, even after Saleen did their magic.

And, one can't really compare a tuned car to a stock car anyway.

Barely even in a straight line. The Super Snake only manages around 12.1 on stock tires, which is about the same as the Carrera S. They are to narrow, and have so little grip, it spins away all the power in the first gears.

As far as a worthy opponent for Porsche goes, the only marque that springs me to mind is: "Corvette". Porsche makes it a habit to take their rival cars to their test track, and race them untill they collapse. Sources from within Porsche says that the italian supercars don't last long, and the japanese eventually heat up their brakes so much it lock the wheels. The Corvettes are the only cars that manages to give Porsche a headache there, because they manages to take the punishment they give them and post good lap times, better than the models they compete against it with, as well as being considerable cheaper.
