There are more than the initial four cars, but you have to unlock them through achievements.  (Check GameFAQs for more on this.)  You can unlock the Blue Falcon Mk II and the Stingray (both are nods to the SNES cars), along with other awesome cars.  And unlockable Fire Field and Silence tracks are in the game.  Anyway, there are no returning characters because it's a generation later.

As for why I like it?  I like its SNES feel, I like its music (it has one of the original SNES composers on board), I like some of its tracks, I like the way some of the cars look, I just like the experience overall.  I've sequenced two Maximum Velocity MIDIs (Empyrean Colony and Crater Land).

So play it and pretend its not related to any other F-Zero games and I'll be fine. Good enough then.

Well, the pilot of Blue Falcon Mk II claims to be the son of Captain Falcon.

Anyway, I found myself toying with an idea.  Which of these tracks' scenery most resemble Lylat System worlds?  It would be fun to hack the ROM again and rename these tracks plausibly. :P

Bianca City is a large metropolis, having completely replaced Mute City in importance.

Stark Farm is failed farmland that has become barren and deserted.

Laputan Colony ("Empyrean Colony" in the 2001 localization) is a desert world that has recently started being colonized.

Cloud Carpet is a world completely covered with thick white cloud cover.

East Ten Side ("Tenth Zone East" in the 2001 localization) is a heavily-polluted industrial world.

Beacon Port is hard to explain...because I'm having trouble translating the source text from Japanese.

Synobazz is a world of giant marshes.

Ancient Mare ("Ancient Mesa" in the 2001 localization) is a frigid world.

Crater Land is a mining colony world.

Fire Field (which appeared in the SNES game too) is a former mining world that became plunged into magmatic eruptions from miners digging too deep.

I'm thinking maybe...

Bianca City = Corneria

Stark Farm = Katina

Laputan Colony = Titania

Cloud Carpet = Aquas

East Ten Side = Zoness

Beacon Port = Venom

Synobazz = Fortuna

Ancient Mare = Fichina

Crater Land = Papetoon

Fire Field = Macbeth

But what do you think?  Should I swap Katina and Papetoon?

No, I think they're fine how they are :D.

I made the hack! :D It didn't take long...but I ended up swapping Fortuna and Venom.

YEAH!

And now that we are on it, I wonder

what happened to the Mute City...

I loved it's SNES track... :|

In the story of Maximum Velocity, Mute City still exists, but it has lost nearly all of its importance.  Bianca City was founded on newly discovered natural resources, and it went from nothing to exploding in size into an all-important megalopolis within a generation.

Okay, and when/where the game tells a story or like that?

The intro or the manual? You know,

because in the SNES version I did not see

any story, sadly (at the end there was the

'Captain Falcon and F-Zero crew congratulate

you' or like that, but nothing else) :|.

Isn't Mute City supposed to be the 26th century version of New York City? *shrugs*

Anyway, Dermot, think you can email me that hack? I might enjoy the game a little more if it was totally dissacoiated with F-Zero :P
