Going blind (literally)

Dermot

Recommended Posts

Over the past few years, I've been very rapidly losing my eyesight.  Apparently it's congenital - it happened to my dad too, until sometime in his 40s.  So we've gotten me an eye exam (where we learned my prescription doubled in that time - 20/400 to 20/800 - with the addition of new progressed astigmatism).  I actually mentioned this before on the Good News thread, because it meant I could get new glasses.

But we're not really sure when I'm going to be able to get new glasses - two weeks, a month, two months?  For now, I'm legally blind even with the glasses I currently have.  It was manageable until today, but now it's becoming very painful to focus.  But, I mean, it's not like I can stop using my eyes - they tend to kinda be important in someone's daily life.

My eyes are so sore right now...  *rubs them*  At least, for now, I can still see my computer screen, if it's close enough to my face. :)

Has anyone else here ever been through a particularly difficult transition before obtaining a new pair of glasses?

Man that sounds horrible.

Only until I obtain a new pair of glasses. :3

Though it can at times be difficult in circumstances where you can't wear glasses anyway, such as when you're swimming or washing up.

Jeez...  That REALLY must suck, Dermot.  I hope things get better, but I don't think it will in your case.  I'll have you in my prayers.

I've had a teacher wth 20/600 vision, she was a substitute for my Prob. and Stat. teacher, and she said that even wearing glasses she still can't see well.

I, myself, have a small case of astigmatism, but it's not really that bad.  I've had to get a different pair of glasses every year or three years, but it's nothing major in my case.  I ACTUALLY caused myself to get it.  Let's just say that the tv's screen wasn't interesting enough and so I stared at the red, blue and white lines in the tv.  I'd say I have, maybe, 20/40 or 20/60 vision --I'm not putting my finger on anything about my vision though.  I really don't know it.

I can only say that everything looks very fuzzy without my glasses on until someone, or something, is about ten or twelve feet in front of me.  Other than that, it's just fuzzy.  I can spot things moving so well that my brothers, and parents, say I have an eagle's eye for things.  To make it even more ironic, my brother told me that I should sign up to be a sniperman in the Army since I can spot things so well.  Or a spotter for a sniper.

my vision isn't that bad being nearsighted  ,but I can't read things on a chalk board without being almost right next to it without my glasses anyway otherwise I can see pretty well ,but with both parent's wearin contacts or glasses i don't see it gettting better any time soon despite having 20/20 vision back in like 2nd grade

I hope you get your new glasses soon,

and do need any other (sure you like getting

new glasses, but that means your vision

is weakenning).

I have a problem with my left eye being

'lazy' and my right eye 'putting too much effort',

thus I need to wear glasses to 'balance' them.

And this is MY fault. When I was a little kid I got

too close to the TV...

All I can do, unfortunately, is hope that you

do not need 'newer' glasses after these ones.

(In other words, that your current visual range

remains stable).

I definitely know how that feels, having terrible vision. I'm pretty much helpless without my glasses. When I lose them, I can't see well enough to find them, and I have to have help. :P If I get caught driving without them I could get in trouble, and it's not like I would want to anyways, I mean sure, I can see shapes well enough, but I can't read signs or see if something small darts out in front of me. I don't know my vision exactly, but it's pretty bad.

I'm glad I could make this thread broad enough to bring the community together with our common experiences of vision correction. ^_^

And yes, Sissi, that's happened to me too. If I accidentally drop my glasses on the floor and they bounce in a random way, it can sometimes be an adventure finding them again.  I've only needed someone else's help finding them a few times though (I usually found them myself with enough tactile searching).

Honestly, I know everything will be fine.  The most annoying part is the time before I get new glasses when I don't have adequate glasses. All that extra squinting and focusing makes your eyes all the more sore...

Sorry to hear that, bub.

I'm legally blind, I wear contacts to see.  Glaucoma is genetic in my family (thanks a lot, dad!), but at last I can have Rx Cannibis! :D

My only experience with glasses was a con. I don't trust optitions and dentists as a result.

Off topic, but why do glasses still exist? By that I mean surely we can make lenses small enough to be applied to the eye directly?

Not everyone is cut out to wear contacts, for some people glasses are more practical.  I've wore contacts before and my vision was slightly worse as opposed to wearing glasses.  My optometrist doesn't recommend contacts for all his patients, same with laser eye surgery.

there are also small rare incidents with contacts. and some people just can't stand the idea of having stuff in their eyes like contacts.

I tried them for a couple of days at work and they irritated my eyes.  Also, they hurt even more after over 9000 attempts to get them in during the same day :)

Additionally, not everyone can get or like them.

In my country there is no 'eye laser surgery';

and contacts are annoying as heck. A classmate

used them for a week, you just had to see her

trying to insert them in the right place... O_o

I'll burn my eyes from my skull before I go back to glasses.

I'd rather have a buffalo take a diarrhea dump in my ear than wear [prescription] eye glasses again.

Your character's wearing shades.  They are technically a kind of glasses. :P You know shades can be made to eye prescription, right?
