"User"
I've been to Portland, Oregon a couple of times - beautiful place to live, things are cheap and NO sales tax! WHAAAT!? You guys have NO STATE INCOME TAX, a $33 flat fee for auto registration, and at least you guys don't have a 9.75% sales tax, unlike Commie-fornia. Stupid liberals. Keep in mind though that taxes provide services, like road maintenance and upkeep, plowing roads when it snows (up where I've from) and other services throughout the city and state. I've been to more then half of the American states and I can tell you that states with usually low taxes overall (alcohol, tobacco etc) or other regulation type fees overall generally have crappier services provided by the city/state. In Ontario we have a 13% tax on most goods and services, but what does it net us? Free health care (I can see a doctor within a few days at most for free), high quality roads that are maintained A LOT, punctual city services, excellent subsidized public transit, etc.

But we have NONE OF THAT in Cali. Our social services and infrastructure are shoddy, or almost gone. We paid all that money in taxes, with nothing to show for it because these assholes in our state government pocketed the tax money. We have the worst roads, schools, civic/social services, police force, and more in the whole nation. We have no health care, Ontario and Cali are 2 different worlds. LoneWolf
I do know the cost of living in Seattle is pretty up there. It's cheaper in Seattle then in the San Juans. Also, the tax is pretty low, Washington is good about that.I've been to Portland, Oregon a couple of times - beautiful place to live, things are cheap and NO sales tax! You should visit before you move here, just to see if you like it.But we have NONE OF THAT in Cali. Our social services and infrastructure are shoddy, or almost gone. Mr. Krystal
I mean elitist as in rude to visitors. Some states are pretty friendly to visitors, even if they have unwarranted self importance about their own state. What I've heard from my friend whose been to Washington is they treat you like some sort of alien there. But hey, one person's experience.No. They aren't like that. They weren't like that to me anyway. As someone who has lived in Texas my whole life, I can confirm that a good chunk of Texans ARE elitist. Texas has a lot to be proud of. I wish to live there eventually for a host of reasons. There is a lot I love about Texas, but I hate the politics down here. There is also a lot of bible-thumping "holier-than-thou" attitude that goes on here. At least I live near Austin, where people are closer to normal (but they call themselves "weird"). It's also too damn hot.I completely despise Rick Perry. Sadly, last election, the vote was split so bad that Perry won, despite 60% of the state voting against him...10. Discussion of politics and religion are not allowed. That includes posts that are nationalistic in nature. Do not post religious or political symbols that may be offensive to others. Also, do not promote a political party, candidate, or organization. No exceptions, including signatures and avatars.DZ.......

Guest Julius Quasar
Anyway, this thread is becoming more and more pub-worthy. If the political talk continues, it gets moved.Okay, my bad. Mainly, I'm concerned about the cost of living here in Cali, and I heard that by comparison, it's cheaper in WA. Also, we're severely overcrowded here in SoCal, it feels like Shanghai, or Hong Kong.Nah, North Carolina probably beats CA as far as shitty schooling goes. 48th in reading, yaaaaaay!Well, public schools anyway. Our colleges are pretty cool (Duke ftw).Ooh, I dunno about that....recently we ranked as 49th in overall achievement scores...reading, writing, and recess, oops, wait...I mean 'rithmetic. But I agree that NC Colleges are great, and Duke University is awesome. Robert Monroe
I'm aspiring to go to Duke one day for my MD... but you need a flipping 3.8 GPA or better to even have a ghost of a chance *psyduck*

D:Anyways, I would like to see how it's like to live up in Seattle, WA. I met folks from that state who were as nice as could be. I might have to pretend I'm not from Cali, though, as I heard some Cali folk already moved up there, and did not endear themselves to the locals up there, driving up prices, etc. (Sorry Washington State). TheRedFox8
I hope you like Washington, though. Once you get past the heat and ugliness, it's a pretty nice place to live.
Mr. Fox13
I say go for it. Its good to move around some. I know I'm leaving Texas as soon as I get the proper funds, and heading up to Alaska. The scenery is sooo much better there. Not to mention the fact that its nice and cool. The heat here is just brutal. x.x
